Police continued to hunt Wednesday for the gunman who opened fire on a subway train in Brooklyn, an attack that left 10 people shot and once again interrupted New York City’s long journey to post-pandemic normalcy.

The search focused partly on a man who police say rented a van possibly connected to Tuesday’s violence.

Investigators stressed they weren’t sure whether the man, Frank R. James, was responsible for the shooting. But authorities were examining social media videos in which the 62-year-old decried the United States as a racist place awash in violence and sometimes railed against New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

“This nation was born in violence, it’s kept alive by violence or the threat thereof and it’s going to die a violent death. There’s nothing going to stop that,” James said in one video.

Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell called the posts “concerning” and officials tightened security for Adams, who was already isolating following a positive COVID-19 test Sunday.

Adams said Wednesday that investigators were zeroed in on finding James.

“We are going to continue to close the loop around him and bring him in, and continue the investigation into this horrific act against innocent New Yorkers,” the Democrat said on MSNBC.

The gunman sent off smoke grenades in a crowded subway car and then fired at least 33 shots with a 9 mm handgun, police said. Five gunshot victims were in critical condition but all 10 wounded in the shooting were expected to survive. At least a dozen others who escaped gunshot wounds were treated for smoke inhalation and other injuries.

One passenger, Jordan Javier, thought the first popping sound he heard was a book dropping. Then there was another pop. People started moving toward the front of the car, he said, and he realized there was smoke.

When the train pulled into the 36th Street station in the Sunset Park neighborhood, people ran out and were directed to another train across the platform. Passengers wept and prayed as they rode away from the scene, Javier said.

“I’m just grateful to be alive,” he said.

The shooter fled in the chaos, leaving behind the gun, extended magazines, a hatchet, detonated and undetonated smoke grenades, a black garbage can, a rolling cart, gasoline and the key to a U-Haul van.

That key led investigators to James, who has addresses in Philadelphia and Wisconsin, NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig said. The van was later found, unoccupied, near a station where investigators determined the gunman had entered the subway system, Essig said.

Rambling, profanity-filled YouTube videos apparently posted by James, who is Black, are replete with violent language and bigoted comments, some against other Black people.

In one video, posted a day before the attack, he criticizes crime against Black people and says drastic action is needed.

“You got kids going in here now taking machine guns and mowing down innocent people,” James says. “It’s not going to get better until we make it better,” he said, adding that he thought things would only change if certain people were “stomped, kicked and tortured” out of their “comfort zone.”

Several videos mention New York’s subways.

A Feb. 20 video says the mayor and governor’s plan to address homelessness and safety in the subway system “is doomed for failure” and refers to himself as a “victim” of the city’s mental health programs. A Jan. 25 video criticizes Adams’ plan to end gun violence.

Adams said in a video statement that the city “will not allow New Yorkers to be terrorized, even by a single individual.”

    • “…this is a black face of white supremacists.”

      An obvious Trump supporter.

      *snicker*… 😉

    • Only a college educated white liberal would be dumb enough to believe a word the LAT (or NYT or WP, etc.) says.

  1. But authorities were examining social media videos in which the 62-year-old decried the United States as a racist place awash in violence and sometimes railed against New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

They’re investigating the guy for being one of the millions of people who parrot the woke crowd’s talking points?

Those views, extreme as they sound, are constantly presented in the media as obvious truth.

  2. Frank R. James huh? I’m willing to bet his brother Jesse is involved too……….ROFL

    • Interesting that a black man named after a Confederate guerrilla would rant about racism before committing an act of violence. A lot to unpack there.

  3. Did NY pass a “Don’t Say Black” bill? Fox News was saying they’re looking for a “man” with his name. And even went was far as to say he was “dark skinned”. LOL.

  4. White supremacy is the greatest threat to this nation.
Well, the incessantly reinforced myth of it anyway.

The entirety of the regime essentially immolated Alex Jones over some schizo bringing a shotgun to a pizza parlor. Will the regime come for all the talking heads spouting off about muh white supremacy and “you’re all still slaves” rhetoric? The MSM and half the politicians are essentially Louis Farrakhan and Jeremiah Wright acolytes at this point. Complete with tinges of anti-Semitism.

    • …and we can’t forget the (sometimes) Reverend Senator Raphael Gamaliel Warnock of GA preaching his tainted gospel of the United States as a place where a black man cannot advance.

  5. For BOLO purposes some newscasters identified the perp as Black as they should and some newscasters danced around the perp’s description. Nonetheless the perp’s u-tube rants shows he has the attributes of a disgruntled member of the socialist democRat Party. He’s one of yours Jim Crow Gun Control joe.

  6. Well guess what…On Fox news it was reported this morning that…wait for it…the FBI already knew about this guy….just like ALL the other “mass shooters”. Gee ya reckon the FBI, DOJ and the Biden Admin it orchestrating/facilitating all these shootings…you know seeing as how Biden wants to pass rediculously unconstitutional gun control laws on home made firewarms and semi auto rifles and handguns, along with magazine capacity laws??

    • “the FBI already knew about this guy….just like ALL the other “mass shooters”

Are you suggesting we need strong red flag laws in order to address the mentally unstable people of any political persuasion?

