Keith Cho after gang attack (courtesy CBS News)

According to New York’s SAFE Act, Empire State residents who are not shooting at a gun range may only load their legal, registered handgun with seven bullets. Why? So that they (or someone) have to reload during a spree killing, giving defenders a chance—however momentary—to intervene. Well, not them. Spree killers. Obvs. People who are not known to obey gun laws. So what’s the point, really? . . .

A desire for politicians to prove to gullible constituents that they “did something” to curb “gun violence” after the Sandy Hook slaughter? Civilian disarmament? Yes and yes. No matter what the motivation the end result of this fascist Kabuki theater is clear enough: otherwise law-abiding citizens losing their gun rights over loading an “extra” three bullets (or more).

Oh and New Yorkers are at greater risk of death, disfigurement and injury. No really. ‘Cause sometimes seven rounds just aren’t enough. Just ask the New York City Police Department, whose officers carry Glock 19’s with “high-capacity” ammunition magazines (18 rounds total) and achieve a 17 percent hit ratio on human targets. Or check this from nydailynews.com:

Ronald Russo, 30, and his wife, Alanna, apparently had the green light and the husband honked at the group to get out of the way. The rowdy kids started kicking the car, according to the criminal complaint. Ronald Russo got out to check on potential damage to his vehicle.

And that’s when all hell broke loose.

Ronald Russo was dragged to the ground. Then he was punched and kicked in the head. He felt more blows all over his body, investigators said. He suffered a fractured nose, a broken septum, a blood clot and abrasions to his shoulder. He was treated and released from Beth Israel Medical Center.

In the midst of the attack, there was a steady chorus of epithets. “White motherf—–!” screamed the attackers, who ranged in age from 12 to 18.

Alanna Russo, 30, was calling 911 when the 12-year-old girl pulled the woman’s hair and threw her to the ground. The victim’s head slammed into the concrete. She suffered a black eye, bleeding and difficulty breathing, prosecutors said, but she refused medical attention.

Her husband’s iPhone was stolen during the melee, according to cops.

The kids scattered after the brazen attack.

The couple could have been killed. Or they could have had a gun (in an alternate state or universe) and stopped the attack in its tracks. Or not. In which case, seven bullets would not have been enough rounds for the job at hand. OK, it may have been. But it may not have been. And what’s the danger of of an armed American carrying, I dunno, 15 rounds? Right. Spree killing.

Here’s another cautionary tale via dailymail.co.uk:

The NYPD is warning Manhattan cyclists to beware gangs who are setting up booby traps along the bike path on the Hudson River and then beating and robbing the unfortunate victims.

Police only have a vague description of the gang who have set up rope clotheslines designed to knock cyclists off their bikes before attacking them with bats and brass knuckles.

Warning those who use the popular route to New Jersey that crosses the George Washington Bridge at 164th street in Washington Heights to be on their guard, the NYPD admit they are concerned by the spate of attacks.

As mentioned above, the NYPD have guns with “high capacity magazines.” So while they may be “concerned” about these gang attacks imagine how cyclists without any firearm whatsoever feels. Or what they could do to save their life with seven bullets. Much better but . . . good enough? Seven good, 10 better, 17 and so on (NYPD cops usually carry two spare magazines, giving them a total of 52 rounds).

‘The rope I saw at the last second, but it was too late. I was already clothes-lined,’ Cho said.
Set upon by the gang, Cho felt blows reign down on him and his attackers made off with his cellphone and cash.
And last week, another man was hit off his bike with a bat and then beaten and mugged along the same stretch of the cycling route.
The NYPD believe that both attacks are connected and are looking for suspects in their 20s.

How many spree killers will be limited by the new law? None. How many New Yorkers will be hurt or killed because gangs know their victims are disarmed? And even that the ones who are (at home thanks to the de facto ban on concealed carry) aren’t so much?

  1. Perhaps were looking at this from the wrong viewpoint.

The lucky souls who can legally carry in NY live in counties which have better things to do then to count a citizens magazine. If things go Tango Uniform and shots are fired in a lawful DGU, being busted for having too many bullets is the least of the defenders problems. In any event, only the Mayor and Hizzhonors Pals can pack a gun in the Big Apple, so by design the 7 round restriction is irrelevant to most New Yorkers.

No, the law is intended to shortstop anyone wanting to become people of the gun.Why bother researching Glock pistols, action shooting sports, or getting an AR when there’s miles of red tape and governennt bullshit?
The SAFE Act is aptly named, because it makes the ground safe for more restrictive laws down the road.

The next generation of New Yorkers will grow up thinking 7 rounds is plenty of ammunition, and why won’t the rest of the US follow their fine example ?That’s the point.

