‘Nobody’ May Be the Movie America Needs Most Right Now

Now that that’s out of the way, ‘Nobody,’ appears to be a cross between ‘John Wick’ and ‘Death Wish’ starring Saul Goodman Bob Odenkirk as a put-upon suburban dad. The good news is the ‘Nobody’ villains only steal his daughter’s kitty cat bracelet…no puppies were harmed in the making of this shoot-em-up.

As Rotten Tomatoes summarizes the plot . . .

Hutch Mansell, (is) an underestimated and overlooked dad and husband, taking life’s indignities on the chin and never pushing back. A nobody. When two thieves break into his suburban home one night, Hutch declines to defend himself or his family, hoping to prevent serious violence. His teenage son, Blake (Gage Munroe, The Shack), is disappointed in him and his wife, Becca (Connie Nielsen, Wonder Woman), seems to pull only further away.

The aftermath of the incident strikes a match to Hutch’s long-simmering rage, triggering dormant instincts and propelling him on a brutal path that will surface dark secrets and lethal skills. In a barrage of fists, gunfire and squealing tires, Hutch must save his family from a dangerous adversary (famed Russian actor Aleksey Serebryakov, Amazon’s McMafia)–and ensure that he will never be underestimated as a nobody again.

In other words, ‘Nobody’ is 92 minutes packed with lots of bad guys getting kilt and blowed up. The Ilya Naishuller action flick, like 1974’s ‘Death Wish’ before it, would appear to tap into America’s prevailing national sense of concern about rising crime, civil unrest, defunded police departments and prosecutors who don’t prosecute criminals.

Critics will probably be about as receptive to ‘Nobody’ as they were to its predecessor. But don’t be surprised if, like Death Wish (both the original and the 2018 remake), audiences are far more enthusiastic as ‘Nobody’ looks like it features lots of good, wholesome ballistic entertainment…and who can’t use more of that these days?

      • Amen! Personally I am glad to see this “related” info. I like movies. I like John Wick. I think I’ll like this and this is the first of this. If you are not interested, skip it and move on. Why is the poster wasting his time. And I doubt that if this were removed that if would be replace by some super gun content. This is in addition to gun articles, not in lieu of them. Chill.

  3. Read the Brian Garfield book and watched the Charles Bronson movie. As usual, the book was better. Haven’t seen the remake.

    • A book can’t be “better” than a movie, they are two different mediums. Now, you may well have *enjoyed* the book more than you enjoyed the movie, that is indeed a fair statement. You may have thought the story or the plot particulars were better in the book than in they were in the movie, for sure. One movie can be “better” than another movie, likewise books, but comparing a book to a movie is apples and oranges.
      You hear it a lot, “the book was better than the movie,” but it doesn’t make sense when stated that way. Most of the time, I think people just want to have some sense of superiority that they’ve actually read the book.

        A book can convey a story, and so can a movie. Both have a cast of characters, and a plot (usually). One can be better than the other to the audience, a reader or viewer…

      • I’ll give you two examples how you’re wrong. “Hitchhiker’s guide to the Galaxy” and more recently “Ready Player one”. Both books were astonishing. Both movies had little if anything to do with the book, quick slapdash attempts to make money off the title without even attempting to do justice to the original story. Both books were “better than the movie”.

  4. Yep, the critics will hate it as will Hollywierd, and it will be a resounding financial success. I don’t go to movies much since most of the new ones are crap, but this one I will; that is I will if that Biden bozo hasn’t locked down the theaters.

    • The local theater here that opened in the 80’s is gone for good now thanks to Covid Mania. Now it’s just China-owned AMC. No thanks, I’ll just drive to the next town. I’ve always hated boycotts because it hurts employees that have no say in the company. We’re past that now. It’s time to make a list, and think about who you’re willing to support.

    • I have found professional movie critics to be a reliable indicator of whether or not I will like a movie. If they don’t like it, I will.

    • I have a feeling this movie is going to hit a nerve and be more popular than critics are panning it to be. Much like how Falling Down was. Even Keanu admitted he only did the original John Wick as an expected one-off because he never thought it would have the cult following it garnered.

      I, personally, will likely see this movie, though I would have been even more excited if “Mr. Nobody” was a regular Joe like you or me, instead of the usual “John Wick, Jason Bourne, Liam Neeson” good guy with a really top paygrade professional past he can draw from.

      De-platforming Qanon and Donald Trump’s calls for insurrection is fine by me, given his age and poor health he may soon be De-platformed from planet earth.