Do you think people who have been adjudicated mentally incapable of handling their own affairs should be allowed to possess and carry weapons?

      • Lol no we don’t even use the ones we have against actual threats why would we want more intrusion.

      • We don’t need red flag laws. We need nationwide constitutional carry so that the potential victims can do more than scream in reply to these monsters.

      • More Red Flag laws!!!! F*** due process and presumption of innocence!!! And to think you once TRIED to claim you’re not a Leftist/fascist!?

Just keep f***ing that chicken, MajorStupidity, just keep f***ing that chicken. Are you auditioning for a part in the remake of “Minority Report”, MajorStupidity????

        • “More Red Flag laws!!!! F*** due process and presumption of innocence!!!“

Lamprey, it’s apparent you’re completely on board with Donald Trump‘s gun control initiatives, will you be voting for him in 2024 so he can abolish due process?

“Or, Mike, take the firearms first and then go to court, because that’s another system. Because a lot of times, by the time you go to court, it takes so long to go to court, to get the due process procedures. I like taking the guns early. Like in this crazy man’s case that just took place in Florida, he had a lot of firearms – they saw everything – to go to court would have taken a long time, so you could do exactly what you’re saying, but take the guns first, go through due process second.”
          Donald J Trump 2018

You Trump supporters are hilarious, pure cognitive dissonance.

        • Lamp the contemptible wife beater’s unintentional comedy tour continues unabated lol. What a dumb loser ‘he’ is 🖕🤡.

        • No, you pathetic dumbass, I’m NOT “all on board” with Trump’s, or anyone else’s, gun control. Nor did I EVER say I was. Don’t know if that “response” was projection, sheer laziness, or your normal stupidity. But thanks for playing, mouthbreather.

        • nameless, brainless, d***less troll!! How ya been?? No, you’re not only not “better than” me, or ANYONE on this forum (even, God forbid, the pathetic moron dacian). You are a witless, drive-by purveyor of grade-school level (at BEST) insults. I’d suggest you try harder, but you’re not capable. Go back to your circle jerk; dacian and MinorIQ are waiting.

      • No to red flag laws. But it should be made legal in all states and jurisdictions, for a third party to come to the armed rescue, of others when they are being attacked. The case of Joe horn in Texas is a perfect example.

        Or these examples.

    • “Gee ya reckon the FBI, DOJ and the Biden Admin it orchestrating/facilitating all these shootings“

During the Parkland school shootings and the El Paso anti-Hispanic shootings, there was no Biden administration.

That American carnage occurred on Donald Trump’s watch, under his FBI and DOJ. Do you suspect them of instigating those events?

        • Any more than it is Biden’s. It is the people behind the puppet masters that set agenda. Keeping the unwashed masses at each others’ throats keep their agenda alive.
Make no mistake – the people in control do not want the public armed.

        • FBI agents should be disarmed. And the legislation that authorized the creation of the FBI and its funding should be repealed. The FBI has become the enemy of our constitutional republic.

      • “During the Parkland school shootings and the El Paso anti-Hispanic shootings, there was no Biden administration.”

True, but it’s undeniable that the FBI, as well as the large metro areas where the vast majority of gang and mass shootings occur are run by woke, leftist administrations…

      • Another theory with some credible truth: The FBI and DOJ allowed the events to occur for political reasons.

  7. The claim of the US being born, founded on, and owing it’s existence to violence is very short sighted.

The US exists because of violence, yes. So does all life. As does the planet earth and all the universe. Violence is why we are here. Humans and life itself is born of it. This is reality and is not even questionable.

Just as sitting in your chair reading this, it’s easy to think your sitting still but the truth is that your moving faster than any bullet ever fired.

These people want to complain to anyone that will listen about ideas of violence then turn around and contribute to it. “Stop Killing Us” they yell as they shoot eachother. Black men blaming white men for the random unnecessary trigger pull crying out to phantoms of racism asking to stop is nothing less than a sure sign of mental illness.

The problem is not the slavery of the past. It’s the lies of the present.

You have the freedom to choose to follow the left. But they will lead you over a cliff.

    • I have met a number of people that went to “Mother Africa” to observe their roots. They come back changed and realize that they were blessed to be born in the USA.
Yes, it could be better, but has gotten much better in the last 50 years.

      • When people talk about ‘reparations’ my answer is offer any decendants of American slaves a check for $10k and a one way ticket to the west African nation of their choice. All sales are final, no refunds.

        • I don’t believe in judging people today based on dead people’s actions, but reparations would be fascinating if they followed the actual math.

I also want experienced law-enforcement veteran Adams to disclose exactly at what point in his illustrious career he was taught that a 9mm pistol (i.e. his standard sidearm) is a “weapon of mass destruction” as he keeps repeating.

        • @ Umm . . .
          “Weapons of mass destruction”
This is exactly what I’ve been talking about here. Words and phrases.

          Call it what it is.