    • Bloomer’s personal ass-wipes aren’t limited to magazine capacity or weapon type nor are they hindered by “gun free zones.”

  2. I am a Florida native, and I recently had the joy of explaining to a new acquaintence, a New Yorker who just moved to my town, who was amazed that pepper spray was legal and readily available, that she could even get a stun gun or tazer, or *gasp* as a Florida resident, actually purchase a gun. All without revealing that I was carrying at the time, because I honestly don’t know how she would have reacted.

    • It’s New York, where anything that could be used for self defense is banned because a “Bad Person” might use it for bad purposes. Oh, and we can’t be trusted with novelty lighters, either. Go figure…

    • There’s a reason I don’t go back to NYC for family functions anymore. There’s also a reason I don’t talk guns with most of the non-LEO’s in my family when they come out to visit. However, I do talk a lot about guns to east coast transplants that I meet that now live out here (I even have brought a few to the range). The results vary, but I feel that if they hear someone with a similar sounding accent educating them about how firearms are just a part of everyday life out here in AZ, maybe they might not be as inclined to turn my little slice of freedom into NYC part deux. I encourage others in my position to do the same. Newly transplanted residents are very open to anybody being nice to them when they first move. If it is someone that “they can relate to”, even more so. I learned this after I took a trip to Europe and noticed that the Americans always found other Americans to hang out with in every city I visited.

  3. It’s worse than that even in New York City. You have to be approved with a gun permit for a particular registered firearm even to possess a gun in your home (a “premises license”. ~$430 for a handgun, ~$230 for long gun http://www.nyc.gov/html/nypd/html/permits/gun_licensing_faq.shtml#HowDoIApply Why even bother worrying about the SAFE act? If you want to carry there you are breaking the law already. If you work for a living and want a gun for your home you are likely going to have to break the law. The “extra” penalty is just inventing felonies? Whatever. People who want a gun in New York have one police approval or not.

    • If I were a NYC resident, I am absolutely certain that if there was a home invasion, and shots fired, It would be because the intruder brought me a gun to use after I took it away from him. I don’t understand the criminal mind so why he brought two guns, I just don’t know.

      • That is absolutely the most sound-advice I’ve heard yet on the subject. I declare henceforth we refer to that tactic as a “New York Invasion Defense” to go right along with the “New York Reload.”

        • This technique has work for Law Enforcement for decades.

Officer 1: Yeah, he had a gun..there it is laying on the ground next to him.

Officer 2: Hmm, it looks like the same kind of gun we took off that other guy last night.

Officer 3: Yeah, yeah it does, kinda…hehe.

        • What BDub is referring to was called the Spanish Automatic ploy. My dad , NYPD, told me everyone carried a spare Spanish auto, I think a Star , to drop by the body if needed. I would guess the evidence locker is full of them.

  4. The best part about NY is that as a Permit holder I am legally allowed to carry my firearm only loaded with 7 in the magazine. but it is illegal for me to carry a taser or stun gun to have a less lethal option.

  5. We were limited to ten rounds carry before the SAFE Act was even an idea. I’m glad there’s so much hate on the SAFE Act from within and outside of my state, but really, the non-expiring AWB, Sullivan Laws, etc have been bootheels on the necks of gun owners for years, so it’s more fair to blame the NYS/NYC “gun climate” that has prevailed over the last several decades, rather than this latest insult from Albany.

  6. And they say that living in the “Wild West” would be a bloodbath. Looks like the big city is a hell of a lot worse.

      • Agreed. Blooming bergians wants to act like death by gun is the defining aspect of crime in an area. They don’t want to look at rape, assault & battery, property damage, theft, etc.

If you are a woman in NYC and were raped and paralyzed from the neck down… your life was spared and thank goodness for the SAFE act because you might have been raped and killed with a gun. Nevermind the fact that if you had a gun to begin with the rape and paralyzation likely would not have occurred. An armed criminal does not want armed prey.

  7. Ah, so nice to live in a free part of the country, Arizona. Stay the F*** out Bloomberg, McCain you are almost 1 foot out the door, we are sick of your crap.

  8. How many New York City residents will be murdered, raped or mugged because the next Mayor has all of Bloomberg’s hatred for citizen armed self defense with none of his willingness to violate other Constitutional rights in an attempt to keep the city safe.

    • Wait, so there’s no violent crime in Ireland? Japan? Latin America? China? Italy? India? Russia? The Middle East? Appalachia?

Whew! Glad to know all I have to do is get away from the blacks and I’m safe. Soocer game in England, here I come!

