Passage by California lawmakers of anti-gun Democrat Gov. Newsom’s call for a constitutional convention to push a 28th Amendment dictating gun control measures is a horrible move which should be rejected by all other states, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms says. 

Newsom’s proposal, announced earlier in the summer and explained by the Los Angeles Times, would mandate “universal background checks” on all firearm purchases, raise the minimum age to purchase firearms to 21 years, create a “reasonable waiting period” on gun purchases and ban the sale of modern semiautomatic firearms—the so-called “assault weapons” anti-gunners despise—in a package that would essentially destroy the Second Amendment, which has been their goal for decades.

“Gavin Newsom’s proposal would effectively turn the right to keep and bear arms into a government-regulated privilege,” CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb stressed. “As we just witnessed in New Mexico, an anti-gun-rights governor could use such a constitutional amendment to effectively disarm the citizenry as a ‘public health emergency’ without any recourse of legal challenge. We’re actually very fortunate that New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham attempted such an outrageous infringement on Second Amendment rights, just so the nation could see how extreme she, Newsom and other like-minded politicians would become if they could legally get away with it.

“Newsom and his ilk are pushing this scheme under the guise of ‘gun safety,’ when we all know better,” he continued. “This is a poorly disguised attempt to nullify the right to keep and bear arms and underscores the need for every gun owner in America to tell their state lawmakers to oppose Newsom’s resolution. This is nothing more than an effort to fool the people into surrendering their gun rights, which have been protected for more than two centuries, and recently affirmed and reinforced by three consecutive Supreme Court rulings. 

“Gavin Newsom and his far-left Democrat allies in and out of California want to emasculate the cornerstone amendment in our Bill of Rights,” Gottlieb said. “The time has come to just flat tell them ‘No.’ We are in the process of mailing millions of petitions to veto this proposed 28th Amendment and stop Newsom’s fanatical plan to shred the Constition and our Bill of Rights. We will not sit back and wait, because there are too many billionaires out there willing to put their money behind Newsom’s crusade. So, we’re starting right now to build the public groundswell against this despicable idea.”

    • The title of this article says Newsom’s gambit is designed to “make” our privileges? Or should be “take”…?

      People, everyone calm down. There’s absolutely no way this 28th Amendment will ever pass. Even if it somehow gained approval from the House, the Senate, and the President, it still requires 3/4 of the States (38 total) to confirm. That means only 13 States stand in the way, and there are perhaps triple that number that would vote against ratification.

      No way this will ever happen. None. Zilch.

      • You have to remember that most of the major cities even in otherwise solidly red states have blue politicians and where blue politicians control voter fraud is rampant. It’s been that way for more than a century. New York with its Tammany Hall, Chirac with its dem mayors since the 1800s — the reason Kennedy won was because of his father’s connections with the mob and city hall in Chirac. Not that we would have done a lot better with “I am not a crook” Nixon as it turned out.

        They need us far more than we need them. Don’t even start with the “They control all the wealth” bullshit, the corporation headquarters on the coasts rely on the factories in flyover land to manufacture what they sell.

  2. Just a political stunt. There aren’t enough anti-gun states to secure the needed number for adoption.It also would be quite a crap to call a Convention of the States to restructure the Constitution. There would be no limits on what proposed changes would be offered and the results might not be what people like Newsom want. Be careful what you wish for.

  5. These people are marxists. They want to play the long game and ensure policy seeds are planted in their lifetime that sprout as the number of gun owners who truly support the 2A declines over generations, a trend they consider reality.

    They are incrementally working to destroy every vestige of capitalist, apple pie America you knew as a kid, all while letting violent criminals out of jail early, then calling you insane for wanting to arm and defend yourself from the lethal social condition they caused.

    I’ve made a point of recommending a few good history books for every new gun owner I meet, because what good is a gun owner who doesn’t understand the importance of the 2A in US and world history going back hundreds of years.

    I find it bitterly ironic that our culture likely wouldn’t have been usurped by Newsome types if we simply denied immigration visas to the frankfurt school of social research crew.

      FDR’s state department was so heavily infiltrated it answered more to Moscow than to Washington DC.

      • Woodrow Wilson back in the late 1800’s and his writings show the commie rot they wanted to unleash upon Americans. He was able to lay the groundwork when he became president which eventually allowed FDR to seal our fates.

  6. A Constitutional Convention is a really bad idea. Lots of people good and bad think that a Convention can be limited to whatever purpose it was constituted for. The problem is that once you have given the power to change anything, they could change everything, they could deliberately or even accidentally screw up our entire country.

    • I agree whole-heartedly. I had an exchange of posts with a devotee of a constitutional convention and in my opinion he has blinders on when it comes to what may happen in such a political arena.

  7. I have an idea: let’s allow state by state voting on whether the state agrees with enumerated rights in the Constitution, then allow them to secede if they do not by constitutional amendment. Of course, federal land and military bases in those states would remain the property of the US.

