“Out of the heartbreak of Parkland a new generation of Americans all across the country marched for our lives and towards a better, safer America for us all.” Someone in the White House who still has full command of the English language penned that line as part of a statement to be issued on the fourth anniversary of the Parkland shooting.

“Together, this extraordinary movement is making sure that the voices of victims and survivors and responsible gun owners are louder than the voices of gun manufacturers and the National Rifle Association.”

Exactly. Biden’s statement ticks all the boxes so he can say he made a strong stand for gun control to placate the civilian disarmament constituency that’s become an important part of the Democrats’ base. The only surprise is a lack of any mention of white supremacy or domestic terrorism.

As the AP reports . . .

Biden said he’s asked members of Congress to provide funding to help reduce violent crime and said they must pass legislation requiring background checks on all gun sales, banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines and eliminating immunity for gun manufacturers.

“We can never bring back those we’ve lost,” Biden said. “But we can come together to fulfill the first responsibility of our government and our democracy: to keep each other safe. For Parkland, for all those we’ve lost, and for all those left behind, it is time to uphold that solemn obligation.”

Conveniently left out of the White House’s statement, of course, is a recounting of all of the failures of existing gun control laws and government officials at almost every level that resulted in Nikolas Cruz murdering 17 people four years ago. There were the ignored FBI reports. The literally dozens of interactions with local police, none of which resulted in the murderer’s arrest or conviction.

There was the school district’s willingness to keep a violent, unstable kid in school despite dozens of red flags like fights, threats of rape and murder, bringing knives to school, and banning him from bringing a backpack into any Broward County school (that went well, didn’t it?).

And then there was this guy . . .

When all of the other system failures eventually led to a shooting inside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, this armed individual on duty stood by and listened why seventeen people were murdered and fourteen more were wounded that day.

In other words, gun control laws and government functionaries failed in almost every possible way to stop the Parkland shooting.

I’ve asked Congress to pass a budget that provides an additional half billion dollars for proven strategies we know reduce violent crime — accountable community policing and community violence interventions. I have also requested increased funding for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the U.S. Marshals. And Congress must do much more — beginning with requiring background checks on all gun sales, banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and eliminating immunity for gun manufacturers.

All the same garbage regurgitated in all the same ways by the White House. Yadda, yadda, yadda. Give the old guy another pudding cup.

On this anniversary, during which the gun  control industry takes such pleasure in dancing in the blood of the dead, the President will just have to forgive the rest of us who look at what actually happened in Broward County that day and fail to conclude that the solution is still more government and more restrictions on Americans’ ability to arm and protect themselves.

      For some reason the government and law thinks mass shooters are something like vampires and can be repelled with a “gun free” zone sign. Surely the criminal or mass shooter starts to enter the area and sees a sign that says “no guns” or “Gun Free Zone” or something similar and they run away in fear of the sign. That happens, right?

    • Meanwhile four years later they haven’t even punished the criminal who committed the crime, probably wouldn’t even have completed his trial to convict him yet if he hadn’t plead guilty in October. Though Florida republicrats like gov/senator Rick Scott and (then and many still current) Republican leadership were quick to punish lawful Florida gun owners with bump stock bans, age restrictions, increased waiting periods, and red flag laws that confiscate guns from law abiding Floridians who haven’t been convicted of a crime. Don’t forget Florida Republican leadership even tried to pass a two year AR-15 sale moratorium using a voice vote.

      I am a gun owner, I support gun rights, support gun manufacturers, I want less or no restrictions on my rights to buy, make, sell, build, or acquire guns, and I also want kids to be safe at school, at home, and in society. But I still recognize that no amount of wishful thinking or legislation will make anyone safe, even with best intentions. And true freedom should never be sacrificed on the altar of a desire for public safety.

      So Mr. President’s handlers, in honor of freedom I will buy a high capacity magazine today. Because I want to. And I can. And Magpul sent me a discount code. Happy Valentine’s Day!

    This is an example of how Progressives try to manipulate people emotionally to support their goals. People have a deep and inherent need to be part of a large and homogeneous family and community. Progressives know that and are forever appealing to the masses to join them and “come together”. (Ooh, my toes are tingling just thinking about it!) Progressives also use that to coerce the masses to join them, playing on people’s fears of being an “outsider” if they fail to join.

    That claim is wrong on both a factual and practical level. On a factual level government’s responsibility to is ensure our liberty, not our safety, since liberty includes the free choice to do something that is inherently unsafe (such as skydiving for just one of countless examples). On a practical level “safety” is totally arbitrary and a “blank check” which government can infinitely exploit to abuse/violate our rights.

