The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the firearm industry trade association, is applauding progress made by licensed firearm retailers and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to significantly reduce firearm thefts.
Data released by ATF demonstrably shows that firearm industry partner programs to reduce thefts and robberies of firearm retailers are dropping by 61 percent and the numbers of stolen firearms decreasing 74 percent in the first half of 2021 compared to the same time last year. The joint ATF-NSSF Operation Secure Store (OSS) is directly responsible for the tremendous progress made to ensure firearms aren’t stolen from firearm retailers. Operation Secure Store is one program of the firearm industry’s Real Solutions. Safer Communities. campaign.
“This data shows that the firearm industry’s proactive partnerships with the ATF is yielding the results that make our communities safer,” said Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel. “This is what effective firearm safety looks like. Cooperative partnerships to assist retailers to improve security and deter criminal activity are effective and the figures released by the ATF shows this effort is working. NSSF remains committed to education and awareness among retailers so they can make well-informed security-related decisions to deter and prevent thefts.”
Data released by the ATF reported that in the first six months of this year, 111 burglaries were recorded and 959 firearms were stolen. The same time period in 2020 saw 284 firearm retailers targeted for burglaries with 3,703 firearms stolen. Both NSSF and the ATF credit this improvement to the cooperative partnership between law enforcement, industry and firearm retailers to educational programming, including an ongoing series of regional seminars hosted by ATF.
The OSS program focuses on five areas: “Education and Awareness,” “Assessment and Risk Analysis,” “Planning and Strategy,” “Engagement” and “Response.” This approach addresses many of the most common security concerns FFLs have, with a focus on providing a wide array of solutions that mitigate risk and protect these businesses.
The ATF has a 100 percent response rate to burglaries and robberies of firearm retailers and uses the combined expertise of its special agents and industry operations investigators to apprehend those responsible and recover the stolen firearms. NSSF matches reward offers for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the crimes.

My local gun store owner (medium size store) tells me that significant # of stores being burglarized where the only thing stolen are the files of 4473.
1.) Identity thieves?

that would be doing it the hard way, would be much easier just to get a law passed mandating transferring 4473’s to a “secure” facility. no, sounds like “atf” or whoever has an interest in a few specific individuals and whatever they might have.

There’s been a rash of burglary & attempted theft in NW Indiana & NW ILL. Only one gun shop has what I would call a “fortress”-South County guns. There was an attempt that failed badly. Chuck’s in Riverdale is in the ghetto but as far as I know has never been jacked. Others more than once with the murder of the owner& theft at Glenwood guns in circa 1999 being the worst. No place is foolproof as thieves bash through walls with stolen vehicles.
About a year ago (7/28/2020) Rinks in unincorporated Lockport was robbed.
The problem there was even though they are building the area up,
Rinks is pretty close to the newish I-355 extension which runs from the I-55 to I-80.
For years they had just burglary bars over the windows but they cleared the cabinets.
The rifles were in racks with a cable lock near the front of the store.
Last year they changed that and left the handguns in the display cases.
Before that they would lock them all up. A cinder block for the window and
a pair of bolt cutters for the locks and the burglars got away with:
Four ARs and two handguns. The whole thing took two minutes.

So NSSF is willing to suck off the BATF, but won’t work with state LE – or better yet, Sheriffs?
This level of fuddery is why our 2A Rights are in danger. BATF is unconstitutional and just a gang of Jack Booted Thugs (JBT’s)! No one should legitimize them by partnering with them.

Meh…kinda looks like 1H2021 returned to more typical levels of 1H2019.
In other words 1H2020 was an atypical year like it was in nearly every stat for 2020.
I really believe the only reason the theft was down by June is there were no guns on any shelf by then to steal. All the stores in North Texas were bare and were sold before they arrived at the gun store. Maybe a Cricket .22 or a single shot .410 were hanging on the shelf, but the crooks had nothing to steal.
Statistically 3 years is meaningless. No way to know if this is within standard variation or not. Show me 12 years of data.

For ease of discussion, let us round up the number of stolen firearms to 1,000–and then we will multiply that times two to arrive at the projected number of stolen firearms (from federally licensed firearm dealers) in 2021 in the entire United States. A nation of 330 million people. That works out to one stolen firearm (from federally licensed firearm dealers) for every 165,000 people.
Why is this a huge deal and a huge resource drain? I have to believe that there are far better ways to apply those resources.
I believe the only reason the theft had decreased by June was because there were no guns on any shelves to take.
