These are among the patches on the assault pack of Specialist Garrett A. Gebhart, a designated marksman in 3rd Platoon, B Company of the 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment. The battalion is one of the 101st Airborne Division’s so-called “surge battalions” in Afghanistan, and is now completing a one-year tour in Paktika and Ghazni Provinces.

  1. Trevor Paglen has a cool book called, “I Could Tell You But Then You Would Have to be Destroyed by Me” It’s all about patches supposedly worn by members of highly classified units and projects.

  2. I guess shooting the Taliban doesn’t qualify as one of the “traditional sports of hunting, trap and skeet target shooting.”

  3. That patch is awesome. The Danger Room section of Wired has a collection of extremely funny military patches. My personal favorite is the “Death Wears Bunny Slippers” patch for the nuclear silo crews. The name comes from the fact that they may have to start nuclear war wearing bunny slippers.

  4. “Death Wears Bunny Slippers” worn by nuclear missileers seems much more creative and a tad ironic.

    • Missileers must be a humorous bunch. Before it was decommissioned, there was a door to a MCC (missile control center) that was painted to look like a Domino’s Pizza box, topped with the words “Worldwide Delivery in 30 minutes or less, or your next one is Free.”

      • The Domino’s thing is definately amusing.

Based on writing of missileers that I’ve read, the combination of awesome responsibility combined with a whole lotta free time to contemplate said responsibility (predictably) yields loads of twisted humor.

  5. This is incendiary because we are not trying to kill the taliban and being in Afghanistan doesn’t suck?

    • I think it’s incendiary because of the bold statement that it makes; specifically that our Brave Men and Women© are not Fighting Them Over There Before We Have To Fight Them Here® because the freedom fighters insurgents enemy combatants Terrorists Hate Our FREEDOM™ – but rather that they are actually bloodthirsty, homicidal maniacs, who clearly take pleasure in the murder, rape, and torture of other human beings, and are content in serving a dying empires wish to indefinitely occupy a foreign land that has never (or ever even been able to) attacked us militarily, diplomatically, politically, or otherwise.

      Or something like that.
