Magpul just announced via Facebook that they are now producing and shipping 30-round magazines for the AK-47 platform in 7.62×39. This is their first announced magazine for a new weapons platform since they introduced the 7.62 NATO PMAG for the AR-10 weapon system, and the first non-AR magazine they’ve made (well, besides that G36 PMAG bastardization). We’ll get our hands on some at the NRA annual meeting and report back ASAP . . .

The Magpul PMAG 30 AK MOE is a 30 round, durable, lightweight, high reliability polymer magazine for 7.62×39 Kalashnikov pattern firearms.

This will be the first installment of the Magpul AK magazine line. The AK MOE will be an all-polymer design, utilizing the same advanced materials and manufacturing processes as the rest of the PMAG line to achieve surprising durability. It features a removable floorplate, constant curve geometry, and high-reliability/low-friction follower for the performance you expect from a PMAG.

Due to the interface of rifle and magazine in the Kalashnikov platforms, and the leverage that critical points must withstand, we knew we couldn’t leave well-enough alone with the AK MOE before we even started designing. Also currently in development, and arriving on the heels of the AK MOE, is the next release in the PMAG AK lineup, which will be a 7.62×39 magazine with a little more “Bulgarian” in it, featuring solid steel reinforcements at lockup points.

    • They’re late to the party with a me-too design (Tapco) and in a caliber that has no shortage of mags. If they really want to “innovate”, they should come to market with a 5.45×39 mag with steel re-inforcement at the lugs. Until US Palm makes a 5.45×39 mag (assuming they will with the same quality as their AK30 mag), there’s quite an open market for anyone to deliver an AK74 mag. Tapco mags are OK, and ProMags are the typical crap we’ve come to expect from them. The AK30 mags prove Americans are willing to spend upwards of $30 for a quality U.S. made mag.

      • Maybe you haven’t been paying attention to the availability of 5.45×39 ammo and 74 variants. It’s a shrinking market.

        • AK74’s aren’t a shrinking market. They are not as big a market as AK47. If that confuses you, I can’t help. There are roughly 18 kajillion AK47 metal mags and some quality polymer mags currently already on shore and double that number elsewhere. For the limited market AK74 is, there’s a high demand for mags. Check out the following thread at AKFiles, in the AK47 forum, no less:

      • I am pretty sure they will come out with a 5.45×39 mag after they get these out there. That is the one thing that is stoping me from getting a 74 it is so tough to find quality mags.

  2. It’s a bummer that I’m trapped behind the lines in Colorado. Nevertheless, I’m curious to know how they compare to TAPCO and US Palm.

    • This is what I am thinking. I don’t get it. Unless there will be a budget version and an expensive one.

  15. I’m sure they will be perpetually sold out and unable to be backordered like AR PMAGS unfortunately. They do look great and I hope I can get some in the future to compare to my Bulgarian Tapco and U.S. Palm mags.

  16. Does Magpul makes these in their new factory outside of Colorado? I thought they were leaving Colorado. Guess not.

    • They are, but it’s in phases. Still need to pay the bills.

      Plus it’s still snowing here. . .

      • I’ll believe that they’re leaving when they leave. Until then, I’m suspicious. Okay, to be honest, I think they’re FOS.

        • If you check their Facebook replies, they are already making PMAGs outside of state.

  17. Why even bother with these? They’re no better than Tapco – all polymer, no reinforcement.

    Magpul totally flubbed it.

    • Do you even have any experience with Pmags?

      they are considered one of the most robust magazines for AR’s. I’m sure they will do a good job with AK mags

      • I don’t need experience with Pmags – military capable AK mags have to have metal reinforcement or the polymer tabs and feedlips will break. It’s a different system than the AR15 magwell.

        • And they will be offering a version that does just that. Or did you not read the article above?

        • I agree but perhaps it is a little early to draw to conclusions because there IS a difference between magpuls polymers and those used by tapco.

          and isn’t magpul introducing a variant later with steel reinforced points?

  18. The first non AR magazine Magpul produced was actually for the HK G36 series of rifles, not the new AK magazine. Still good news though.

  21. No 5.45mm MAGS im outraged bad bad Magpul! Most tactical and reliable AKs are 5.45mm calibers, shame no Pmags for AK-74s yet.

    • Depends in how you build it. I have an AKM style in 7.62×39 that will run every other gun I know into the ground. That includes both DI and Piston ARs, SIG-556, and other AKs. I have nearly five thousand rounds through it with several different magazines and mimimal cleaning. Not one issue post build.

  23. While I mean absoloutley no offense to AK owners and someday would like to be one but wouldnt it be better for magpul to focus on their current backorder before introducing another product? Not trying to pick a fight or start an argument I just dont see how this is a good time for them to do this.

    • Plenty of AK owners might respectfully digress 🙂

      Even though on the surface it might seem an odd time to do it I’m sure Magpul has had this introduction in the works long before the bullcrap started in Colorado and they might as well use the machinery and sell them to help pay for the tooling.

      Oh, and shooter to shooter – jump at an AK. Mine has been one of the funnest (don’t know if that’s a word) rifles I’ve ever shot. WASR’s are hit or miss but if you find a MAK-90 go for it.

    • AR mags are coming back in stock in most places. They’ve had hundreds of Pmags in my LGS for more than a month now. Even online shops like Aimsurplus will get them in occasionally. I don’t see why they can’t switch their focus with other products.

      For one, I’ll definitely will be looking forward to buying one of their new mags for my AK.

  27. Given the excellent quality of the US Palm mags, I wish they would look at a 20-rd mag for the FAL platform instead. Thousands of them in citizen’s hands, and they are halfway there already with the AR .308 platform mags.

    Still, glad to see them join the party. The more, the merrier.

  28. Magpul has just now decided to start producing AK magazines? What rock have then been hiding under?

    Have they been waiting for Obama to tell them to start making AK mags all this time?

  29. I hope this will eventually extends to 5.56 AK mags. Right now there’s a single magazine make for these that’s both good and reliable, and that’s Bulgarian polymer mags that are specifically made for that caliber (and not “converted” 5.45 mags). They are not super-expensive, but they aren’t cheap, either, and can be hard to find at times.

  30. Magpul has a opportunity to jump on a boat that other manufacturers have outright failed to exploit.

    Producing a QUALITY US-made magazine for

    1.) the AKM
    2.) AK74
    3.) 223/5.56 AKs
    4.) Mini 14
    5.) SCAR H
    6.) Saiga/Molot Shotguns
    7.) finally…the M1A/M14 (yes i went there)

    make it happen magpul. The sky is the limit for you.

  33. These look pretty cool. Sadly I won’t be buying any though as I bought 40 of the Bulgarian mags back in the 90s from some guy for $8 bucks apiece and don’t have room for any of these.

  36. The Magpul AK PMAG has been a big hit in the AK world of polymer magazines. We sell a ton of these and so far have not had any complaints with them. My personal opinion is while I think they are great for everyday range use, I would like to see Magpul add some type of metal reinforcement to the locking tab. http://www.shootersplus.com