    The proper RIGHTEOUS role of government is national defense (defending against foreign attacks) and punishing evil-doers who harm our fellow citizens.

    • 2:19 p.m.: Cruz arrived at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School via an Uber. He had all his gear with him packed away.

      2:21 p.m. Cruz entered Building 12. As he was entering a school staff member who had been previously warned that he was a threat to students and knew he should not be there saw him and did nothing to challenge him or raise the alarm. Instead the school staff member let him proceed to roam freely.

      After being seen by the staff member, Cruz enters a stairwell and begins unpacking his gear. While unpacking his gear in the stairwell Cruz is encountered by another student who sees the gun and gear and Cruz basically told him something bad was going to happen and to get out. The student found a coach and reported it to him, the coach led the student away to another area and turned to look back at the school but did not sound the alarm despite the coach also being a ‘school safety/security’ person with this as one of his primary tasks in that position.

      The shooting started, and for the first three minutes of the attack no alarm was raised (except for the student). During this time Cruz was able to kill 11 and wound 13.

      2:22 p.m.: The school’s fire alarm goes off, prompting students to begin evacuating. This is also when the first 911 call went out. Students think this is a fire drill because no warnings were announced so don’t take it too seriously but evacuation does begin in a “Oh no, not another fire drill” way. Students on the upper floors haven’t heard the weapons fire from the lower floors loud enough to think it was anything important. Until this point the only alarm that has been raised was by the student that encountered Cruz in the stairwell, the students report was basically ignored by the coach.

      2:23 p.m.: The school resource officer, Deputy Scot Peterson, issues a radio alert warning of shots fired. “Be advised we have possible — could be firecrackers. I think we have shots fired, possible shots fired, 1200 building,” he said. Peterson goes to the southeast corner of Building 12, where he remained for the duration of the incident never entering the building in an attempt to locate and stop Cruz.

      2:28 p.m.: Cruz exits the school and runs toward the tennis courts and heads south. He blends into a crowd of students as they flee the campus. He goes to Walmart, then gets a drink at the Subway inside Walmart then is on to his way to McDonalds.

      3:01 p.m.: Cruz goes to a McDonald’s restaurant, sits down for a bit, then leaves.

      Cruz has been on foot, then…

      3:41 p.m.: An officer with the Coconut Creek Police Department spots Cruz in a nearby neighborhood and arrests him.

      The actual time for the victims to get shot was four minutes, the total rampage was about six minutes (he spent time shooting down empty hallways and through doors but not hitting anyone – in the teachers lounge on the third floor he was foiled some from shooting students running away outside by the hurricane proof windows in the lounge), and at about seven minutes after entering the school he ditches the gun in a stairwell and departs the school at 2:28 p.m to blend in with those fleeing. For the first three minutes no one did anything to raise the alarm despite knowing Cruz was there, except for a lone student who encountered Cruz and was basically ignored when he reported it.

    1. Failure to get a troubled teen mental help.

    2. Lack of access to a persons mental health records by the Brady check system let Cruz pass the background check.

    3. Failure of the Parent he was staying with to keep his gun under lock and key (Cruz was given a key to the safe)

    4. Failure of the FBI to arrest Cruz when he was turned in by a fellow classmate with more than enough proof to have him locked up and committed to a mental institution.

    5. Failure by a coward Cop who hid behind a car and let Cruz kill all the students he wanted to.

    6. Failure of the Government to re-classify assault weapons as NFA weapons which would never have allowed Cruz to buy one because of their in depth vetting procedures.

      There was no mental health record in the system, period. A mental health counselor advised against involuntary committing Cruz, so he was not committed thus no record. An investigator for the Florida Department of Children and Families ruled Cruz as stable thus no record. Minors, and people, in Florida don’t have mental health treatment records established if they are not committed and are ruled stable. There was no record that could have been accessed, there was not a lack of access.

      It wasn’t an assault weapon. It was a standard semi-auto commercially available rifle. Such is not qualified as an “assault rifle”, and can not be qualified as an “assault rifle” under standard testing for such things as tested for suitability as an assault weapon by the U.S. Government.

      An NFA background check for an individual is basically no different from the background check used for purchase of non-NFA firearms, its not any more indepth. Its just different paperwork and a fee of $200.00 for the tax stamp. If a standard background check did not catch him submitting for an NFA classed ri8fel would not have caught him either. He had no mental health record, no disqualifying arrests, hearsay is not admissible, complaints are not admissible, none of his engagement with law enforcement to that point were disqualifying.

