A third party will investigate events at Oxford High School that occurred before a school shooting that left four students dead and six other students and a teacher wounded, the Michigan district’s superintendent said.
Oxford Community Schools Superintendent Tim Throne said in a statement that he called for the outside investigation because parents have asked questions about “the school’s version of events leading up to the shooting.” He also elaborated on interactions with the student leading up to the shooting.
“It’s critically important to the victims, our staff and our entire community that a full and transparent accounting be made,” Throne said.
His comments came after a news conference Friday by Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald that detailed numerous warning signs from the student charged in the shooting: His search for gun ammunition on a cellphone, and a drawing that showed a bullet with the words “blood everywhere” above a person who appears to have been shot along with “my life is useless” and “the world is dead.”
“Of course, he shouldn’t have gone back to that classroom. … I believe that is a universal position. I’m not going to chastise or attack, but yeah,” McDonald said. Asked if school officials may potentially be charged, she said: “The investigation’s ongoing.”
On Tuesday at the school, roughly 30 miles (50 kilometers) north of Detroit, the student was sent back to the classroom after a school meeting with his parents. Three hours later the shooting occurred.
“The school should have been responsible to relay that to the sheriff’s office. It looks like this could have been prevented,” Robert Jordan, founder and director of St. Louis-based Protecting Our Students, said Friday. “People died because of those mistakes.”
In addition to Jordan, parents of students slain in a 2018 school shooting in Florida say police should have been alerted before Tuesday’s rampage.
The suspect in the Oxford High shooting, Ethan Crumbley, 15, is now charged as an adult with murder, terrorism and other crimes.
On Friday, prosecutors charged his parents, James and Jennifer Crumbley, with four counts each of involuntary manslaughter. They pleaded not guilty on Saturday and a judge imposed a combined $1 million bond.
The 9mm semi-automatic pistol used in the shooting was bought at a local gun shop on Black Friday by James Crumbley as an early Christmas present for his son, authorities said.
School officials became concerned about the younger Crumbley on Monday, a day before the shooting, when a teacher saw him searching for ammunition on his phone, McDonald told reporters.
On Tuesday, a teacher found a note on Ethan’s desk and took a photo. It was a drawing of a gun pointing at the words, “The thoughts won’t stop. Help me,” McDonald said.
There also was a drawing of a bullet, she said, with words above it: “Blood everywhere.” Between the gun and the bullet was a person who appeared to have been shot twice and is bleeding, she said. “My life is useless” and “The world is dead” also were written.
Ethan Crumbley and both his parents met with school officials at 10 a.m. Tuesday. His parents left, and Ethan went back to his classes with his backpack, where investigators believe he stashed the gun. Authorities were not notified, something that county Sheriff Michael Bouchard said he wishes would have been done.
By 1 p.m. Tuesday, the school erupted in gunshots, chaos and bloodshed.
“The school had the responsibility to be doing an immediate threat assessment on the student and bringing into that conversation the sworn police officer and law enforcement,” said Lori Alhadeff, whose 14-year-old daughter, Alyssa, was one of 17 students slain in 2018 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High in Parkland, Florida.
About five weeks before the Stoneman Douglas shooting, an FBI tip line received a call saying former student Nikolas Cruz had bought guns and planned to “slip into a school and start shooting the place up.”
That information was never forwarded to the FBI. Cruz, who had been expelled from the school a year earlier and had a long history of emotional and behavioral problems, never was contacted.
Now 23, Cruz pleaded guilty in October to 17 counts of first-degree murder.
“We have to take these threats seriously,” Alhadeff said.
But looking at such an issue after the fact raises other questions, said Christopher Smith, professor of Law and Public Policy at Michigan State University and chair of the Michigan Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence.
You have to consider whether the “teacher and school officials specifically have in their training that you need to report all these things,” Smith said.
In a video message to the community Thursday night, Throne acknowledged the meeting of Crumbley, the parents and school officials. Throne offered no details but said that “no discipline was warranted.”
In his statement Saturday, Throne elaborated on the events of Tuesday morning, saying the student was taken to the guidance counselor’s office where he claimed the drawing was part of a video game he was designing and that he planned to pursue video game design as a career. He worked on homework while waiting for his parents as counselors watched him.
“At no time did counselors believe the student might harm others based on his behavior, responses and demeanor, which appeared calm,” Throne said.
“While both of his parents were present, counselors asked specific probing questions regarding the potential for self-harm or harm to others,” Throne said, adding counseling was recommended for him, and his parents were notified that they had 48 hours to seek it. “When the parents were asked to take their son home for the day, they flatly refused and left without their son, apparently to return to work.”
He said that the student had no prior disciplinary infractions so he was allowed to return to the classroom instead of being “sent home to an empty house.”
I was concerned that the charges against the parents was another political / anti-gun attack. I reserved judgement, not knowing enough facts. If what has been said in this article is true, it appears that the parents are responsible and criminally negligent.
I look at this from the perspective of school staff before that spree-killer started attacking people:
That spree-killer using his phone during class to search for ammunition was basically irrelevant. (Anyone might be searching for ammunition for lawful recreational target shooting and hunting purposes.)
That spree-killer’s drawing and words–that was a GIANT red flag which clearly
indicatedSCREAMED that the spree-killer was in a very dark place, should be immediately removed from school, and immediately on the radar of school staff, school resource officer, and local law enforcement.And that spree-killers drawing and words were entirely sufficient all by itself to warrant all of the actions above. His demeanor and answers to questions during the conference were/are irrelevant.
I hold the spree-killer’s parents and school staff equally responsible for that nightmare.
And before anyone chimes-in that the spree-killer alone is responsible:
Sure, the spree-killer knows better than to murder people. That alone means he has significant culpability. At the same time, he was 15 years-old and not in any way, shape, nor form equipped to realize how dark his thoughts were and that there are resources to help. That reduces his culpability ever-so-slightly.
The school shares culpability. The teacher who saw the drawing immediately recognized that something really bad was brewing–and the evidence of that is obvious in the fact that his teacher immediately acted upon that drawing to intervene with responsible staff at the school. Furthermore, responsible staff at the school knew there was a giant problem brewing because they kept the student there and called his parents in. And yet responsible school staff basically said, “Oh, thank you Mr. Student for clarifying that your drawing was just part of a video game design–all is well! Now go back to class.”
Of course the parents also share culpability for totally blowing off everything.

