For the third year in a row, constitutional carry has died under Florida’s Republican supermajority control of the state’s legislature.

Sadly, the state no longer deserves the “Gunshine State” nickname. Rather, the entire state should be called “Disney World”. Why? Because a lot of make-believe is created and sold within the borders by lawmakers. The legislative leadership advertises itself as being pro-freedom and pro-gun. Yet, time and time again, they show that isn’t the case. It’s a convenient campaign slogan and nothing more.

Constitutional carry was a hotly contested issue in Florida this session. You’ve seen the reports of the pro-constitutional carry petitions that were tossed in the garbage.

You’ve seen Governor Ron DeSantis openly call for its passage.

Now you’re going to be hearing all the excuses as to why HB 103 has died. Yet again.

The allegedly pro-gun political lapdogs and gatekeepers of the anti-gun legislative leadership have made the argument that the reason bill died is because there was no companion bill in the Senate. They used the same phony excuse last year. It’s like deja vu all over again.

But constitutional carry wasn’t the only pro-gun measure killed by GOP inaction. They also killed a bill that would have repealed a ban on the sale of ammunition and firearms during declared states of emergency. That one had companion bills in both chambers (HB 6095 & SB 1528), not that it made any difference. The Republican leadership in both the House and Senate refused to move these bills forward.

According to the legislative gatekeepers, Rep. Anthony Sabatini — who submitted the House constitutional carry bill — failed because he never got a companion bill submitted in the Senate. They say he didn’t kiss the right asses talk to House committee chairs to bring the bill up for debate and vote.

Florida’s GOP leadership is never at a loss for excuses as to why permitless carry for Floridians isn’t possible…year after year after year.

What excuse will they use next? That blocking the replacement of the Mocking Bird as the State Bird again is more important? This year, it was designating strawberry shortcake as the official state dessert (never mind the fact that the official state pie is already Key Lime).

As Gun Owners of America’s Florida State Director, I leave you with this message.

Contact Governor Ron DeSantis and demand a Special Session be called for Constitutional Carry.

His office is (850) 717-9337 and email is [email protected].

Luis Valdes is the Florida Director of Gun Owners of America.

  1. “This year, it was designating strawberry shortcake as the official state dessert”

Which brings in more money in Florida? The strawberry industry or the gun industry? Which lobby spends more money in Florida? Political priorities = $$$.

    • Translation – America’s ‘taint’, the spot between the playground and the toxic waste…

  2. Primary them and try again. Simple statement I know but what else can you do. Colorado won’t have Constitutional carry in my lifetime but I can vote for those that agree.

    • I’m trapped in CA. So I know the uselessness of ‘The Vote’. I applaud you for your faith in the ‘the rule of law’ and ‘the power of the vote’.

I gave up on that dream so many decades ago I can’t even remember when I actually believed that anything could change by voting.

Still, I do admire your faith in it.

      • I moved out of California in 2015 after living there since 1974. I know exactly how you feel, exactly! Colorado is a shall issue state and I’ve been able to purchase pretty much any type of firearm that I want here. Hopefully we don’t take a hard left turn before I meet my maker. I open carry and conceal carry here and my neighbors who used to do double takes are now comfortable with me. They know my politics and they know that they can count on me as a neighbor as I can count on them. I loved California and watched it go from truly the golden state to what it is now. One party rule is devastating and has shown how harmful it can actually be.

  3. Now that Ohio just became the 23rd State, with a couple more working on potential legislation, Florida’s RINOs are going to have a harder time justifying their anti-CC stance to their voters.

  4. Now you’re talking, Luis.

CALL THE GOVERNOR. Do NOT email. Emails are useless, they can be discarded as easily as petitions. Phone calls can’t be ignored, they must be answered.

Call the governor and put him on the spot. No place to hide if you call him out.

If he does call a special session, all the BS stops. There’s no place to hide. No legislative tricks, no “there’s no companion bill” excuses.

CALL. And get every Floridian you know to call.

    • I called the Governor. Left them my name, and my state of residence which isn’t Florida. Let them know that I was no longer considering retirement in Florida, buying a home there and bringing my not insubstantial retirement accounts, those of my spouse and our well deserved and generous pensions. We are now looking at other Constitutional Carry states. And discussing our change in plans with friends and family near retirement also.

  5. Rather, the entire state should be called ‘Disney World’. Why? Because a lot of make-believe is created and sold within the borders by lawmakers.

I agree that we should call the entire state Disney World, although for a different reason: because Disney generates and controls countless billions of dollars in the Florida economy.

Remember the adage, “He who has the gold makes the rules.”

  6. Here in SC we are in the same boat as FL. Sure a Open Carry law was passed IF you have a cwp. I have yet to see anyone open carry, heck even the local radio hosts remarked yesterday afternoon they had not seen anyone.

Constitutional Carry? I’m not holding my breath. Kinda odd that we have so called 2A supporters in the State and can’t get it passed.

    • “I have yet to see anyone open carry, heck even the local radio hosts remarked yesterday afternoon they had not seen anyone.”

      Do a ‘Wally-Walk’, Manse…

  7. Just watching from a neighboring state, I didn’t expect anything in the way of CC in Florida to get to the statehouse floor. And was not disappointed. Take a look at who is for what, and who is from what committees. Leftist’s and RINO’s.

  8. Attention Conservatives : RINO’s are NOT YOUR FRIENDS.
You are better off with a democrat than a RINO.
    Choose your candidates carefully.

  9. I’d be shocked by the failure of the Republican Party if it weren’t the norm.

If the Democrats were’t in fact, simply criminals disguised as politicians, The repubs would have been dumped decades ago.

  10. I said it a couple of years back. We’ll have nationwide constitutional carry by the end of Trumps second term.

  11. Florida will eventually get Constitutional Carry. We went through this before we pushed “shall issue” through. A novel concept at the time. Meanwhile, we cheer on our cousins in Alabama and even give a salute to them Damn Yankees in Ohio.

    • Ohio salutes you back. Godspeed and good luck.

I hope Indiana and Pennsylvania make it too in the near future.

  12. The voters are not going to punish them, because the voters are with them.

Think I’m wrong? Then prove it in November.

  13. While I am all in favor of trying to use your vote effectively, to vote for those who best represent your interests, we all need to be realistic. With America’s current political class, they have only ONE priority – re-election. Anyone who believes that an elected “Republican” is better than an elected “Democrat” is missing the big picture. ALL politicians are whores; the difference is a streetwalker actually delivers what they are paid for. When was the last time a politician – ANY politican – actually kept a promise??

Remember? Senile Joe was going to end COVID, boost our economy, create jobs, improve our “standing” in the world, confront China and Russia, pass “Build Back Bolshevik”, lower gas prices, AND control inflation. How’s that workin’ out for us, anyway??

Put not thy faith in politicians.

As far as “Constitutional carry” goes . . . I’ll decide for myself what my rights are, thank you very much.

    • Why would the GOP in Florida do ANYTHING for you when it knows that nothing will stop you from voting for them?

  14. Get rid of RINOS and Florida would get ‘Constitutional Carry’ and a lot more pro-American legislation passed.
