A fatal shooting incident in East Texas resulted in the death of a Longview, Texas, man, with authorities stating the shooter acted in self-defense, the Longview News-Journal is reporting.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office reported that the shooting occurred around 6:45 p.m. Sunday in a rural area between Bullard and Jacksonville. Responding to a 911 call about the incident, deputies found a man dead from gunshot wounds.

Sheriff Brent Dickson said in a statement that initially, two Bullard residents, Stephen Driskel, 54, and Sue Peeler, 64, were detained for questioning regarding the incident. They were later released after the investigation supported Driskel’s claim that he shot the Longview resident in self-defense.

Under Texas Penal Code 9.31, the use of force against another is justified if it is believed necessary to protect oneself from another’s use or attempted use of unlawful force.

The identity of the deceased has not been released, and further details of the confrontation have not been disclosed by the authorities.

“This case is still under review and will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office to be presented to the Grand Jury,” Dickson added.

No further information has been made available at this time and details remain sketchy.

  1. Slow news day? Given that this happened almost 2 years ago, do we know any more about this story than we did then?

  2. That’s two minutes of my life I won’t get back. Should have just kept reading my book.

  3. According to the linked article itself the deceased has been identified.

“The man was identified as Tommy Peeler, 69, of Longview.”

He’s distinct from the two people taken into custody, “Stephen Driskel, 54, and Sue Peeler, 64” who were released after questioning.

“Driskel shot Peeler in self-defense, according to [Sheriff] Dickson.”

The editor of the Longview News-Journal apparently missed the need to swap the order of paragraphs #2 and #3 for general sense-making and, just as a basic courtesy to readers everywhere, could probably use a refresher course on grade school writing skills.

As an aside, I didn’t know there was a place in Texas called “Longview”. That’s the sort of factoid that, without context, might have caused me to believe Billy Joe Armstrong to be a bigger asshole than he actually is.

    • RE: “As an aside, I didn’t know there was a place in Texas called “Longview”.

Been there nice city, ways east from Dallas off I-20.

  4. My guess would be Mr. Peeler caught his wife with a much younger man and expressed his displeasure, at which time the male adulterer terminated hubby, thereby solving the love triangle conundrum.

In biblical days, the adulterers would’ve been put to death, these days it’s the aggrieved husband.

    • That’s just what it was, a guess. And not an educated one. It could have been anything. One thing I learned was to never walk into a homicide investigation with a preconceived notion.

    • There’s certainly plenty more to this story. It would be newsworthy to know if/how they were related. It’s especially lame to report on this vague story two years after the fact with no new information. There’s no lesson to be learned if we don’t know what happened. Do better TTAG.

    • Yea, the dude who got shot was 69, the shooter was 54. Can you do the math on this with your Common Core skills and let us know how much younger the man was?

    • MINOR49er, Isn’t it time for you to get your mind out of the gutter?
      Not everyone is like you.

  5. I did a search for “Longview, TX Peeler Homicide”. No immediately available updates. Longview is halfway between Dallas and Louisiana. Not a calm peaceful place. Many news stories of unpleasant things.

    • “If those four cases are included in Harris’ “not secured” count, the percentage is closer to 64%.“

So the VP said 75%, researchers say the number is closer to 64%.

      Cue the outrage:

“VP Harris FACT – CHECKED Over Gun Violence propaganda lie”

Meanwhile, not a peep for Donald Trump‘s false claims:

“Trump Claims U.S. Crime Is ‘Only’ Going Up, Despite Steep Drop in Violence During Biden Presidency

Trump has tried blaming his successor for letting crime run rampant. In reality, murder rates rose a record level during Trump’s final year in office, and — along with overall crime rates — fell sharply in 2023
By Kyler Alvord Published on April 4, 2024 10:29AM EDT”

In March the FBI reported preliminary statistics from 2023, which show a 6% drop in violent crime compared to 2022, and a 13% drop in murder. Reported crimes decreased in nearly every category, with only motor vehicle theft seeing an uptick.

