First of all, I'm hoping that you are "the" Shelley Lubben, and not someone claiming to be her. If you are who your login name claims, let me first say that I have an enormous amount of respect for you and the work you're doing, and I mean no disrespect for disagreeing with you over the claim that strict gun control results in lower rates of violence in Europe. (And if you're not really Shelley Lubben, we'd appreciate it if you would not make comments using her name – she strikes me as someone perfectly capable of expressing her own opinions on her own, without your help.) Having said that…
Here at TTAG, we do a lot of investigation, reading, research (and frankly debunking) of claims on BOTH sides regarding guns and gun violence. This site was founded on the idea that we would do our best to tell the truth about guns, no matter what. I like to think we're doing a pretty good job, as we've gotten flack from both sides on our reporting.
Here's the thing, though. When you start investigating claims made by anybody in this debate, you quickly discover that "figures don't lie, but liars figure," and when someone has an agenda, statistics mysteriously surface that supports their position. In other words, don't believe everything you hear. From anybody.
We try to get to the sources of data, to eliminate distortions caused by reportage and the peddling of agendas. (In Biblical terms, think of this as us going back to the original Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic texts for the answers, instead of relying upon the King James Version.) What we've discovered is that a lot of the reporting we hear from the press has effectively twisted data around to support certain claims – and soft-pedals any data that would refute these claims.
For instance, many of the anti-gun studies ignore the fact that gun violence was lower in European countries before their gun ban legislation was enacted, than after. It also ignores the fact that overall violence rates per capita were lower in Europe than in America. Data shows that violence (both with and without guns) is not only up in Europe (when compared to the U.S.) over the last couple of decades, but it has risen faster than it has in the USA. These facts refute the claim that strict gun control is responsible for reducing violent crime. But you won't hear that from the Brady Campaign, the Huffington Post, or any other anti-gun rights, pro-gun-control organization, nor will you hear about it from the mainstream media. It doesn't fit into their worldview.
If you would care to cite the sources for the claim you've reprinted here, we'd be happy to examine and reprint the source data for the conclusions, and see how this stacks up to what we've learned about the facts behind guns and violence. We want to expose all the data to the cold, hard light of day, no matter what the truth really is.
