According to New York’s SAFE Act, Empire State residents who are not shooting at a gun range may only load their legal, registered handgun with seven bullets. Why? So that they (or someone) have to reload during a spree killing, giving defenders a chance—however momentary—to intervene. Well, not them. Spree killers. Obvs. People who are not known to obey gun laws. So what’s the point, really? . . .
A desire for politicians to prove to gullible constituents that they “did something” to curb “gun violence” after the Sandy Hook slaughter? Civilian disarmament? Yes and yes. No matter what the motivation the end result of this fascist Kabuki theater is clear enough: otherwise law-abiding citizens losing their gun rights over loading an “extra” three bullets (or more).
Oh and New Yorkers are at greater risk of death, disfigurement and injury. No really. ‘Cause sometimes seven rounds just aren’t enough. Just ask the New York City Police Department, whose officers carry Glock 19’s with “high-capacity” ammunition magazines (18 rounds total) and achieve a 17 percent hit ratio on human targets. Her husband’s iPhone was stolen during the melee, according to cops.

The couple could have been killed. Or they could have had a gun (in an alternate state or universe) and stopped the attack in its tracks. Or not. In which case, seven bullets would not have been enough rounds for the job at hand. OK, it may have been. But it may not have been. And what’s the danger of of an armed American carrying, I dunno, 15 rounds? Right. Spree killing.

How many spree killers will be limited by the new law? None. How many New Yorkers will be hurt or killed because gangs know their victims are disarmed? And even that the ones who are (at home thanks to the de facto ban on concealed carry) aren’t so much?

The lucky souls who can legally carry in NY live in counties which have better things to do then to count a citizens magazine.If things go Tango Uniform and shots are fired in a lawful DGU, being busted for having too many bullets is the least of the defenders problems. In any event, only the Mayor and Hizzhonors Pals can pack a gun in the Big Apple, so by design the 7 round restriction is irrelevant to most New Yorkers.

I am a Florida native, and I recently had the joy of explaining to a new acquaintence, a New Yorker who just moved to my town, who was amazed that pepper spray was legal and readily available, that she could even get a stun gun or tazer, or *gasp* as a Florida resident, actually purchase a gun. All without revealing that I was carrying at the time, because I honestly don’t know how she would have reacted.
It’s New York, where anything that could be used for self defense is banned because a “Bad Person” might use it for bad purposes. Oh, and we can’t be trusted with novelty lighters, either. Go figure…
She told me a friend of hers got arrested for having a box cutter in his car. Insanity.
There’s a reason I don’t go back to NYC for family functions anymore. There’s also a reason I don’t talk guns with most of the non-LEO’s in my family when they come out to visit. However, I do talk a lot about guns to east coast transplants that I meet that now live out here (I even have brought a few to the range). The results vary, but I feel that if they hear someone with a similar sounding accent educating them about how firearms are just a part of everyday life out here in AZ, maybe they might not be as inclined to turn my little slice of freedom into NYC part deux. I encourage others in my position to do the same. Newly transplanted residents are very open to anybody being nice to them when they first move. If it is someone that “they can relate to”, even more so. I learned this after I took a trip to Europe and noticed that the Americans always found other Americans to hang out with in every city I visited.

If I were a NYC resident, I am absolutely certain that if there was a home invasion, and shots fired, It would be because the intruder brought me a gun to use after I took it away from him. I don’t understand the criminal mind so why he brought two guns, I just don’t know.

The best part about NY is that as a Permit holder I am legally allowed to carry my firearm only loaded with 7 in the magazine. but it is illegal for me to carry a taser or stun gun to have a less lethal option.

I’m glad there’s so much hate on the SAFE Act from within and outside of my state, but really, the non-expiring AWB, Sullivan Laws, etc have been bootheels on the necks of gun owners for years, so it’s more fair to blame the NYS/NYC “gun climate” that has prevailed over the last several decades, rather than this latest insult from Albany.

Luckily I live in ‘upstate’ NY which has a fairly rural and agrarian culture. At this point 52/62 counties have passed resolutions denouncing the unSAFE act, and I hope to see a strong electoral response in the future. My 26 years on earth however strongly suggest my hopes are in vein.
I truly wish NYC could form its own entity rather than continuing to impede the freedom of the rest of the state which is vastly different in terms of character, mentality and lifestyle. My permit is good in all of NYS, even long island. However, on the occasion I drive down to visit college friends and family I face a nerve wracking 30 or so minutes through this foreign land where my constitutional rights cease to exist until I see the welcoming sign that I have left Queens and am in Nassau County where my rights are respected.

If concealed carry were widespread in the area, then the attack likely would have never occurred. The victims were defenseless. The gang knew they were defenseless, and they preyed upon them. More of this will occur as gun ownership and concealed carry diminishes in that area.