      • Alpo, please have your knees checked out. You just exposed them to severe trauma…though your reaction time is about 50 years past the pull date.

    • No, it happens, you just don’t hear about it. White on white crimes, black on black crimes, etc. are very common, but isn’t exciting enough for the daily news- racial tensions are good for ratings.

    • Serial killers like Ted Bundy and Gary Ridgeway raped women, strangled them and then had sex with their dead bodies. Steven Hayes and Joshua Komisarjevsky murdered a whole family in Cheshire, CT. I can do this all day.

Y’know, I hate to say it, but no other race kills like that.

        • There is only one race. We are only variations of Aa and Bb gene combinations. There is more gene variation within “racial” groups than between them. As to culture, that’s different. A group that defines itself by the previous four hundred years of its history isn’t looking to the future. And yes, that’s the Irish. We are only limited by what we can personally accomplish. But dealing drugs and killing each other on a daily basis probably isn’t a positive thing. BTW, who buys all these drugs?

  9. Agreed on the unSAFE act being moot in NYC due to the de facto ban which has been in place for years.

Luckily I live in ‘upstate’ NY which has a fairly rural and agrarian culture. At this point 52/62 counties have passed resolutions denouncing the unSAFE act, and I hope to see a strong electoral response in the future. My 26 years on earth however strongly suggest my hopes are in vein.

I truly wish NYC could form its own entity rather than continuing to impede the freedom of the rest of the state which is vastly different in terms of character, mentality and lifestyle. My permit is good in all of NYS, even long island. However, on the occasion I drive down to visit college friends and family I face a nerve wracking 30 or so minutes through this foreign land where my constitutional rights cease to exist until I see the welcoming sign that I have left Queens and am in Nassau County where my rights are respected.

    • Right? So the magazine extends beyond the grip, then. If that be the case…why not just use a G17?

  10. Nice to see the NYPD is concerned. When one of their own gets clotheslined a Blue Ribbon task force will be convened.
Until then learn Judo and ride slowly.

  11. “Glock 19′s with “high-capacity” ammunition magazines (18 rounds total)” are they using Glock 19’s with Glock 17 mags or is there a typo?

  12. We all know these kids will never be caught. They scatter to the four winds as soon as they hear sirens and there are enough of them that witnesses won’t be able to give an accurate description of any one. They’ll congregate again somewhere else later on, and do this again, and again, and again.

    • Don’t be silly, Jim.

As “hell” “child” above reassures us, there is nothing to see here, move along. This is just an example of “the media” trumping up charges on racial grounds to get readers.

I mean it’s not like there was anything WRONG with this attack. Nor that the attackers displayed any racist (or sexist) animus in conducting their violent mobbing.

Besides, if they DID commit violence while yelling racist and sexist things, and that was reported, it is a violation of a social contract established in the 1960s and imposed since then. Namely, that if you observe certain things–like being called racial slurs while being kicked and beaten senseless after being disarmed by the government–there is nothing to see…provided you fit into the categories of personhood that by social construct or government decree are not permitted to speak up or fight back. Which I would say abrogates the First Amendment as well as the Second, but I forget. Nothing to see here. Move along.

  13. If concealed carry were widespread in the area, then the attack likely would have never occurred. The victims were defenseless. The gang knew they were defenseless, and they preyed upon them. More of this will occur as gun ownership and concealed carry diminishes in that area.

    • Nah. Gangs are stupid and don’t think ahead like that. Don’t make deterrence the key issue of guns, it won’t work… but defense? Yeah, that works great.

  14. 1) Don’t get out of the car.

    2) Why are we reading about NYPD warnings from “The Daily Mail,” in London? Sounds like bullshit to me.

  15. This was all because Ronald Russo was more concerned about damage to his freakin’ CAR than he was concerned about damage to his wife or himself. DUMBASS. He loves his car more than he loves his wife; that’s all I can conclude from this sorry story. Did he imagine they only wanted to harm his precious car, and not its occupants?

Keep doors locked… ignore color of light… run the hell over any of the mob that are in the way. What kind of idiot gets out in a mob and checks his car for damage? This wouldn’t have happened to a mobster.

Manhattan cyclists need to form their own gangs, send some mounted “bait” slightly ahead, and then swoop into the fray and take care of some mofin’ BIDNESS!!

  16. NYC’s 5 counties and Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk are full of freedom hating communists. Upstate there are a few enclaves – Albany, Saratoga, Ithica, Rochester and Buffalo. The rest of NY has a lot of good people. The problem is that half or more of the state’s population is in the areas I mentioned. Those of you in the free parts of America probably don’t care…can’t blame you there, but not all of NY is bad news.
