Governor Pat Quinn put out the above re-election campaign ad. It’s yet more proof that Quinn’s political instincts have gone south. He’s playing the Newtown spree killing “ban assault weapons” card almost two years after the fact, in a country where voters have about as much memory for political debates as a goldfish. In a state where concealed carry has finally been approved. In fact, gun control is so not a factor in the race that the virulently, incessantly, remorselessly anti-gun Chicago Tribune has just come out in favor of Quinn’s opponent, businessman Bruce Rauner. In their official endorsement, the Trib’s Editorial Board never once mentions gun control. “He would challenge the power brokers who like Illinois just as it is. No wonder they loathe Rauner. He makes them sweat.” Hopefully, the same can be said for The Land of Lincoln’s anti-gunners. [h/t DrVino]

  1. Well, at least he didn’t make fun of his opponent’s wheelchair, like another Democrat gubernatorial candidate just did, so he only gets second place for being out of touch.

    • Maybe, maybe not. He’s pissed off a lot of people all over the state. Given that turnout is likely to be low, Rauner has a decent shot.

    • Rauner is going to win. He has twice as many commercials on TV and RINOs frequently do well in states like Illinois. The only political things that he has done before this election was donate to various democrats.

  2. Yep this has been out for a few days. I wish I had a machine gun that fired 350 rounds in (30 seconds?) or less. Rauner is pretty vague on guns and everything else. And buddies with Rahm the tiny dancer. As well as having a democrat wife. No matter he’s still better than Quinn-the Worst governor in America TM

    • I think he stole that line from California State Senator “Ghost Gun” DeLeon. I had to laugh, the claim is so ludicrous. Nor have I seen any statistics suggesting that ARs or AKs are the weapons of choice in the gang wars or armed robberies.

    • The Uzi has a rate of fire of 950 rounds per minute.

Works out to 475 rounds in 30 seconds. I bet that 475 round magazine is a real bitch to lug around, tho.

      • Yeah, but an Uzi is a pistol-caliber submachine gun, not a “military-style assault rifle” (ie. a scary-looking semi- auto). Just another Dem rattling off insanely ludicrous crap about guns.

  3. Everyone is building ships and boats, some are making monuments, some are jotting down notes. Everyone is in despair, every girl and boy, when the Quinn the Eskimo gets here everyone will jump for joy.

  4. It pains me greatly to choose who I vote for based on the fact I don’t want the other guy to win. Quinn is terrible but there are many unanswered questions with Rauner to have much confidence in him. Voting for a write in or 3rd party takes votes away for the lesser of 2 evils, one of whom is going to win.

Can’t wait to get out of here.

    • Anybody is better than a career #chiraq backed politician. If you don’t like the candidates, put in some effort in the primaries. It’s how the RINOS are getting run out of the GOP.

  5. Pet Peeve: He said high capacity “clip”. ITS CALLED A MAGAZINE, PEOPLE!!! Or at least “Mag”!

    • You know I was reading For Whom the Bell Tolls last night and Hemmingway used clip repeatedly.

      I give him a pass though. 🙂

      • During his day, magazines were not all that common. Most weapons were still loaded from stripper clips.

        • I considered that. He was describing the magazine for his German subgun as a clip.

I wonder though. What German made 9mm machine gun existed in the 1930s?

        • Yep. WW2-ish era, box magazines were pretty much only found on SMGs. Just for fun, imagine how many stripper clips a soldier would need to carry to reload a fixed-magazine SMG 🙂 But yeah, the earliest detachable-mag widespread rifle (or Carbine) was probably M1 Carbine, around 1942.

        • One instance. What gun is he describing?

