    • Believe it or not, an air rifle was a PRIMARY arm on the Lewis & Clark expedition; did’t have to worry about wet powder, etc. (Also had conventional). Saw it at the Virginia Military Institute Firearms Museum. Amazing.

      • The Lewis & Clark Girandoni air rifle (there was only one on the L&C Corps of Discovery) was, in my estimation, the single most important gun in all of American history.

It was used at every stop where the expedition met natives to impress the natives with the ability to shoot 20+ times with a gun powerful enough to kill a deer (which translates to “powerful enough to kill a man”) without loading ball or powder.

Lewis used it as a great showpiece, and kept the question of “how many of these rifles do you have?” unanswered. L&C would never answer the questions of “what is in the longboat?” or other questions as to how well the expedition was equipped. All the other firearms on the L&C expedition were black powder pieces – rifles, shotguns, even small cannons, but the Girandoni was THE showpiece for impressing people with the notion that the expedition had vastly superior firepower.

Consider what might have happened without the Girandoni – perhaps the party of 36 to 38 men (and one woman) might have been overwhelmed by a force of hundreds of natives. If that had happened, consider what might have happened if the expedition’s black powder weapons, powder, ball and shot had fallen into one tribe’s hands? The balance of power in the plains might have radically changed, with one tribe using the captured weapons to slaughter their enemies. If L&C had not made it back, the Congress might have changed their minds about how the newly acquired territory was to be dealt with, etc.

I maintain (and you needn’t believe me – you can read the journals of the Corps of Discovery – there’s over a dozen volumes, and about a million words, in which the Girandoni is mentioned over three dozen times) the Girandoni is the single most important gun in American history because it enabled Lewis and Clark to make it all the way to the west coast and back, without getting into savage fights with the native tribes along the way, mostly because their showmanship, sleight of hand and artful mis-direction enabled them to present themselves as being overwhelmingly well armed, such that the natives thought it unwise to risk large numbers of men against 36 to 38 people.

    • They were widely available couple years ago. Then Umarex bought the producing company and stopped selling them.

That would make an outstanding landing light system…

      • Whoa…

If that bulb can handle the vibration in that environ, they should seriously consider developing a landing light.

$3,000 is pricey, but doable for that market…

        • I suppose I could ziptie one to my model cessna 182, its 2 stroke nitro motor produces plenty of vibration. be interesting to see if vibration would kill the bulb or the surface mount electronics first….