        Cruz had a mental health record and arrest record a mile long easily accessible by law enforcement and would have been accessible by the much more through NFA background check which can take months and often does.

        Also law enforcement has arrested people and jailed them for only posting a few lines of threats on social media. They did not do this with Cruz even after his classmate revealed numerous threats and racist ranting’s by Cruz.

        Psychiatrists recommended an involuntary admission of Cruz to a residential treatment facility, starting in 2013.[97] The Florida Department of Children and Families investigated him in September 2016 for Snapchat posts in which he cut both his arms and said he planned to buy a gun. At this time, a school resource officer suggested[98] he undergo an involuntary psychiatric examination under the provisions of the Baker Act. Two guidance counselors agreed, but a mental institution did not.[99] State investigators reported he had depression, autism, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In their assessment, they concluded he was “at low risk of harming himself or others.”[100] He had previously received mental health treatment, but had not received treatment in the year leading up to the shooting.[91]

        Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel described Cruz’s online profiles and accounts as “very, very disturbing.”[91] They contained pictures and posts of him with a variety of weapons, including long knives, a shotgun, a pistol, and a BB gun.         You just proved you do not know your ass from a hole in the ground as the NFA background check is not a quickie check sometimes conducted in minutes as done by the Brady Bill Check. NFA checks are in depth and take months to complete. One of the big complaints about the Brady Check is that they just do not have the time to thoroughly check people out before the gun dealer can go ahead and sell the gun even without clearance by the Brady Bill Check people when they take more than their allotted time.

          You can have all sorts of ‘police reports’ but having ‘police reports’ is not disqualifying for purchase of a firearm. Arrests and convictions for felonies are disqualifying and he had none of this.

          A suicide attempt is not disqualifying. I think you misunderstand the extent of mental health records and treatment.

          A person who tries to commit suicide is not considered a risk of harm to others – attempts to commit suicide are not about others, they are about the person attempting to commit suicide. This was a troubled teen, and he should have gotten help, but no one helped him and that’s sad – but a bunch of people saying this and that and generating reports and doing assessments and calling the police and generating police reports and logs, IS NOT DISQUALIFYING FOR PURCHASE AND POSSESSION OF A FIREARM – PERIOD. you need to get that through your thick head and stop it with the false premise you have that some way or another all this was disqualifying.

          Threatening to shoot up a school is not in its self an arrest’able offense if the intent AND means can’t be shown. It should be investigated yes, and no one is saying the FBI did not screw up by not doing this but at the time that you claim this supposed “evidence’ existed from all these people saying this and that there was no evidence, there was hearsay and a bunch of stuff in various reports – but no evidence that was disqualifying.

          Police service logs information is not disqualifying for purchase and possession, doesn’t matter what they say.

          It doesn’t matter how many people say he should have been committed – he wasn’t. We all think you should be committed.

          A school “threat assessment” is not disqualifying for firearms purchase.

          It might have been different if he was actually committed but he wasn’t – it might have been different had the FBI gone further and investigated like they should have – it might have been different if the sheriffs department had done their job and also thoroughly investigated instead of just writing up reports – it might have been different if the school had actually reported all this stuff to the FBI or the sheriffs department but they didn’t and inserted their selves into something they had no business assessing by their selves – It might have been different if an agency of the state of Florida did not say he was stable (and thus not really a risk to others) – it might have been different if a lot of things would have been done that should have been done but they weren’t done – and through all this a lot of people saying a lot of things and making notes and reports, yet none of it disqualifying for purchase and possession of a firearm because they spent time saying a lot of things and making notes and reports instead of acting.

          There was simply no substance here that was disqualifying for purchase and possession of the firearm.

          An NFA background check, the check its self, is no different from the background check for a non-NFA item. The process to get to that check is different because the process for purchase of the NFA item is different and takes longer, but the background check its self is no different. Yes, it really is a ‘quickie’ check.

  12. This was a lesson in how bad the government could fuck up and then try to deflect the blame. Lets be real here this was a failure on so many levels by so many agencies to actually take care of this guy with avenues that were already there for their use.

    Instead we had a school that didn’t take into account serious security flaws (despite having millions in the bank to fix them,) a sheriff’s department working with the school to cook the books on crime for “racial justice dollars,” An FBI asleep at the wheel ignoring flat out terrorist threats and a school “resource” officer that was as useful as spark plugs on a birthday cake. The sheriff got fired then rehired and no one else has seen any measure of accountability from the government about this.

    Yet some how it’s the populace of US that is at fault for this because of things they own?
