Retail firearm sales remain steady and are still above historic norms. August 2021’s figures rose slightly over July 2021’s figures and this indicates that there is a continued strong and steady demand from Americans choosing to exercise their Second Amendment rights.

August 2021’s adjusted totals are the second strongest of any August, only behind the outlier year of 2020 – when 21 million background checks were conducted for gun sales. So far in 2021, there have been over 12.4 million background checks for the sale of a firearm. That is within striking distance of 2019’s full year totals, when 13.2 million background checks were conducted for a gun sale. Four months remain, during which firearm sales historically rise.

The continued demand for lawful firearm ownership is notable because it comes at a time when the Biden administration is pushing to achieve their radical gun control agenda. President Joe Biden nominated a gun control lobbyist to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, is calling for the repeal of the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA) to allow activist lawyers to sue firearm manufacturers into oblivion, and is pursuing end-runs around Congress through proposed rules that are outside the Executive Branch’s Constitutional authority. Americans are choosing a different path.

Americans acted upon their God-given right to keep and bear arms over 1.3 million times in August. That sends a clear signal that Americans are choosing their gun rights over the Biden administration’s gun control.

The August 2021 NSSF-adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) figure of 1,328,518 is a decrease of 21.1 percent compared to the August 2020 NSSF-adjusted NICS figure of 1,684,083. For comparison, the unadjusted August 2021 FBI NICS figure 2,697,234 reflects a 12.6 percent decrease from the unadjusted FBI NICS figure of 3,085,227 in August 2020.

The August 2021 figures were the second strongest for the month on record, surpassed only by August 2020, when 1,684,083 background checks for a firearm sale were conducted.

The total NSSF-adjusted NICS January – August 2021 reflects a decrease of 10.3% compared to the same time period in 2020.

Please note: Twenty-five states currently have at least one qualified alternative permit, which under the Brady Act allows the permit-holder, who has undergone a background check to obtain the permit, to purchase a firearm from a licensed dealer without a separate additional background check for that transfer. The number of NICS checks in these states does not include these legal transfers based on qualifying permits and NSSF does not adjust for these transfers. Recently, the states of Alabama and Michigan had law changes that affected their Brady Law standing which removed qualifying alternate permits usage for firearm transactions.

The adjusted NICS data were derived by subtracting out NICS purpose code permit checks and permit rechecks used by states for CCW permit application checks as well as checks on active CCW permit databases. NSSF started subtracting permit rechecks in February 2016.

Though not a direct correlation to firearms sales, the NSSF-adjusted NICS data provide an additional picture of current market conditions. In addition to other purposes, NICS is used to check transactions for sales or transfers of new or used firearms. It should be noted that these statistics represent the number of firearm background checks initiated through the NICS. They do not represent the number of firearms sold or sales dollars. Based on varying state laws, local market conditions and purchase scenarios, a one-to-one correlation cannot be made between a firearm background check and a firearm sale.

    • I don’t even bother reading his drivel. He has no idea what he is talking about and just shows his ignorance by putting his thoughts down. Just ignore him. I just wish this forum had a way to block them completely.

      • I read his drivel and then refute it so harshly and widely that he tucks tail and goes right back to his mom’s demand action meeting for emotional support and a soy milk. It’s important to destroy ideas such as those as publicly as possible, and has brutally as possible, not so much as to send him somewhere to spin stress balls in his hand, but to convince rational people with legitimate doubts.

        • Did you ask them about removing your front sight on your M&P Sport 2?
          I used to deal with Eric Gutridge down the street but he died.
          He built a couple of my 1911s and tuned all of them.
          He was very good IF he was in a good mood.
          I used to make many trips to Blythes and scored some obscure things.
          This was a long time ago but they had Santa Barbara ammo.
          I like their shop but it’s been a while.
          That being said a decent gunsmith with a press can remove that sight/gasblock in 5 minutes. No pounding away like an idiot.
          It’s a serious PITA, they aren’t lying on YouTube.
          I put a Yankee Hill gasblock/flip up sight on mine, $100 at Midway.
          Kept the Magpul rear flip up and put on a red dot.
          With the the flip us up everything co-witnesses perfectly.
          I keep them down and use the red dot but if it ever goes out, I have irons.
          I have an old Bushnell Trophy TRS-25 on it and it’s held up well.

    • My 88 is my house shotgun. 7+1 in a simple, reliable gun. I think I paid 179 for mine. It’s been a few years.

      • Seems like we all have one. I also have the 7+1 configuration. It’s not a mossberg 590, but seems to work fine all the same.

      A P99 example was missing in my Walther collection.
      P5 (P5 Lang😄), P88, P99, PPQ. Around half a century of Walther SD handgun development is represented in those four models.

    The results of the ban on Russian ammo imports have not yet been fully felt.

    Once the current permittted imports are done in a month or so, now everyone who used to buy steel case will be buying brass case.

    More money chasing the same amount of ammunition means prices will inevitably rise even morel