Data expert Jeff Asher, who reported on the FBI’s preliminary findings, noted that although the final 2023 crime statistics will not be posted until October, a 13% decrease in murder would be “by far” the sharpest decline recorded in the six decades of statistics available. Previously, the sharpest murder decline was 9% in 1996.“

      • In all due respect I’d only been out of the nut house for two years. It takes awhile to get my sht gathered back up.
Notice the murder rate rising in 1998, your welcome.

        • And, I also posted previously > https://dev.thetruthaboutguns.com/when-sorry-doesnt-cut-it-mom-says-her-stabby-12-year-old-son-is-just-a-boy/#comment-7073683 (read the thread for details, but for 2023)

“Violent criminal stabbing/slashing attacks with knives against victims happen (at current levels) ~ 2,900 times daily across the United States.

Violent criminal attacks with hand-feet/blunt objects against victims happen (at current levels) ~ 4,200 times daily across the United States.

Violent criminal attacks using any non-firearm ‘weapon’ (including hand/feet) for purposes of ‘sexual assault’ (either with or without rape) against victims (at current levels) is ~5,600 times daily across the United States.

Violent criminal ‘trans-on-trans’ or ‘trans-on-gay’ or ‘trans-on-straight’ (collectively) attacks using any non-firearm ‘weapon’ (including hand/feet) for any purpose (including ‘sexual assault’ either with or without rape) against victims (at current levels) is ~4,700 times daily across the United States.

          Clarification for :

‘Violent criminal stabbing/slashing attacks with knives against victims happen (at current levels) ~ 2,900 times daily across the United States.

Violent criminal attacks with hand-feet/blunt objects against victims happen (at current levels) ~ 4,200 times daily across the United States.’

These are not for purposes of ‘sexual assault’. They are things such as, for example, robbery or domestic abuse assault or other assaults or home invasion or attacks on students or school staff in schools.

Criminal medical malpractice inflicting (collectively) serious injury or death upon victims (at current rates) happens ~1,100 times daily across the United States.”

      • “In March the FBI reported preliminary statistics from 2023, which show a 6% drop in violent crime compared to 2022”

Not very reliable, and extremely misleading and deceptive as presented.

Learn what context means Miner49er. Crime did indeed go up, and is still going up. They just aren’t counting all all it because most does not result in arrests AND prosecution – and that’s whats in FBI stats, the arrest AND prosecution in the areas reporting and not all crime. In other words the FBI stats are showing a decrease is arrest AND prosecution because most are not arrested AND prosecuted under left wing policies AND not all states and departments are reporting.

        And…

How reliable are the FBI’s Report of Violent Crime Data? There are some major problems > https://crimeresearch.org/2024/04/how-reliable-are-the-fbis-report-of-violent-crime-data-there-are-some-major-problems/

        And…

The Collapse in Law Enforcement: As Arrest Rates Plummet, People Have Been Less Willing to Report Crime > https://crimeresearch.org/2024/04/the-collapse-in-law-enforcement-as-arrest-rates-plummet-people-have-been-less-willing-to-report-crime/

“While the violent crime rate reported to police fell by 1.7% between 2021 and 2022, the National Crime Victimization Survey shows that total violent crime (reported and non-reported) rose from 16.5 to 23.5 per 100,000 (Links to the NCVS are available at the bottom of this page). Violent crime in 2022 was above the rate the last year before the pandemic in 2019 and above the average for the five years from 2015 to 2019.

This divergence arises for several reasons. In 2021, 37% of police departments stopped reporting crime data to the FBI (including large departments for Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York), and others are underreporting crimes. But also because of the dramatic decline in arrest rates.”

      • (and while waiting for my comment to come out of moderation i’ll say this) and now you know why “not a peep for Donald Trump‘s false claims” because it wasn’t false, but your claim Miner49er and your link is.

      • MINOR49er, Again you are spreading your anti-Trump Propaganda. The fact is that while Trump was President, crime was down until after your RED CHINESE ALLIES introduced COVID-19 to the world.
