Federal introduced the 224 Valkyrie round earlier this month and one of the caliber’s biggest selling points is that it turns an AR platform rifle into a long range-capable machine with about half the recoil of 6.5 Creedmoor with similar stability and more energy retention. Staying supersonic out to 1300 yards, the new round lets you reach out and (accurately) touch things at distances you previously needed something like 6.5 Creedmoor or 26 Nosler for. And you can do it from a 16-inch barrel.
MasterPiece Arms is fully on board with 224 Valkyrie and has just announced their new MPA 224BA precision chassis rifle designed to let you take full advantage of everything the new cartridge can do. Here’s their press release:
Comer, Ga. (October 2017) – MasterPiece Arms (MPA), manufacturers of the MPA BA Rifles and Chassis Systems, is pleased to introduce the MPA 224BA Bolt Action Rifle. Built specifically to use with the newly released 224 Valkyrie caliber, the MPA 224BA Bolt Action Rifle is ideal for competitive shooters looking to make longer range shots and hunters interested in varmints and medium game with a 1/2″ MOA accuracy guarantee.
The chassis is machined on MPA’s CNC Horizontal Machining Centers to exacting tolerances from 6061 aluminum. MPA’s unique pocketing system reduces weight and increases the structural integrity of the chassis. The chassis also includes a built-in bubble level, thumb notch, night vision bridge and lower mounted Picatinny rail. The new MPA Enhanced Vertical Grip is also included. It is also compatible with a user locatable barricade stop system, which requires the purchase of an optional MPA BA Rotating Barricade Stop.
The MPA 224BA Bolt Action Rifle includes a precision gun drilled, reamed and honed Spencer / MPA rifle barrel made from 416RQ stainless steel. The hand lapped barrel is bore and land inspected on a video borescope. The chamber is indicated within 0.0001″ or less to the bore of the rifle.
The MPA produced buttstock features an adjustable length of pull, adjustable cheek riser and bag rider. The length of pull and cheek position are locked in place via a set of screws that are embedded into the buttstock body. It provides a very strong lockup of the cheek riser plate and recoil plate assembly.

For those who don’t shoot PRS, the ability to recover in time to see where your shots land is a CRITICAL part of making hits.
The less recoil, the short distances you’ll be able to see your hits. With a 308 gas gun I can’t see my hits until past 800yds. With a 6mm Creedmoor bolt gun I can see them at 500.
This rig would probably let you see them at 300yds… and if you’re missing targets closer than that a new gun isn’t going to help you.
What are the two veggies that will destroy belly fat? As an OFWG, I wanna know.
Unfortunately, hops isn’t one of them. I’ve conducted extensive research.

Cartridge’s claim to fame is that it extends the range for an AR platform, so they offer it in a pricy bolt-action. Am I missing something?

If I push REAL HARD (or use a hammer) on the forward assist, can I get my Wylde barrel to chamber one of these 224’s?, I mean really! It’s only .001 bigger, right?
Not even that much.
The .224 Valyrie is a 6.8 SPC case necked down.
Indeed, a necked down 6.8 with a standard sized rim and slightly recessed shoulder/neck(To accommodate longer bullets with better coefficients and form factors) with minimal body case taper. Very similar to the 22×6.8 wildcat, and arguably everything that the 22 Nosler should have been.

Sadly though, the cartridge has a very uphill battle to catch on. Shame too as the name alone warrants awe and wonder, if for no other reason than the old Nordic stanza: Vid sjá det valkyrja fjúka.

What does that actually mean? That they’ve dialed in the bore to less than 0.0001″ TIR before putting in the chambering reamer?
Really? OK, that’s nice. But unless they’re using a lathe with higher-quality bearings, most lathes (both CNC and manual) have spindle bearings that are rated to 0.0002″ TIR.
Im assuming these are pretty expensive. That and using a 700 action is a big nope.
Just what the word needed — another new caliber.
Next up, the 224 1/2 Medusa. It turns any target into stone, and pulverizes it!

I say it’s high time the industry necked UP some rounds. Jam a .45 into the neck of a 7.62 casing.
Boutique calibers!!! Boutique calibers everywhere!! So yet another hipster round that claims to do a better job than every round that has preceded it, that’s 2 this week. At this point it seems all they’re doing is necking down all the cases to a smaller caliber and pinky swearing that it’s better than the parent cartridge because of less recoil or some other “benefit” while catering to the competition crowd which is really the only area that the “improvements” between these rounds and their parent makes a bit of difference.
This is the first time in a long time that i am really excited about a new round. It really enhances the capabilities of the AR15 platform. Can’t wait for parts to become available.
