From across the pond comes this little bon mot: an ad intended to promote the idea that replica guns (here in the Colonies we call them “toys”) are being converted to real guns. Um . . . not so much. I don’t know if they know ANYTHING about guns in the Land of Boiled Food, but I’m telling you now that so-called “replica” guns are not real weapons that have been modified to be non-firing. Period. And if you tried to convert one to shoot, at best you’d end up with a one-shot-goodbye scenario where the entire thing would either not fire at all (most likely) or blow itself to bits.
The concept that English kids are buying replica guns, converting them, then going around playing “gang war” and shooting each other in the head is just absurd. And I don’t mean “absurd” in a Monty Python kind of funny way, either.
Apparently, it’s not enough for the toffee-nosed, malodorous gun grabbers of England to disarm the country with real guns. They want all the toy guns off the market, too.
I can’t believe the land that gave us the Magna Carta, the Beatles, and Arthur Treacher’s Fish n’ Chips could be this boneheaded.
There's actually been this sort of nonsense here also. The most popular are the airsoft guns because those actually look like real weapons and are heavy (pot metal) rather than plastic. My son's airsoft gun has an accessory rail that can accept add-ons from real M-16 type stuff, like tripods, slings, sights, etc. There was a report about a month ago of a shipment of airsoft guns confiscated by the police. It was advertised as a seizure of military style weapons. Total crap.
My take on it is that they want to "erase" the gun culture by starting with the young. Never played with toy guns as a kid? No desire for real guns as an adult. At least that's the only thing that makes any sense out of the above ad.
From this, to security camera everywhere, to police that stop people from taking pictures because “You can’t just go round taking photos” (see http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/06/29/police_photo_bother_romford for more info on that beaut), the wheels have come off of the UK’s bus.