I do believe that society should have immediately deemed him “at risk” which required the following to happen immediately:
— removal from school
— intensive Psychological evaluation
— 24/7 guardian until Psych. evaluation

I think prosecuting the parents was the right call. I believe parents should be responsible for heinous acts committed by their children. I’m also aware how teens can use this against their parents.
But they are charging this boy as an adult. That should end charges against the parents. If they want to charge the parents then charge the boy as a minor.

I tend to have to agree with your position.
For the record I believe the student is much less culpable than would normally be the case given his age and the fact that he sure seemed to be asking for help–either directly or indirectly (depending on how you look at it) via the picture and captions that he seemed to purposely leave exposed for a teacher to find.
“asking for help” is all fuzzy and sweet and nice and stuff… but that does not change the kid’s total responsibility for HIS actions. His folks SHOULD have had a far more accurate view of their Darlin’Baby Boy’s boiling pot inside his head,and never gotten that handgun for him.. or at least, made certain it was always kept secured until dad could go out wiht him.
I’ve known six year olds to be mature enough to safely and ethically handle firearms. This kid at 14 was nowhere near ready to have thepower to instantly kill ready to hand. For that I have to fault his parents. Let’s hope thejuries involved here can see through the smoke and mirrors, and assess the real part the adults in the home had in this.
This sort of scenario stems from the “disciline” methods in commonn use in our schools. Schoolstaaff are so afreaid of huring anyone”s tender and sensitive FEEEEEELINGS they fear to make any decisive moves when they should. And the system NEVER tteaches the kids HOW to respove conflicts and disagreements. “Time out” does nothing. It only gives them time to sit there and seethe and to plot revenge. Disgusing as it seems, I really think a return to the pile-on thrashings after school when someone steps out of line in their conduct is a better route. Forgiveness and repentance are unknown in this context of relatioinships at schools.

