Speer new products 2018

I am such a sucker for self-defense ammunition packaging. Maybe that’s because I consider mushrooming ammo pretty much of a muchness. I mean, is brand choice really going to be the difference between life or death? I mean, MY life or death? Well if it is . . .

Gold Dot has a great rep. And the good folks at Speer are offering an almighty 200-grain 10mm round to take down, um, anything on two legs? And a lot on four.

As for the rifle bullets, what an awesome retro package!  Those bad boys come in 6.5mm, .243 Winchester and .257 Weatherby Magnum.

With a bit of luck our resident war her and reloader JonWayne Taylor will opine on these calibers in the comments below. After a word from our potential ammo sponsor.

ANOKA, Minnesota  – Speer will launch five new products within several lines during the 2018 SHOT Show (Booth No. 14551), January 23-26 at the Sands Expo Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Highlights include the new Speer Handloading Manual No. 15 and Gold Dot 200-grain 10mm Auto. Gold Dot ammunition’s reliability has made it the No. 1 choice for law enforcement, and the powerful 10mm Auto load offers the same performance for self-defense.

Additionally, the new edition of the Speer Handloading Manual features updated recipes with the latest propellants for more than 120 legacy cartridges, as well as data for 13 new cartridges, including 204 Ruger, 6.5 Creedmoor and 300 Blackout.

“Shooters will appreciate the many new options available for them in 2018,” said Brian Anderson, Senior Marketing Manager for Speer. “Speer’s new products are sure to impress.”

    • With the right powder to get the best velocity bump from a carbine length barrel, I think 10mm would be a darned effective hunting round for close range.

Put a red dot on that Hi-Point, let your friends laugh at you until you bring home the bacon.

  1. I got a Speer reloading manual (I forget which edition) about four years ago, it came with an RCBS kit that included a single stage press, powder drop, scale and sundry other supplies.

It has a lot of good instructions, tips, warnings, cautions, dos and don’ts for the beginning reloader. If you’re just getting into reloading, don’t do it without a reloading manual.

That said, I find the load data listed in Speer’s manual to be somewhat incomplete. You’ll need to go to the web sites of powder manufacturers, or other bullet manufacturers, to round out your choices for recipes.

  2. Any specs on that 10mm? Namely, the big question, how hot is it loaded? Legit 10mm hot? Or “slightly warmed up .40” hot? inquiring minds wants to know.

        • Original Norma stuff was loaded at 1200+ fps with a 200 grain bullet. I think Speer was trying for a sweet spot between ballistics buffs and actual/felt recoil-follow up shots.

Some of their other Gold Dot loadings have been oriented for the Low-Recoil crowd as well.

        • The original Norma load was faster, but the original Norma load far exceeds SAAMI pressure spec. Of course, at the time, there was no SAAMI or CIP pressure spec.

No reputable major manufacturer is going to load ammo above the industry pressure specifications.

  3. The Gold Dot has been available as a limited release at Cabela’s for a while now, I had an opportunity to shoot it from the G 20. Excellent ammo as one would expect, very controllable. Seems to be a medium-hot round, between the typical glorified 40 caliber factory offerings and the hotter specialty loads. Nice to see some folks like Sig, Speer and Federal (VitalShok JSP) offering some “real” 10mm factory product.
