When people hold events they call “gun violence forums,” why does it always seem the proposals that result focus solely on the “gun” part of the equation and not the “violence”? Probably because they see it as easier to restrict gun ownership than to actually deal with the issue of violence in our society. So it’s really no surprise that the recent, ahem, gun violence forum that resulted from the Santa Monica shooting earlier this year has resulted in California congressman Henry Waxman  proposing legislation to make it illegal to sell gun “kits” on the internet . . .

From the LA NBC station:

“It’s scary to know anybody can just build their own weapon nowadays like nothing, and innocent people have to suffer the consequences,” Enriquez said.

Waxman said he’ll introduce a federal law to ban the Internet sale of gun kits that allow people to build their own homemade assault weapons.

“Out-of-state stores sell special California magazine repair kids that appear to be weapons that are banned in California,” Waxman said.

It looks like legislators are finally beginning to realize that guns aren’t magical devices that require an anointed high priest to bless them before they springs to life. People can actually make them in their basements without any outside help. They’re starting to realize just how porous their gun control laws are, and now they’re trying to find ways to close those loopholes.

I’d expect the proposed laws to become more and more draconian the more they comprehend how easy it is to build your own gun. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if they want to implement background checks on buying metal piping from Home Depot.

    I would appreciate if Mr. Enriquez could provide JUST ONE example in California’s records that show that a gun built by a gun owner (as opposed to a manufacturer, an off the shelf gun) was used by that owner in a crime or even if someone had ever built a gun, to be used by anyone, specifically for use in a crime.

    I’m betting he can provide exactly ZERO examples of this happening. Such is California, just make laws based on your own irrational justification born out of your fear and need to control that which you can’t.

    The more you tighten your grip, Enriquez, the more star systems will slip through your fingers.

    • Didn’t the shooter at Santa Monica build his own AR starting with an 80% receiver? I think the point is not that it has happened, but that it is irrelevant as it is completely unenforceable, unless people would do background checks on every possible raw material or component.

      Personally, I think people being able to build their own weapons is absolutely WONDERFUL. Yes, some knucklehead may hurt himself or others, but freedom is messy that way. Only way to eliminate risk is to eliminate freedom.

      • yea but if you look carefully that Santa Monica shooting was fake as all hell just like about 98 % of all of the so called mass shootings .. they said he had 1500 rounds and a spare upper in a bag haha that would have been very heavy ,,and a black powder pistol because they were gonna attack the curio and relic side also , but that fell to the way side . what criminal would bring a separate upper hahaha what a joke .. no bloody drag marks by his dead body they supposedly dragged out for safety tennis shoes fell off and laying there but the surveillance video picture they released of the perpetrator is wearing tactical boots come on !!! they think we are all dumb .. the sad thing is that there are far to many people sitting at home watching the government owned mass media machine and they believe everything they see on the boob tube and they know that fact and they exploit it and get dumb people scared enough to go along with just about anything

        • That’s yet another reason why it might be a very good idea to turn to state legislatures and governors and even counties and cities. Simply refuse to comply or assist in the enforcement of unconstitutional federal laws: For example:

    Provide at least ONE example of such. Either put up or shut up.

    What America needs is a ditch digger large enough to carve California from the mainland so it falls off into the ocean.

    Being that’s not an option I suggest recall elections for every one of these gun grabbers like was done in Colorado.

      • Me to lol at least Colorado has a backbone and stands up for the constitution I’m in upstate NY and its terrible here. People protest all the time about our gay governors safe act but it gets us nowhere ever

          • What makes it even weirder is that Gov. Moonbeam just recently signed anti\-indefinite detention legislation, defying the NSA. It might not be much, but the longest trip starts with one step.

            On the other hand, I wish somebody would ask him why he doesn’t support the whole Constitution!

  9. Can anyone here point any examples of anyone using a kit gun in a crime? Throughout the entire United States? Has the liberator been used in any crimes?

      • AR is not a kit gun and the Santa Monica shooter never made any of the parts. Plus, the dumb-ass Congressman seems to forget he had a Cap & Ball conversion revolver as a handgun. Waxman is part of the Ding Bat Caucus of which Cali has the most members, Feinstink, Stretch Pelosi, Maximouth Waters, and Boxer.

        • So what do you call it when you start with an 80% receiver, then add the other parts individually? Saying an AR is not a “kit gun” is playing semantic games when you can, in fact, build it from parts, starting with a non-serialized, non-registered, 80% receiver.

        • @505MarkF Where are these legal to own non-serialized non-registered AR lower receivers you speak of?

          A lower receiver is a firearm, stripped, partially built, still a firearm. Obviously it requires lots of parts to function, but none the less it is a fire arm subject to all the laws and regulations same as any other firearm.

  10. Yeah, because a 10/22 is used in so many crimes. I know he is aiming for ARs with this, I used the 10/22 because it has to be the most customizable gun out there. And my Boyd’s stock makes it an “Assault Weapon” now.

    • And 7075 T6 aluminum. And titanium. And nickel. Heck, you could probably even make a lower out of magnesium! (when you machine magnesium, you get chips that if you set them on fire, you can’t put it out with water or CO2 – you have to smother it with sand. Fun stuff!)

      • Even then… That magnesium needs time in sand.

        Yes, I’ve seen it burn in water. It’s one reason magnesium is used in flares… once lit, it stays lit until its consumed itself.

I think the politician gun grabbers actions are really about government wanting greater control over the masses of common people they look down upon and the emotional needs of politicians seeking to be looked up to like a leader or super hero. Bottom line: I consider most of the people in politics emotionally unbalanced and unfit for office.

    I didn’t know it was legal to sell child laborers… But damn, those must be some pretty smart kids if they know how to take apart a magazine and repair it! I wish I had that kind of firearms experience when I was a kid…

    • You should move on up here to Oregon. That’s what my family and I did. I think California is too far gone, but with enough patriots, we can save Oregon.

      It speaks to a phenomenon that came into sharp focus with the economic crisis of ’08. There’s an extravagantly compensated “bullshitter” class in this country, whether they work on Wall Street or in Washington. They’re such consummate bullshitters that they’ve convinced themselves that it is, in fact, they who are essential to the running of society. It is they who bring in the harvest and keep the power plants running. It is they who make the internet and global telecommunications possible. It is they who produce everything from cars to Cracker Jacks.

      So when they’re presented with one of those insignificant “little people” and forced to confront the fact that this person can produce an artifact of civilization and they cannot, the cognitive dissonance strikes at the very core of their being.

    • a real true number is impossible because ALMOST all these shooting are fake so you cant count victims that dont exist but i would bet money that no one has been killed from and 80% lower built rifle most of the people building these are law abiding Americans that just love being able to save money and have pride of craftsmanship they love their guns and would tend not to wanna do anything stupid that would jeopardize their rights i am one of those persons i built my own and i love it

    • I’ve seen a vehicle called a “Freeway” which was the back wheel and motor of
      a motorcycle, a driver seat with two axles and wheels about as far apart as a
      small car’s, that could have been assembled by, say, any guy who could put together IKEA stuff, for example. The front was like the nose of an airplane.

      I believe electric cars will be feasible competitive when they come up with a battery that can go 250 miles at freeway speeds and recharge in 10 minutes.