In Michigan a teacher can suspend a student from attending class, a principal can also.
Although the kid pulled the trigger the school shares blame because they basically enabled him instead of stopping him by removing him and getting help when they should have. He even wrote on his drawings “The thoughts won’t stop, help me. My life in useless. The world is dead.” and left it out for a teacher to find. Other students were worried, teachers were worried, the principal was worried, heck, even other parents were worried that something bad was going to happen even if they did not know it was this kid or what was going to happen exactly and they kept their kids home that day, the kid was leaving notes for teachers to find begging for help, he was blasting it all over his twitter page – yet no one picked up a phone and made a simple phone call.
No one helped this kid when they should have. He was even asking for help. But gotta follow procedures and the procedures the school followed procedures for a disciplinary problem like they would if the kid acted out by cursing at a teacher. In all this no one helped the kid before he went off despite knowing or thinking he needed help and having access to the very things that could have helped him, and by not helping him they in effect helped enable him.
Although Michigan does not specifically have red flag laws (or didn’t), in Michigan anyone who has reasonable grounds to believe – a person intends to or will harm themselves or others or expresses serious ideation of such – can contact the police who will hold them in “protective custody” (not arrest – there is no record of arrest for this) and take them to be evaluated by mental health professionals.
Under Michigan MENTAL HEALTH CODE, Section 330.1427; section 427: “If a peace officer observes an individual conducting himself or herself in a manner that causes the peace officer to reasonably believe that the individual is a person requiring treatment, the peace officer may take the individual into protective custody and transport the individual to a preadmission screening unit designated by a community mental health services program for examination under section 429 or for mental health intervention services.”
Its my view that the pictures drawn would have caused at least some concern for a “peace officer” to “reasonably believe that the individual is a person requiring treatment.”
In Michigan If a pupil exhibits a pattern of behavior that poses a substantial risk of creating an emergency situation, the school is suppose to enact an intervention plan that includes positive behavioral intervention and support, and for the care, safety, welfare, and security of the school community they may remove the student from the school (depending on the situation). Its a little vague from there, but various references make note of then getting the pupil evaluated by medical and mental health professionals but I can’t find how that happens.
They could have stopped this from happening with a simple phone call or even maybe by enacting the plan they should have enacted. This kid could have started getting help, or at least had a chance of getting help, with a phone call by the teacher or principal.

I know of an instance first-hand where “authorities” exercised Michigan’s mental health code. A person who was distraught posted something that could definitely seem suicidal on social media. A concerned reader notified the county Sheriff who agreed that the distraught poster could be suicidal. Within a few hours, the county Sheriff sent two deputies and an ambulance to the distraught person’s location. The deputies found the distraught person and gave him/her a friendly ultimatum: voluntarily hop into the ambulance and go to a local hospital for a Psych. evaluation. Or refuse and have the deputies involuntarily commit the person for a short duration “hold” and Psych. evaluation.
The deputies were surprisingly empathetic and allowed the person ample time to decide which way it would play out. The person eventually hopped into the ambulance and went to a local hospital for his/her Psych. evaluation. The Psych. evaluation was uneventful and everyone went on with their lives. Was it inconvenient and annoying for that person and their family? Yes. Would it have been a God-send had the person truly been suicidal? Yes. Do I agree with the process? Yes.
Note: once “the authorities” (deputies in this case) contacted the “at risk” person, that “at risk” person had to have a guardian (deputies, ambulance staff, hospital staff) until cleared. That is where Oxford Schools failed in my opinion. They clearly had reason to believe that a student was distraught or else they would not have yanked the student and called-in his parents. And yet they failed to ensure that the student had a guardian until a formal Psych. evaluation and turned him loose. Epic fail.
and we’ll never know whether that individual agreeing to “go for a ride” did not, as that proceedure played out, realise that hey, ai AM worth somethingn look at how these folks are taking care for ME, and that was enough to turn him about and reconsider his foul thoughts and plans.

(That process being the deciding factor because the concerned caller, deputies, ambulance staff, and hospital staff exerting all of that effort tangibly demonstrated that the at-risk person was valuable at a time when the at-risk person believed that he/she had no value.)

It other words by refusing to give new citizenship to recently arrived immigrants, the immigrants quit coming and the Rulers of Rome made the economic downturn far worse than it otherwise might have been.
Roman family life disintegrated because of a lack of jobs for the men who became abusive to their wives and families and they then turned to alcohol and promiscuity. Even the Emperor Augustus ( who regularly raped teenage girls) bemoaned the decline in morals of the average Roman citizen. He actually attempted to start a new Morals revival.
The gap in wealth between the Roman elite of society who had the best of food and medical care and consumer items and the average impoverished citizen provoked a deep hatred of the Roman Government and of Rome itself. When the Barbarians invaded the people of Rome threw flowers at the feat of the Barbarian Invaders. If the Canadians ever invaded the corrupt U.S. I am sure many Americans would also throw flowers at their feet.
Our current situation in the U.S. is so different than what I experienced as a young boy growing up in the 50’s that it often seems as though I am living in a different country. The America I knew where it was safe to walk down the street, safe to go shopping, and safe to go to school does not exist anymore.
The gap in income between the rich and the working people is now obscene and is only getting worse and so are societies problems. The U.S. is coming apart at the seams and is ripe for a new fake “Messiah” to claim that “Only he can make America Great Again” just as Hitler did in 1930’s Germany and Trump did in 2017. The result was a disaster for both Germany and the U.S. Germany was torn apart with racial injustices and later a world war and Trump did the same to American, deliberately pitting Americans against each other and was contemplating a civil war and hostile take over of the government to save his failed presidency. It was a miracle we avoided civil war and a Trump Right Wing Hitlerite dictatorship which the Far Right cheered for.
In conclusion is it any wonder why the American family is disintegrating with divorce rates at all time highs and in many cases two parent families ceasing to exist and neglected latch key children realizing that they have no future are going insane and committing mass murder over trifling incidents at school?
Postscript. In my 8 years of primary school in the 1950’s I knew of just one divorced family, you read that right just one. Today the average suburban school would probably have well over 50 per cent of the families divorced and it would be much higher in the poor inner cities where unemployment and underemployment and poverty are at an all time high.

