Image courtesy BenchmadeA Tennessee CCW permit lets you carry a full-size 1911, a semi-automatic pistol with a five-inch barrel. So far so good. But if you carry an automatic knife like this Benchmade Adamas you’re probably breaking the law. This doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, but fortunately the Tennessee legislature is in the process of fixing the law . . .

  1. Just because you have a weapons permit does NOT mean you are covered when it comes to knives. Florida is a good example. While a Florida CWP overrides local gun regulations and prohibitions, that is not the case concerning knives, leaving permit holders open to the whims of their local PD. Many local ordinances across the state have been changed to reflect that disparity, yet in others such as the Very large Miami-Dade county, whilst one may carry essentially any firearm with a cwp, an assisted opener or a switchblade can get you arrested.

  2. I wish Ohio would jump on this bandwagon. I can carry, literally, as many handguns and as much ammo as I can strap to my body, tuck it all under an ankle length trench coat and be perfectly legal. If my pocket knife is a little too long, then I could face jail time… makes sense to me.

  3. Gotta love Idaho. An idaho “concealed weapons license” covers anything you want to carry – gun, knife, sword cane, sharp metal brim on a baseball cap, “sap gloves”, or a dangerous pair of boots. Idaho doesn’t regulate the object. All we care about here is whether your personal behavior is responsible or not, so our laws don’t get into minutia of what you are carrying concealed.

  4. Wisconsin has the same dumb rules when it comes to CCL. Glock with 15+1? Check. Full-tang 8″ Ka-Bar hanging on belt? Check. Large can of high pressure pepper spray? Check. Knife with an out-the-front automatic blade or “butterfly” knife? ILLEGAL WEAPON!

  5. I was just thinking it would be great if Texas would get the ball rolling on making auto knives legal.

  6. Tenneesee has HCP (handgun carry permits) not concealed carry permits. Open carry of firearms is legal in Tennessee with any valid HCP or ccw permit.
