Dear Mr. Farago:

I work for the NPR program On Point with Tom Ashbrook and I’m writing to ask if any of thetruthaboutguns.com‘s contributors would be able to speak as a guest on Monday, January 17. We’re looking for a gun owner and 2nd Amendment supporter who is not opposed to the forthcoming McCarthy bill re: magazine capacity. While I realize that this doesn’t describe you personally, I’d be very grateful if you could put me in touch with a contributor or any other gun owner who would not oppose this bill.   2. I wrote back that it’s like trying to find a die-hard vegetarian who raises cows for slaughter.

  3. Translation:  They want a gun control advocate who masquerades as a “moderate gun owner.” 

  4. Sounds like they are looking for some back door spin on how this is a part of their “reasonable” legislation-slash-controls”.
    Cynicism aside, I could be wrong…

  7. In searching for a token ‘reasonable’ gun owner, NPR’s absurdly obvious bias against guns becomes even more absurdly obvious. NPR’s version of the ideal gun owner (if they actually exist, which they don’t) would be someone who only wants to own guns ‘a little.’

    Maybe a farmer who only wants a single-shot .22 rifle to shoot at the raccoons who raid his henhouse. Maybe a suburbanite who thinks it might be nice to buy his sons an air rifle. Maybe an urban hipster who wouldn’t mind renting a (single-stack) 9mm at an indoor shooting range someday.

    As Ralph noted, they should turn their question around and interview a gun-control advocate who believes that magazine capacity is irrelevant, that all law-abiding citizens should be permitted to carry concealed firearms if they pass a safety class and a background check, and that dealers and manufacturers should be permitted to ship firearms directly to law-abiding customers who have passed the Instant Background Check?

    But they won’t because such a beast, like a Bandersnatch or Chimera, simply doesn’t exist. To gun-control advoctates, ‘Reasonable’ gun control emphatically does NOT mean “research-driven firearms legislation written with the goal of reducing crime while maximally preserving civil liberties.” Instead, it always means “new gun laws, just a little bit more restrictive than all the gun laws we already have.” It’s a seatbelt (or straightjacket) that just gets tighter and tighter until there’s no room to move, breathe, or escape.

    Given this inadvertent insight into NPR’s mindset, I am more proud than ever that I do not support them with my donations, despite their constant begging.

  9. Where I work we call NPR “commie radio” and that’s being kind. If they’re looking for sheep they should be contacting their local slaughter house.

    And don’t believe they only get money from donations and whatever else. There have been some articles breaking the money all down, and there’s a lot of tax money in there.

  12. Really? This is objective journalism? How about they interview someone who is opposed to the ban like 99% of all gun owners.

Actually NPR’s absurdly obvious ‘reasonable’ gun owner exists here in California (and the West Coast – the so-called Blue Steel Dems) and among some of my former College buddies — the wealthy scions of elite Democrat gun-owners who listen smugly to NPR and hate (hate! hate!) Sarah Palin, and who don’t want the poor, miserable, “urban” (code word they invented) rabble to be armed with even a “Saturday night special” – especially not with anything having a larger magazine than what they already have…

    First off, they were seeking a “progressive gun owner” because they already had an “against voice” please listen to the actual story and you will agree.

    It was “defunded” under Gingrich with the first contract with america.

    Those “articles” look at university donations as “government funding”. I have been a university department chair. To call our money “government money” is quite an overstatement.

  17. Actually, reasonable gun laws and gun ownership are not a contradiction. I keep a 45 under my bed. I have a number of 9’s. Several pump shotguns (my favorite holds 8 shots and is all black; would freak most liberals out nicely). A few rifles, including a tube fed lever action, which I believe is more of an assault rifle than any semi-auto with a magazine because with a tube feed and a little moderation, you’re never out of rounds and you can go almost as fast as if you aim reasonably with the semi-auto. But I still think gun control is necessary in the modern world. Nut jobs can do so much damage so fast that doing things like limiting their magazine capacities is necessary. If that means I can’t have them either, or it means I must jump through a few legal hoops and pay a few processing fees (like the $200 FFL to own autos), so be it.
