FN’s New Multi-Role 509 Midsize Tactical Pistol

I had a chance to shoot FN’s 509 Midsize Tactical pistol at an event back in March. The new midsize version completes a tactical trio along with FN’s full-size 509 Tactical and the 509 Compact Tactical pistols. A number of us shot the hell out of the new gun which may be the ideal combination of size, performance and features for most people.

The 509 Midsize Tactical is in that Goldilocks size range where it’s a great choice for  concealed carry, home defense or duty roles.

The Midsize Tactical frame features a 15-round standard magazine with an option to run the included 24-round FN 509 magazines, providing increased capacity while the 4.5-inch threaded barrel is cold hammer-forged and suppressor-ready with 1/2×28-inch thread pitch, all housed within a 4-inch slide. The slide is cut for FN’s patented Low-Profile Optics-Mounting System™, compatible with more than ten miniature red dot optics. Three-dot Trijicon green Tritium night sights are suppressor-height to co-witness with any compatible optic.

Available in both matte black and FN-signature flat dark earth (FDE), the FN 509 Midsize Tactical will be on display at the company’s booth (#2923) at the 151st NRA Annual Meeting in Houston, Texas, from May 27 through May 29, 2022.     • That’s because they don’t make as many and local gun dealers HEAVILY push S&W’s M’n’Pee line as well as Glock Perfection, cause cops love glocks so it must be great. I know plenty of gun enthusiasts who appreciate HK, FN, Sig. Nothing wrong with people who get hustled to take home Rugers S&Ws and Glocks. You need to get out more and meet more people

      • If you believe the hype or that “it must be true because I read it on the Internet”, you buy a glock.

        For everyone else they find “perfection” without the glock fan boi’s, who need to hijack any article(as they did here) that doesn’t reinforce their insecure ego, when they realize they purchased a deeply flawed pistol.

    • This FN, which I have no doubt is a decent gun, costs nearly double what my decent g19 costs. Is it twice the gun?

      • No you are half the man(being generous), or a glock-boi.

        Which is the same thing.

        Either way not bright, comparing MSRP vs. street price.

        • I only own the one Glock. It is what it is. A duty gun that goes bang every time I pull the trigger. I see no need to hate on something that works.

          I am debt free. House is paid for. Cars were bought with cash. I have maybe a hundred bucks on my credit card. I have outstanding credit and money in the bank. I got that way by watching my pennies.

          I do not tell anyone what to buy. I just tell my reasons for buying what I buy.

      • Comparing apples to apples, Glock 19 msrp is $699. Fn 509 midsize (most comparable barrel length and mag capacity to a Glock 19) msrp is $719. For the extra $20 you get ambidextrous mag release & slide release. If you want the manual safety (not an option on a Glock as far as I can tell) that would be ambidextrous also. Not sure about differences in stock sights…

        If you want to upgrade the Glock 19 with threaded barrel, slide cut for optics and suppressor-height sights to match the 509 midsize tactical, I bet you would be in a comparable price range but it wouldn’t be fully ambidextrous.

        Seems like all the quality manufacturers price their stuff pretty comparably.

  2. Need or want? Most modern handguns meet most peoples needs. I want and will pay a premium for durable goods that are objectively better, even though it is a diminishing return. Guns tend to hold their value over decades.

  3. Can we just be honest here and say no one needs a 9mm? It’s far too powerful for hunting or self defense and could blow your entire lung out of your chest cavity. The second amendment isn’t absolute, you couldn’t ever own a cannon. You totally can’t just go online and order one shipped to your door with no 4473 in 2022. C’mon man, put on the record player and pay attention.

    No, instead of a weapon of war 9mm soon to be banned you need something quality you can pass down for generations to come. Something like a Jiminez JA-25 in .25 ACP.

    • I can’t have a cannon? Well I can’t have a Blackhawk helicopter either. But I read somewhere that one can have a tank if one has the money and a place to park it. I want a tank. I can drive my self defense gun everywhere and if the neighbors complain I’ll run their damn house over and biden and gifford and that dumb ass in Canada can pound a pile of sand and I’ll run that over too and I will officially win the caliber wars and everybody can just bite me.
