NSSF national shooting sports month

The excitement of having your shot break a flying clay target or knock over a steel plate (clang!) and then sharing the fun of that experience awaits all who participate in National Shooting Sports Month® this August.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation® (NSSF®) established this celebration to encourage you to spend time at your local shooting range and share your passion for the shooting sports with others. Millions of Americans have a great interest in learning about recreational shooting, making National Shooting Sports Month the perfect time to bring someone new to the range — and we have 10 great ways to help you join in the celebration. If you think of others, please share them on social media and use the hashtag #LetsGoShootingTM.

  1. Bring Someone New

There’s nothing quite like seeing the joy on someone’s face after they’ve taken their first shots. NSSF’s +ONESMMovement encourages experienced shooters to invite a newcomer to the range. Have your friends new to firearms watch this video on range safety and etiquette before they go.

  2. Try Something New

Are you a handgun shooter only? Then pick up a shotgun and give sporting clays a try. Are you primarily a shotgun shooter? Then hone your handgun skills or sign up for a local International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) match. Learn about different target sports and see instructional videos at LetsGoShooting.org.

  3. Rediscover Shooting

Haven’t shot in a while? Dust off your shooting gear and head to the range — and bring a friend along. Learn a new game, like action pistol, 3-Gun or skeet shooting.

  4. Find a National Shooting Sports Month Event Near You

At LetsGoShooting.org, you’ll find all the events ranges and retailers across the country have scheduled to celebrate the shooting sports during August. If none are listed in your area, use the website to locate a range near you to enjoy a fun are, safe day of target shooting.

  5. Make it a Date

Ask your spouse, partner, boyfriend or girlfriend to go shooting. You’ll have a great time together. Send an email invitation to them at LetsGoShooting.org. (By the way, women are the fastest growing segment in target shooting, and more gear than ever is being designed for their fit and comfort, so don’t hesitate for a moment to ask the favorite woman in your life to join you on the range.)

  6. Cash in on Deals

Retailers and ranges are offering all kinds of specials during National Shooting Sports Month at some 2,000 events nationwide. Find a participating business near you to take advantage of these offers at LetsGoShooting.org.

  7. Practice Firearm Safety

Responsible gun owners safely handle their firearms and securely store them when not in use when transporting them in vehicles and at home. August is the perfect time to spread the word to your friends, family and community that the shooting sports are some of the safest recreational activities around, and that they can be enjoyed by everyone.

  8. Celebrate Freedom and Tradition

In addition to passing on the great tradition of target shooting, you can educate others about the unique American freedoms that make participating possible. See NSSF’s Proud to be a Firearms Owner pocket card.

  9. Share it!

#LetsGoShooting and #PlusOneMovement are the themes of National Shooting Sports Month. Share the hashtags and your experiences on your favorite social media networks and remind others to give target shooting a try. Stay connected by following LetsGoShooting and #PlusOneMovement on FacebookInstagram and Twitter.

  1. Inherited a Remington 700 .30-06/scope from father-in-law a few years ago after he passed.
Took the rifle to the range, zeroed in 14 rounds, said thanks to Ray.
    Does that count?

  2. Take new shooter to the range is the most important. Question. Why did it have to be August? Heat index here has been 110-115. Couldn’t it have been early spring or fall?

  3. A large part of the country is way too hot. Range time either has to wait for summer to end or somebody to give me a pile of cash for indoor air conditioned shooting ranges.

    • enuf, I get it. We want those new shooters to be as comfortable and have as much fun as possible. Sweating and swating bugs ain’t it.

      • Well, it’s like this. If you can handle the heat then go for it. I used to able but somewhere’s around becoming an getting older person my tolerance for the heat became less.

    • Thanks now I’m sure we’re about to witness a great global warning/climate change debate. I’ll go ahead and get it started: Its bullshit. The science doesn’t back it up. The sun is making the earth warm up.

      • Like you said, you started it. And everything you just said is bullshit, especially the bullshit part. That was the bullshitiest, scientifically speaking.

        • Nonsense. The sun warms the earth does it not? Then where else is the new warmth coming from? Warmth only comes from the sun.

      • Hank, got to agree with you. 60, 000,000 years ago there were no polar ice caps. Our Great Plains were warm inland seas because all the water on the planet was wet. There were no fossil fuels because, well, there weren’t any fossils yet. So why was the planet so warm then? Dinosaur farts? Species have risen and fell for epochs. It’s just our turn on top now. Next it may be the cockroaches. Why worry about it?

        • For those wanting to get an understanding of the man made global warming hoax. Read State of Fear by Michael Crichton. As for global warming as a science. The problem with the global warming nuts. Is they believe the planet should always maintain a stable climate. Unfortunately that has never been/will ever be the case. The planet is an ever evolving biosphere. Just like whining about animal species going extinct. 90% of all the species that have inhabited the planet are now extinct. This planet will be here long after the human species has gone extinct. Just like the dinosaurs. The arrogance is believing that humans can effect the planet enough to change it’s patterns. As an example when Mount St.Helens erupted in 1980. It spewed more carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide into the atmosphere. Than had been put in the atmosphere by humans since the beginning of the industrial age. Yet that event did not destroy the atmosphere or the climate. As with all things. The answers involve power, control and money. The indoctrinated sheep are just the tool. Keep your powder Dry.

      • Paying $20/hour is very expensive for most of us who are retired on Social Security.
Add to that, one hour of range time isn’t enough time for many who need to practice.

        • I’m retired and not rich by any means. Once a month at the indoor range for an hour.Allows me to work thru 2 firearms and 100+ rounds. Although most of my time 1 to 2 times per month is spent on the DNR range out doors. Such is the life of a gunaholic. 1 is to many and 100 is not enough. Same goes for practice. Never have enough time to shoot as much as I want.

      • About the same around here, though many are more expensive. Our outdoor club is about $25 a year. The fancy outdoor club is $150 a year, but they have a lot of different ranges and an indoor 24/7 club house with indoor pistol and small bore ranges. If you have a hunting license you can use the DCNR ranges without an extra fee.

  4. My aunt is not comfortable with her “EDC”, so I will try to help her. Honestly if I can just get her to understand the fundamentals and keep a solid group, I will feel like it was a success. Pretty rough… Even rougher trying to have a conversation with her husband about keeping more than 3 rounds in a mag and carrying one in the chamber. He is so worried about the spring and calls it a clip. Pretty much every conversation with him about anything especially politics is a losing battle, but I hope to at least get the full mag idea in his head. He doesn’t even EDC it… it’s a home gun. My aunt though…. her “purse EDC” had 3 rounds in it and I about lost my shit…