hmmm…no. The reason the “prosecutor went after the parents” and charged them with with four counts each of involuntary manslaughter is because they contributed. They gave a 15 year old kid a handgun for Christmas and gave him access to the gun, they knew he was trying to buy ammunition, they knew of his mental health problems when they met with the principal and they failed to consent to his removal and a few hours later this walking talking time bomb went off, and they are the parents and are legally responsible for their kids behavior.
This was also compounded by the school failing to act properly, I mentioned this previously above. I would have charged the parents with something too, I would want to charge the school staff involved also if I could.
This could have been prevented – no one tried to stop it from happening by removing the kid and getting him help when they should have and knew it, no one helped the kid and he was literally and figuratively asking for help and had even warned of his impending explosion.

I wonder if it would be more appropriate for the prosecutor to charge the parents for being an accessory (to murder) before the fact rather than manslaughter? Maybe that is splitting hairs.
I suppose, in order for the parents to be accessories before the fact, the parents would have to be knowingly furthering the commission of the crime (murder in this case). I seriously doubt that the parents provided the murder weapon to their child knowing that he was going to murder someone.
And I am having trouble seeing how the manslaughter charge can stick because there was no conduct that was inherently dangerous. (Millions of parents have unsecured firearms in their homes and millions of children never use those firearms to attack people.) As someone else stated, no one secures the keys to their cars at home: if the student stole the car keys and then drove the car over people, we would not consider the parents guilty of manslaughter.
Perhaps this has almost nothing to do with the parents purchasing and keeping a handgun unsecured at home in general. Rather, perhaps this is all about the parents refusing to do anything after the conference at school where they learned that their son was very likely in a very dark place emotionally. In other words maybe that is not so much a function of a firearm as it is a function of the parents failing to immediately pull their child out of school and into some sort of behavioral/psychological evaluation/intervention.
Had the son drawn a ghoulish picture of driving a car over fellow-students with the same captions, the parents refused to act upon that (leaving their son at school), and then the son later that day stole a family car and drove over several students, perhaps the prosecutor would be charging the parents with manslaughter just the same.

I place most blame here on the shooter and parents but it’s baffling to me that they wouldn’t at least conduct a search of his backpack and locker if he was going to be there.
The latitude of schools to do such searches is broad. They do not need a warrant, and do not need probable cause. The behavior of the student that day is clearly sufficient to meet a reasonable grounds standard. Schools will strip a student to search for an aspirin but won’t check someone’s bag for a gun when they are acting like that and literally writing “HELP”?

You know the answer to that – A Leftist Scum is first, above all else, loyal to their party line. They can’t risk the possibility of having their dogma questioned.
Pretty much the same as the recent incident where a concerned father showed up at the school board to question them on why they automatically allowed to let a male student use the girl’s bathroom, who then raped his daughter when she was in there.
And to top it off, the school district simply placed that kid in another nearby school, where he made a similar attack on another female student.
The Leftist Scum will literally protect a violent sexual offender than to report that kid to the police. There’s a backlash brewing that will make itself apparent in the mid-term elections next year…
While schools protecting sexual offenders is a real issue, I suspect this is a case of incompetence over malicious intent.
Sounds to me like the kid may have had a psychotic break “The thoughts won’t stop. Help me,”

He would have an uphill battle given the premeditation involved.
It is worrying, however. While I have sympathy for those with mental issues that leave them in such a state I don’t want them to ever endanger society again. If that means a psychiatric facility for life instead of prison, I’m fine with that. but there’s too much risk that they get let go when they color in the lines for a couple years…

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said the investigation’s findings will determine whether school officials will be charged in last Tuesday’s attack at Oxford High School.”
I hope they do charge the school officials. They could have kept this from happening, and they did not.