  10. I enjoyed the original Death Wish, for all its flaws. The sequels were tripe, though Death Wish III was unintentionally quite funny at times.

    The 2018 remake…Eli Roth directed it, that’s pretty much all you need to know. If you like seeing people get tortured and maimed, you’re all set. If you want plot or acting, well….

  13. More intensely graphic violence piped into the squishy brains of America, perfect. No, I don’t care what the story is, regular-guy-strikes-back fantasy or whatever. The stories from old movies managed to get their point across without sickening blood and gore and vulgar language.

    I’m not totally adverse to portrayals of violence and language, but there has to be a breaking point. I’m tired of gun people genuflecting to Eddy the Eagle and touting how safe and responsible they are, then cheering along what has to be a driving factor to the degeneration of society, Hollywood’s mission to totally desensitize people to portrayals of violence.

    Saving Private Ryan was hard to watch but the violence served a stark purpose — this is what men went through. A friend who watched one of the John Wick films was showing me some scenes on YouTube, including one where someone gets a pencil slowing pushed through his eye into his brain, with no detail spared — what’s the value of that? He said the theater cheered. Go ahead and tell me that isn’t messed up.

    • Don’t forget that a large portion of Hollywood is owned by China. So, most movies now are made for the Chinese market. They spend way more on movies than we do. So, yet another area where we lost our cutting edge.

      Hollywood at times would produce movies that portrayed the military in a positive light. Sadly, those days are gone. We are now the consumers of Chinese propaganda. What’s worse is far too many Americans fall for it.

    • Realistic depictions of the use of force serve exactly the same purpose they did in “Saving Private Ryan”. I love old movies more than most, but ending a fight with the gentle touch of a fencing foil, or a blank-pop followed by an actor hammishly clutching his bloodless side, conveyed nothing of the real nature of conflict and therefore deprived courage of much of its meaning. Realistic (not stylized / gamer) effects reinforce the story’s message and/or real-life protagonists’ valor in facing pain and death.

      Coupled with the right plot, it can also reinforce the values – like a classical sense of justice (right and wrong; choice = consequence) – that are degenerating today, not because of desensitization, but the exact opposite – squeamishness and sensitivity to the feelings of degenerates.

  16. Odenkirk is another Hollywierd droid who is very anti 2A, but has no problem with guns when they are used as props to make him and his friends money. All the while, they want people like you and me rounded up into camps.

      It doesn’t matter, as long as guns ‘Save the Day’. The 17 year-old, watching the movie with a hand on his girlfriend’s thigh in the theater sees guns as being seriously cool.

      That’s the message he gets out of it, and if he gets mugged on the way back to his battered import car, he wishes he had a gun…

I liked the snippet where the main character uses a rifle (that I can only surmise is a serious caliber, perhaps chambered in .308 Winchester?) and takes out three attackers (who were dumb enough to be the same height and advancing in a nice, straight line) with a single shot that appears to go through all of their necks or heads.

    As someone else stated, this is a dark humor/comedy film.

    For anyone who is really dense or half-asleep for some reason, you can probably understand that three attackers in the real world would almost never be the same height and maintain a perfectly straight line as they advance toward you — and you would almost never be in just the right firing position to take out all three attackers with one shot. THAT is obviously not going to happen in real life which moves this film into the dark humor/comedy genre.

      I first became aware of Odenkirk from “Breaking Bad”, and followed over to “Better Call Saul”. He has serous acting chops, for primarily a comedy guy.

      I’ll be checking it out…

  19. If this movie was about killing Biden, Harris, Pelosi and Schumer in an attack on decency and freedom in this country it would sell to OVER half of the legitimate voters in the US, otherwise known as Trumpsters who just got screwed by an illegal election that nobody had the BALLS to contest.

    Heal wounds?? F Biden and his first generation phony, trash, whore “Vice President” who openly F’ed her way up the political spectrum.

    This will be a disgusting 4 years until we have a chance to vote for a Trump relative who has the backbone to correct this shit again with Trump’s invaluable advice to destroy the “SWAMP” in DC forever.

    I’ve been spending my time watching a video of a real American Hero, there’s much to learn from watching his quick thinking and strategic mindset. He’s juggling multiple issues, leading the threat away from the protected persons and coordinating the movement of a reaction force to counter the threat, all while maintaining his own personal security and movement through a complex physical environment.

    Watching this operator deny the Qanon and Trump supporter insurrectionists their target, while leading them directly into the arms of a superior force is poetry in motion.

    Eugene makes it look easy, considering we’re talking about Trump supporters, it probably was pretty easy to dupe them.