Robert Jordan lay on the pine-needle floor of the forest and listened to the first stirring in the branches of the pines of the wind that would come with daylight. He took the clip out of the submachine gun and worked the lock back and forth. Then he turned the gun, with the lock open and in the dark he put the muzzle to his lips and blew through the barrel, the metal tasting greasy and oily as his tongue touched the edge of the bore. He laid the gun across his forearm, the action up so that no pine needles or rubbish could get in it, and shucked all the cartridges out of the clip with his thumb and onto a handkerchief he had spread in front of him. Then, feeling each cartridge in the dark and turning it in his fingers, he pressed and slid them one at a time back into the clip. Now the clip was heavy again in his hand and he slid it back into the submachine gun and felt it click home. He lay on his belly behind the pine trunk, the gun across his left forearm and watched the point of light below him. Sometimes he could not see it and then he knew that the man in the sentry box had moved in front of the brazier. Robert Jordan lay there and waited for daylight.

          Masterpiece

        • John, your fast man. Ive got my Small Arms of the World open to Germany. I see the MP18. There are a number of passages where he describes assembling the gun from pieces, carrying it and firing it.

Pre WWII the options are limited. He does specifically describe it as German. The book was published in 1940

  6. Could someone bring me up to speed on Illinois politics? Exactly how long does the Governor there have to be in office before his federal indictment, trial and incarceration?

Also, getting your firearms information from Salon is like getting recipes from Guns and Ammo, except of course that at least the folks over at Guns and Ammo have the wherewithal to know that they know jack about cooking and therefor don’t print recipes.

  7. Im from illinois and Rauner is no savior. He is a rino/ jew confidant of The dirty scum Rahm Emanuel. I suppose he is better than Quinn but that isn’t saying much. Another lesser of two evils vote. Its sickening.

    • Ok…

      1. What is it with you and Jews… Did a menorah fall on your puppy when you were a kid?
      2. If he’s in Emanuel’s pocket, why is he fighting to hard to keep Quin in office?

      • The tiny dancer is NOT fighting for Quinn. He is MIA for the brainless one. And Gov. Quinn has his own scandal brewing with an anti-violence slush fund being investigated. Rauner is a loose cannon. And Gov. William-Illinois is broken and unfixable. 100 billion in debt.

  8. Quinn won exactly three counties out of Illinois’ 100+ for his current term. Mathematically he only needs one to remain in office: Chicago’s Cook County . The poplation of people in northeast IL outnumbers the rest of the state, which means he has effectively already won the election.

    • Which is sad. I know the guy personally that should have won. He would have made a much better governor than Potato Head.

    • It all hinges on voter turnout – that is, which party’s voters are more motivated to go to the polls.

Quinn’s last victory was incredibly close, and two Republicans won state-wide offices four years ago. Illinois is a blue state, but not as blue as some people think.

Latest polls show this race too close to call.

      • The problem is that the average southern democrat is more conservative than most Illinois republican candidates. Rauner vs Quinn is almost as shitty a choice as Blagojevich vs Judy Baar Topinka was.

    • Should divide the state and make 51 states. There could be Illinois… and Chicago. The people of Illinois shouldn’t be blanketed with Chicago’s mindless nonsensical legislation’s and force fed their crap when completely unwanted. But… I guess that is what we call “Democracy.” Because 51% is just more important. More important than things like logic, reason, philosophy, rights, or freedom.

  9. Who ends up as Governor of Illinois is totally irrelevant. To anyone but those who just happen to live in that state. I do feel bad for the good folks of the state that are stuck there.
The fact that they are still using lies in the ads is relevant..
I wish I could own a semi auto that fired 700 rounds a minute.
It may be partially true about an actual assault weapon having a high rate of fire.
But since we cant buy one, and an AR15 isn’t an assault rifle.
I just wish for once someone would just use the proper nomenclature when talking guns.
Just another 30 seconds of BS,

  10. Breaking news from Chicago! The 45caliber “assault rifle” used in shooting up the subway in Chicago the other day is identified as a Hi-Point. As I reported. With a 9 round “clip”. Good thing homie didn’t have a 350round clip with the shoulder thingy that goes up :-). And this BS is par for the course in Illinois…yeah Quinn will probably win…sigh.

  11. In Illinois one party rule is a cancer. We need to start treatment to save what’s healthy if it’s not too late. Rainer wasn’t my choice in the primary but he’s the only choice now. The Libertarian candidate may get just enough votes to screw it up.