    • You seem to think that Repugnicans are different from Demonkrauts. Nothing could be further from the truth. The rare politician who actually has the country and his constituents in mind is beaten down by the party machinery. The first thing the party whip does when a new pol is elected to office is sit him down and tell him how much money he has to raise for the party election fund pool. What he raises for his own election is over and above what he must raise each period for the party. If that isn’t an invitation to corruption, I don’t know one when it hits me smack between the eyes. No politician in office is going to vote for term limits. Look at all the Repugnicans who said they were only going to stay in office for one or two terms back in the great Repugnican take over during Newt’s term in office. How many of them held that promise? Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Just look at who is in the grey house now and see how power corrupts.

  9. Too many people have a simple and basic misunderstanding about “gun control.” “Gun control” is not now, and has never been, about crime, criminals, or public safety. Quite frankly, the Left couldn’t give a rat’s behind about crime, criminals, or public safety. Gun control is, and has always been, about disarming the citizenry so they cannot represent a threat to the government once the Left establishes the dictatorship they have been working toward since the 1960s and, thanks to the stolen elections of November 2020, January 2021, and November 2022, are now in the process of consolidating. The key word in the term “gun control” is not “gun” – it is “control.”

    A quick study of basic world history will show that one of the first actions taken by every Communist government upon their takeover was to go to all of the local police stations, get the lists of gun owners, and then go door to door and disarm everyone. That is why the Communists – er, I mean the Democrats – want a national gun registry. Is there really anyone at this point in time who still does not understand this?

    And by the way, it is way beyond disingenuous that the Left always speaks of “we need gun control” as if there were currently no laws concerning firearms. There are now more than 24,000 gun control laws in effect at the federal, state, and local levels in this nation. Every conceivable aspect of firearm purchase, ownership, and use is covered dozens of times over. Firearms are by far the single most regulated and restricted consumer product in this nation. The only ones who are impacted by all these laws, however, are the law-abiding, which of course is the goal. Criminals very rarely (check the FBI data on this) even attempt to obtain firearms through legal channels, and are thus unaffected by “gun control.” As I stated above, “gun control” has nothing to do with crime or criminals.

    • Make no mistake. He will be the democrat nominee for president. He will announce as late as possible. So as to not have to face as much scrutiny, as he would by announcing sooner. The Democrat leadership will play him as the great party savior, because Biden will have to bow out do to health concerns.

        • Coumo would have had additional baggage but yeah they are not doing well with having wide appeal with many of their options. Be interesting to see how Newsom’s pandemic response plays outside of California.

  10. Only Newsom could be stupid enough to try for a Constitutional Convention. There is nothing whatsoever stopping the Convention from doing whatever it chooses to do once convened. They could even write an entirely new Constitution as an Amendment to the current Constitution. This is, more or less, what the original Convention did to the Articles of Confederation. That Convention was supposed to strengthen the Federal power in the Articles of Confederation. Instead, they created a whole new Constitution and Government.

    The Convention would not be limited by any mechanism to just his stupid 28th Amendment. This is why I am implacably opposed to a Constitutional Convention, whether convened by Blue or by Red. It will end up with something radically bad, one way or another.

      • While I find AOC rather repulsive, she isn’t on my (I can’t stand) list as much as Ferguson and Newsom.

        Of course, if a speeding taxi driven by a Pakistani immigrant mowed AOC down and turned her into a hood ornament, I would wouldn’t give two flying f—-s about it.

Conservatives, especially 2A advocates (the same kind of “2A advocates” that run around doing open carry “2nd Amendment Audits” and similar stupidity) have long cherished the pipe dream of holding a Constitutional Convention where they envisioned strengthening the 2nd Amendment and tinkering with other parts of the constitution to make it more to their liking.

    I was always amazed that absolutely none of them could conceive of such a convention stripping away their rights and becoming a venue for liberals to get THEIR wishlist enshrined in the new constitution.

    We’d hear the false argument that a new constitutional convention would somehow be limited to just the specific items listed in the call — apparently they missed hearing about the last convention — the one that tore up the Articles of Confederation and started over from scratch writing a whole new constitution.

    And, of course, there was the notion that since the new constitutional convention was a “convention of the states” that somehow it was limited to one vote per state (always while drooling over the red/blue map of the US). Look again. The constitution provides for a convention but does not specify anything about the makeup or procedures for holding the convention. THAT would be left up to congress to determine. There is absolutely zero chance of a one-vote-per-state structure being adopted in this age of “Democracy” — the best we could hope for would be a convention with delegates proportioned by population. There is also nothing saying how the delegates would be selected. The last convention had delegates chosen by the state governments. I suppose that could happen again, but some sort of elections seems more likely. Of course, congress could just save a lot of time and effort by declaring congress itself to be the convention as a Committee of the Whole — they probably wouldn’t but they could, because nothing says they can’t.
