The NRA began holding an event they called the Carry Guard Expo in 2017. It was named for the gun rights org’s gun owner insurance program that it rolled out at the ’17 NRAAM. But the program (and the Expos) have been the source of lots of problems for the NRA ever since.
The NRA is currently embroiled in litigation over the insurance program in New York. Washington State recently shut sales of the insurance product down and other states’ insurance commissioners are reportedly eyeing Carry Guard as well.
Last year, mother nature intervened and forced the cancellation of the second annual Carry Guard Expo that was to have taken place in Richmond, Virginia.
Hoping for better luck (and dumping the Carry Guard association), the NRA has announced that they’ll hold what they’re now calling the NRA Personal Protection Expo here in the great state of Texas in September.
(Those of you with good memories may remember that the first Carry Guard Expo in Milwaukee was originally announced as the Personal Protection Expo…until the Carry Guard program was rolled out about three weeks later and the name was changed.)

NRA Personal Protection Expo Scheduled For Sept. 6-8, 2019, in Fort Worth, Texas
FAIRFAX, Va. – The National Rifle Association is proud to announce the return of the NRA Personal Protection Expo sponsored by Kel-Tec and Ruger, scheduled for Sept. 6-8, 2019, at the Fort Worth Convention Center in Fort Worth, Texas.
The NRA Personal Protection Expo (formerly NRA Carry Guard Expo) is a three-day educational and interactive experience dedicated to individuals interested in increasing their knowledge and skills of personal protection, concealed carry and home defense. This event will equip novices and experts alike with the products, skills, knowledge and mindset necessary to be prepared to respond when a threat arises.
The NRA Personal Protection Expo’s exhibit hall will feature leading firearm and accessory companies showcasing their guns and gear designed for self-defense and concealed carry. The expo will also conduct a Concealed Carry Fashion Show in which concealment clothing and gear designed for men and women will be modeled.
Visitors can attend more than 120 seminars and workshops featuring the best personal protection and concealed carry practices taught and demonstrated by leading experts and instructors from across the country, including NRA staff from Competitive Shooting and Education & Training.
The NRA Personal Protection Expo is the firearms education event of the year. Seminar topics will include self-defense techniques, home defense and preparedness, situational awareness, concealed carry techniques and lifestyle, medical and trauma training, and much more.

But, everyone knows that no one needs training. Evolution over the last 100 years have insured that all humans are born with the instincts to use firearms.
1) Firearms were developed to mimic the handling of objects like bats or knives, which humans most certainly have been around long enough to develop instincts for. I’d also argue there is *something* primeval at play when it comes to humans & firearms, given how readily people & even children adapt to them; probably some combination of spear-throwing & fist-fighting ‘software’ that we tap into when we pick up a gun.
2) Firearms as well as using them them half-effectively at close range, are pretty simple. “God made Man, but Sam Colt made them equal” was coined long before today’s professional trainers came around to beg for nickels.

Meanwhile, only a couple of years after floating a bill to mandate California gun owners to carry $1 million in liability coverage, this session a bill is pending to outlaw “murder insurance” except to the extent it provides property damage coverage. The Legislature didn’t know anything about insurance coverage then, and nothing has changed up to now. The first plan was touted as a way of relieving the State from the huge burden of paying for the medical care of the thousands of victims of “gun violence,” failing to recognize that the insurance that would be required would pay only in the event of a negligently inflicted gun shot wound, but not in the case of attempted murder or justifiable self-defense. The new bill banning “murder insurance” in order to punish people who find it necessary to use their guns, fails to recognize that none of these policies provide coverage for intentional homicide.
Total stupidity. But it is what we have come to expect.
“We just thought the insurance would cost people money; we never expected anyone to make money off it, least of all the NRA!” Dumbasses. It’s comical, too, since Carry Guard is of rather dubious utility in the first place, ergo they are trying to pass a law to prevent foolish gun owners from being parted with their money by a predatory business; you’d think they’d be all for it.

This event was originally intended to be a clone of the USCCA’s Concealed Carry Expo event, which is actually held this weekend in Pittsburgh. NRA Carry Guard was pretty much a bad clone of the USCCA with a piss-poor insurance product and a boutique training program that contradicted NRA’s own in-house training program. It was run by Ackerman McQueen.
If you go to the NRA Personal Protection Expo, it sill says NRA Carry Guard Expo in some places. I guess the NRA is trying to salvage what is left from the NRA Carry Guard disaster.
The contract with the convention center was likely made by Ackerman McQueen for the NRA last year and the NRA is still on the hook for it. A lot of the booths on the exhibition floor are still empty, there is no event schedule and the housing link doesn’t work.This expo will likely be another financial loss for the NRA.

I had to go out and purchase new, different Instructors Insurance. Whether NRA are liars, thieves or just incompetent (can I get an amen to all 3) I will not be leaving another dime of my money with them until they seriously get their shit together.
Wayne needs to be fired today (20 years ago would’ve worked too), the Board needs to be reconstituted and the number of seats reduced by half.
Contracts must be available for examination by members, it is a 501-c after all, supported to be transparent and accountable to its membership.

I’m their target audience and I live near that city. I won’t be attending. They messed up royally when they brought out this program and told loyal supporters who were already in that space to screw off. Of course they also caused themselves (ourselves) lots of other problems too.
