Grant Von Letkemann is, by his own assertion, no redneck, beer-swilling Bambi shooter or survivalist. But the Boulder Rifle Club (BRC) Prez realizes that his home-away-from-home is right next to the homes of a lot of left-leaning people who see gun entusiasts in precisely those terms. Residents who’d just as soon see the Club leave town. The news that a stray rifle round penetrated a house near the range has brought the BRC under fire. Unfairly, he suggests to dailycamera.com. “Grant Von Letkemann, president of the private shooting range, said witnesses and logs at the range show that only one person was shooting at the club at 4:30 p.m. Sunday — about the same time that a bullet smashed through a window of a home in the 3900 block of Pebble Beach Drive . . .

He said a certified National Rifle Association instructor was using the range to teach another person how to shoot. They were using ‘sub-powered’ loads of ammunition, he said, which could not have reached the home to the north. “I feel confident in saying that it didn’t come from our range,” Von Letkemann said. “We emphasize safety more than anything else out there.”

Meanwhile, one of our commentators has raised the idea that the incident a hoax . . .

The homeowner in question, Jeff Boxer, certainly had the means. He’s a crime scene investigator. He also had the opportunity; he could hear when shots were being fired at the nearby club. Motive? Boxer’s called for the range to be shut down pending an investigation. Common sense or a grudge? Doth he protest too much when he says

I am not here to pillory the Boulder Rifle Club . . . It may have been an accident. My only concern is the safety of Boulder citizens.

In any case, Boulder cops are investigating. And how.

Sheriff’s Cmdr. Heidi Prentup said Wednesday that Detective Eric Simpson has been conducting interviews and investigating the scene at Jeff Boxer’s rental home. Prentup said the incident is being investigated as a case of criminal mischief and reckless endangerment.

Yes, but—by whom?
