Garland County, Arkansas, has restored the right of county employees to bear arms. Political subdivisions are restoring the rights of their workers to defend themselves. As the right to keep and bear arms has been incrementally restored across the nation, city, county, and state employees are having the restrictions that had been placed on their rights relaxed or removed.

The Garland County Quorum Court voted Monday night to allow county employees with concealed-carry permits to take firearms to work.

Justices of the peace defeated repeated motions to give the plan more consideration before voting 9-3 in favor of it. Justices of the Peace Denise Marion, Dave Reagan and Ellen Varhalla voted against the ordinance.

Garland County is just the latest jurisdiction to allow employees to carry on the job. Counties in Georgia, Virginia, Kansas, North Carolina, Michigan, and Texas have lifted similar restrictions in the last four years.

One of the officials voting against the measure expressed concerns about appearances.

“What message are we sending citizens who conduct business at county offices when they’re served by an armed clerk or elected official?” Reagan read from a prepared statement. “Will we post signs at county offices warning taxpayers they’ll be served by an armed employee?

“We are a modern, civilized society, not the lawless Wild West of the 1800s.”

Of course, citizens conducting business with the county can already be legally armed. And since the employees who choose to arm themselves with be doing so via concealed carry, no one’s delicate sensibilities are likely to be assaulted.

The message being sent by the change is that we are a nation of laws and limited government. That in the United States, the government is the servant of the people, instead of the other way around. If Mr. Reagan wishes to send a different message, he’s free to work toward the repeal of the Second Amendment.

When governments don’t trust the people they serve with arms, they are sending the message that we have regressed to the level of other tyrannical governments, where people have no rights other than those the rulers choose to grant them.

A free society has no problem trusting its people with arms. Societies that govern from the top down do.

  1. .gov employees armed with guns don’t frighten me. It’s the one’s armed with pens and clipboards that scare the shit out of me.

  2. “We are a modern, civilized society, not the lawless Wild West of the 1800s.”

Tell that to the residents of inner-city Chicago, Baltimore, etc, etc…

  3. The 101st airborne division had to be deployed by republican president Eisenhower to enforce civil rights law in Arkansas.
Now Arkansas restores civil rights on its own.

Mean while in liberal California and New York white liberals are taking away civil rights.
Boy how the times have changed!!!