      • Exactly.
An American visiting his genetic homeland of say West Africa is not going to find a social paradise.
A related thing that has honestly confused me is the taking of a Muslim name by Americans, as I understand that the most active slave traders were Muslim who captured non Muslims to be sold on the coast around what is now Ghana. Am I missing something? Wouldn’t I want an ancestral name from my ancestral culture and not one from the guys who hunted and sold me?

  8. I’m going to go out on a limb and guess this guy was schizophrenic. He brought gasoline and a hatchet but didn’t use either. He shot 16 people without a single fatality, then left the gun, as well as the keys to his truck. We’re talking about serious deficits in executive function, on top of the obvious problems relating to other people. As such, I wouldn’t try to pigeonhole his politics into any category that would make sense to a rational person.

    • People like this are generally not among the brightest bulbs in the box. They are however becoming influencers on social media teaching lunacy to our children. Some of these people have money and political clout. Some of them become teachers for K-12 students. Some even become college professors.

    • Yeah the FBI did nothing. Par for the course. No one to blame. Nothing to see here. Shut up Joe Six pack plebeians…

      • Who said there’s no one to blame? Certainly not I. Just because he’s crazy and his politics aren’t likely to fit conventional categories doesn’t mean he isn’t dangerous. In particular I’m interested in finding out about the psychiatric care he received, and whether he was ever adjudicated mentally incompetent.

    • Nothing to see here. Move along peasant. The powers that be knew about this cretin & did nothing. Good thing he “may” have had a pro mag 33 rounder that jammed. Feel better now?😦

    • His lack of fatalities is easily explained. He was a tall man, and the victims were being hit in the legs. To me, this indicates a flinch during rapid fire, and he probably was doing sprat and pray. He wasn’t a POTG and didn’t practice or have training. Not fixing a malfunction is just additional evidence for the hypothesis.

BTW, what does “extended magazines’ mean? Anything over 7 rounds is too large in NY.

  9. Yeah the FBI did nothing. Par for the course. No one to blame. Nothing to see here. Shut up Joe Six pack plebeians…

    • Nothing new there for the FBI.

They knew of over 87% of mass shooters in the last 30 years, that had actively threatened and/or clearly indicated they were going to do it. The FBI in the end did nothing about them knowing they were armed or could get access to guns and knowing they were mental health compromised and clinically insane. In many cases they simply ignored it. They knew about this guy too.

    • So I’m willing to give the FBI some benefit of doubt here.

First, in our systems of laws, a person is innocent until proven guilty, meaning the FBI cannot round up ppl just because they make wacko comments on a web site (even if they round up others and hold them indefinitely for similar actions, it does not make that “right”).
Second, it is nigh impossible to protect 100% of the ppl 100% of the time. We do not see the reports of the 99% that they do catch.

The blame should go, as always, to the perpetrator. Unfortunately, politicians will use this and other events to attempt to subdue the law abiding. That, ultimately, is the real crime as it affects millions, and would last longer than any wounds.

  10. Headline should be “Disarmed victims, prohibited from protecting themselves by their government, helplessly slaughtered by law breaker.”

    • Helpless, yes. Slaughtered no.

New York sheep running like a stampeding herd after a lightning flash. He must have picked a very passive car full of commuters. There are dangerous gangs in New York that also ride the subway. He would not dare start crap like this anywhere near them! I wonder what criteria he used to choose THIS car?

  11. The original reports said that he had a .380, but this article has upgraded that to a 9mm. I’d been following the story because the description of “380 with extended magazines” never made sense. What is “extended” in New York, just more than seven? Today we hear that 10 people were hit, but that no one died. I’m very happy that everyone survived, but this goes back to suggesting that this really was a 380 and that he was firing totally blind in smoke filled subway car. Yes: He totally blinded himself with his own smoke grenade, shot randomly, couldn’t clear a simple jam, and then ran away with the rest of the crowd.
I wonder if we will ever get the full story on this. Surely those that want to demonize “the gun” will tell us all about this. I seriously doubt that it matches the latest pattern of catch phrases. It was probably not a “ghost gun” nor did it have extended magazines the way any serious gun owner thinks of extended (must more than 17). It might have been a crappy 380 pocket gun.

    • We were 7 for a bit currently 10 so any standard capacity magazine over 10 fits the criteria. We do see a lot of the 20-30odd extended magazines as well as a few of the drums because some people think they look cool and occasionally use them to commit crimes. In the end it’s a bit silly to focus on the equipment and not the criminals but welcome to NY and Biden’s pet projects

    • I saw a picture of his Glock, and it had scratch marks on the barrel and slide series numbers, but not enough to remove them. It’s like he tried to make it a “ghost gun,” but then he got scared.

  12. Black, Racist, Terrorist. Nope doesn’t fit the Narrative. Move along; nothing to see here.

  13. Right On Time…. considering some proposed BATFingE rules changes, legislative schemes and EO BS being tossed about

  14. I say the guy is a patsy. I’m not going to believe the propaganda. Just seems weird to me a black guy doing that. More race crap, everybody knows only white guys do that kinda sht. Black cell operatives set it all up, the blog post, everything. And I’ll tell yah why, the mayor was pumping the ghost gunm ban sht.
Yep it was all a set up.

  15. FRANK James? Isn’t he Jesse’s bro’?
