According to cnn.com, “Dennis Alexander, who is Seaside City’s mayor pro tem and a reserve officer with the Sand City Police Department, was teaching a lesson at Seaside High School in Seaside, California when he pointed his gun into the ceiling and accidentally fired it, said Abdul Pridgen, the city’s police chief.” Oh FFS . . .

Mr. Alexander didn’t accidentally fire his pistol. He negligently fired his pistol. It’s an important distinction, one that we make here all the time.

While I’m sure Mr. Alexander didn’t mean to fire his gun, he violated at least two of The Four Rules of Gun Safety: 2. Treat all firearms as if they’re loaded and 3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on your target. As they say, safety is no accident.

“I think a lot of questions on parents’ minds are, why a teacher would be pointing a loaded firearm at the ceiling in front of students,” Superintendent PK Diffenbaugh told CNN affiliate KSBW. “Clearly in this incident protocols were not followed.”

It’s unclear why the teacher was displaying the firearm.

You wanna bet? I’d bet dollars to [cop] donuts he was demonstrating gun safety. Which is something well worth doing for school children.

Unfortunately, Mr. Alexander has taught the kids that “even” professionals can’t be safe with guns. The timing couldn’t have been worse.

The [slightly injured] student’s father Fermin Gonzales said he understands that it was an accident but said that “somebody could have died.”

“It’s just so crazy, I can’t believe it,” he said.

Gonzales said Tuesday’s incident changed his views about President Donald Trump’s recent proposal to arm teachers.

“I was kinda leaning toward having armed people in school in case something happened. After today, I get why people say there should be no guns in schools,” Gonzales said.

“If there’s an accident — people could die. If it’s just one, that’s more than enough,” he added.

For giving ammo to the antis, thereby putting thousands of children in harm’s way, Mr.Alexander gets TTAG’s not-coveted IGOTD non-accolade.

      • When it comes to gun safety it’s those who think they are the safest who are the most dangerous.

        Those who are constantly concerned about the dangers of firearms and relentlessly avoid breaking any of the Big Four are….responsible at most.

        I’ve called out “safety” officials
        And range officers on safety violations. Usually they try to laugh it off or deny it happened. Big ego, fragile ego.

          Seen it myself too many times to count. The more arrogant and condescending the attitude, the bigger the fool. The surer someone is of their own superiority, the more inferior they are in actuality. Can’t recall ever seeing a single exception. And the more inflated the ego, the more fragile it becomes. Like a balloon ready to pop. And if you dare to even notice, let alone mention, a failure you witness them perform, you become the pin. Then their fragile ego pops and spews their pus all over you. Yeah, I’ve been there, too….. On ranges, in machine shops, and on and on.

    • I’m a bit wary of this group after looking at their website. While I agree with most of their stuff, Safe Storage Laws are BS. I’ve kept at least one gun unlocked and in Condition 3 for home defense since I was in college. I don’t have any kids, but I keep my stuff locked up or on my person if I’m not in the house.

  10. He should be neither a ‘reserve officer’ nor a teacher. Screw-ups like that are bad in general, but someone stupid enough to do that at a school should not have a job involving either guns or kids.

    It just boggles the mind.

    I can tell you exactly why — that dumbass was advancing the meme “see, not even police-types are safe with firearms so we cannot have guns in schools!” — as one person predictably stated in the source article.

      Hell, even in this comment thread there are videos of people being EXACTLY that stupid, if not more, probably under very similar circumstances.

  19. The defensive handgun should never come out of its holster in public unless it’s to be used to defend against an imminent threat to life and limb. This guy should have been using a bluegun or similar training aid to demonstrate with, not his carry piece.

    • Or if for whatever reason it needed to be a real firearm it should have come in the door secured in a case with a chamber flag.

    His accident is just another reason to get better with firearms, and he likely wouldn’t have a similar accident in the future, the rest of us should just assume we’re waiting for ours.

  22. How has nobody mentioned the fact that him having the gun in the class – while acting as a teacher, not security personnel – IS ILLEGAL!? That plus the discharge are 2 violations of CA gun laws. Why the hell are we all just assuming CA for some reason allows teachers to carry guns?

    One of 2 things happened here:
    1) local politician/reserve officer/math teacher commits a crime by bringing his firearm into the class, then commits another felony for a discharge that endangered innocent people around him. Then, after hearing a gunshot, nobody panics, classes continue as normal, and the parents have to call the cops after the fact.
    2) the jackwagon brought an airsoft gun as a demonstration and shot a kid in the neck with it by accident.
