A pair of Detroit carjackers figured Alaina (she didn’t want to give her last name) would be an easy target. A woman alone, walking back to her sleek black SUV. But these guys didn’t play around. Accosting Alaina as she walked to her truck, one of them started shooting as they attempted to steal the vehicle. Alaina, though, wasn’t having any of that. See, she’s a Michigan CPL holder, and she did what these guys never expect: she shot right back.

Alaina was shot and wounded. Her vehicle was hit several times, but she has a concealed pistol permit and she returned fire.

She doesn’t know if she hit any of the thugs and now she’s left with an undriveable, bullet-riddled SUV and a hole in her left hand from an “AK.” She had to leave her job waiting tables, plus she has three small children to care for. But Alaina’s life could be a lot worse. As in her could be over.

“If I didn’t, I believe they would have shot us dead instead of shooting and running. So I am glad that I did have my weapon,” Alaina said.

  1. Maybe I’m out in left field with this, but this doesn’t track with a carjacker’s MO.The entire point of a carjacking is to lift someones car,and you can’t do that with a bullet riddled car that’s disabled.A preemptive attack with a rifle at close range without a demand sounds more like a case of an intentional hit-either the hoods wanted her dead,or more likely she drove the same car some drug dealer does and its mistaken identity. Nevertheless, she did well.

    • “… you can’t … [steal] … a bullet riddled car that’s disabled.”

A simple explanation is that her car didn’t have any bullet holes — and hence was still desirable to the carjackers — until the gunfight erupted. At that point I can see the carjackers blasting away toward her and her car as they ran in the other direction. Thus the carjackers were no longer interested in stealing her car.

    • I know exactly what you mean. Way too often, the TV news folks are mislabeling just about any long gun as an AK-47 these days, no matter how obvious its something else. Instead of just reporting it as a “rifle”, they crank up the sensationalism machine, and out pops “AK-47”.

    • Yeah, car-jackers who carry an AK and use it wildly, that sounds like a credible story.

Don’t forget guys, David has a vested interest in documenting “legitimate” DGUs. He’s boasted of how many he can track and now he’s desperately trying to live up to it.

      • well mikeybnumbers, way to prove one of my points. there’s a touch of racism in gun laws in america and those that push for them. a person of color defends herself and you get your hackles up about the honesty of her claim. until i see evidence otherwise i will accept her story.

      • @Mikeb – You just love to make things up and put words into other peoples’ mouths. In no way was my skeptism a form of criticism towards David, but merely skeptism about the facts provided by the news source he cited and/or the report of the victim. As Fyrewerx put it above, it is very common for the news or victims to overdramatize equipment in gun related stories, due either to ignorance of sensationalism. I’m not saying it wasn’t an AK, but until confirmed I have doubts.

      • Mikey, Mikey, Mikey,
In the real world DGU’s aren’t hard to find.
Time consuming to sort maybe, but not hard to find.

        • by who’s tally do you get 500 a year? or are you pulling that number out of cherry picked stats that fit your pro gun control agenda. and you never addressed the issue of why you doubt the ladies word. in this country the basis for gun control is racism.

really legitimate clean ones. you mean dgu’s that even you can’t spin.

  2. it’s not unheard of for carjackers to shoot first during their criminal endeavors. as for am “ak” type weapon we all know how reliable reporters are at getting gun facts right.

    • i guess what i was trying to say earlier, in the abscence of any other evidence, let’s give her the benefit of the doubt. that’s what any of us would want in a dgu.

  3. Maybe something is fishy about this, or maybe it was stupid carjackers. Might be they just wanted her car for a ride and decided to shoot her over it.

Good for her for sending them running.

  4. I don’t find it immediately fishy-sounding. Some thieves prefer to eliminate witnesses upfront. I’m sure that if the victim had performed according to Bloomberg/Emmanuel standards, the SUV would have escaped injury.

  5. Her story could be a little off. Then again criminals have preemptively assaulted people to get a victim’s shoes.

  6. There does seem to be a slight trend in the increase in the number of criminal attacks using a semi-auto military style rifles. Some years ago there was only a handful or less number of such attacks.

  7. I agree. The only thing I would like to see going forward is for her to get some instruction on DGU. I can’t say for sure, but if nobody ended up in the hospital with a bullet hole in him, all of her shots missed. I can’t help but wonder if she didn’t just fire out of panic and sprayed bullets wherever. They gotta land somewhere.
