New York City’s police overtime crisis—brought on by surging violent crime—might be alleviated if the city would support, rather than restrict, the gun rights of its law-abiding residents, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said today.
Published reports have detailed how the city is expected to exceed its overtime budget by an estimated $143 million by the end of this fiscal year.
“The crime situation in New York City is out of control,” said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. “Part of the blame goes to former Mayor Bill di Blasio, and part of it to new Mayor Eric Adams, but the real problem has been festering for generations, ever since the Big Apple erected big obstacles to the exercise of the Second Amendment right to both keep and bear arms.
“Nothing worries criminals more than legally-armed citizens, otherwise known as ‘would-be victims’,” he observed. “If city officials from the mayor on down weren’t so determined to keep law-abiding citizens disarmed, instead of preying on the public, criminals would be praying they don’t get shot by an intended victim.
“We don’t expect Mayor Adams to immediately understand this common-sense approach to crime,” Gottlieb continued. “After all, the mayor has armed police bodyguards, but average citizens don’t. He enjoys a level of security that has been withheld from his constituents for decades. He paraded around the Met Gala in a tuxedo emblazoned with the words ‘End Gun Violence,’ which is symbolism over substance.
“New York City police officers are fighting a war against a violent criminal element that has gotten used to leniency,” he stated. “The city’s Draconian gun controls have created a nearly risk-free working environment for violent criminals, and that needs to change. If Adams wants safer neighborhoods, he should spearhead a movement to give his constituents the tools, and support from the legal establishment, to fight back.
“The national gun control experiment has failed, and in New York it has failed miserably,” Gottlieb said. “The time has come to abandon what hasn’t worked, and adopt policies and philosophies that will work. It’s time for the perps, not the public, to be afraid. He can save lives, and the budget, by changing the city’s course. Put citizens and over-worked police in the winner’s circle by making sure criminals are always the losers.”
If violent crime is to be curbed, it is only the intended victim who can do it. The felon does not fear the police, and he fears neither judge nor jury. Therefore what he must be taught to fear is his victim.

Current FBI data shows that legally armed citizens. shoot and kill more criminals. Than are shot and killed by Law Enforcement. So there is that.

As far as I can tell, the NYPD and the government of NYC would never consider ANY use of a firearm by one of their subjects to be anything other than CRIMINAL, even for an obvious case of self-defense.
I guarantee that their view is that increased use of firearms for self-defense would INCREASE their overhead as they would have all that many more “criminals” to round up and persecute.

My guess is the NYPD’s overtime budget wouldn’t be decreased much at all since a defensive gun use would usually necessitate a 911 call anyway.

Might take a few months many a couple years but the rate of violent crime would go down and level off at a reasonable level. For a city with 7 million residents there will still be much crime but it would get better
New Yorkers are legally allowed to kill eachother at will as long as a firearm is not used. But when guns are invloved, the full weight of the New York government descends on them. That state has strange laws. Law enforcement over there spends a great deal of time on nothing while criminals go free.
Headed to NY today with my wife to show our grand daughter Manhattan and local sights. I packed 4 containers of pepper gel knowing I would have to throw one away at each metal detector. God, I would have felt better taking my .40 on the streets.
In reality more guns would mean more murders. The felons would shoot first rather than just demand money and citizens would be gunning each other down for just looking at the other guy sideways. Road rage would increase astronomically as well. It has already done so in other states were you can buy a second hand gun faster than you can buy a hamburger.
In many studies done when there were more guns on the street there was more murder and violence. Promoting more violence only shows how primitive, ignorant and sadistic the Far Right has always been.
We have now had at least 4 generations of people in the big cities grow up without a decent paying job. When a person feels hopeless and sees no future for himself they think nothing of committing violence and crime to get what they need. A hungry person is a very dangerous person. The easy access to second hand guns only fuels the violence and murder. Selling narcotics has become the only lucrative profession open to the working class in the big cities because there are no jobs that pay much over minimum wage and those are part time which only adds insult to injury.
Government retraining in Capitalvania is a fking joke compared to advanced industrialized nations. In Germany both the government and private industry spend millions retraining workers so they do not end up in the ump employment lines or on welfare. In Capitalvania the workers are considered troglodyte slaves and are considered expendable and to be exploited by the upper 1% whose income has increased 920% in the last 50 years while wages have stagnated for the troglodyte worker slaves.
The younger generation is well aware of the fact that their present day lives are no where near as prosperous as their grandparents and great grandparents were in the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. It seems to them almost a fairy tail story that housewives of that era stayed home and properly raised the children because the husband made enough money to support them.

I was scheduled to go to NYC this week to speak at a conference, but, I dislike that city and successfully connived someone else to cover the talk.
I am not going into a city that wants me unarmed but lets bad guys lose with no bail or wrist-slap sentences.
The traffic is horrendous and I refuse to mask which means I cannot use public transportation. The 1.5 mile drive from the Lincoln Tunnel exit to the Javitts Center parking deck can take 45 minutes. Ask me how I know.

I mean… this isn’t a great take. It’s a single-issue advocacy organization so I get it, but the ‘overtime’ issues in the NYPD are not due to gun control in NY, nor would they be reduced by lessening it. Take a look at Chicago. That was (previously) a city that had very overbearing gun control laws. They were changed significantly such that there are regularly (legal!) defensive shooting from citizens who own and often are carrying guns. The overtime issues there have not gone down at all- quite the opposite.
The overtime issues have to do, in part, with rising crime- but that isn’t easy to fix by just reducing gun control. Sorry, but “an armed society is a polite society’ is demonstrably hogwash (otherwise you wouldn’t have as many defensive gun shootings! Crooks are dumb). The more immediate issue, however, is that the pool of people who WANT to be (patrol) cops in blue areas and are not disqualified due to insanity is relatively small. Increased need and a lower supply of qualified applicants (who would be better off being garbage men) means overtime. “defund the police” is a very costly political statement.
Gun control has failed but the opposite isn’t a panacea to solve these issues (especially in places in NYC)- except on an individual basis. That is to say, less gun control would be unlikely to help with overtime but it would help citizens not get killed in the meantime. That’s a good enough reason for me.
Repealing the asinine jab mandate would help too, at least along the margins.
But that won’t be done for the same reasons.
Plus, keeping it ensures a nice, compliant, follow-orders-with-no-questions police force, which IIRC Bloomberg bragged amounted to the 7th largest private “army” in the world.
Adams is just DeBlasio 2.0 in most respects.

If the citizenry had maintained their right to self defense, NYC might well get along with fewer, expensive police officers. I was born, raised and lived for any years in NYC. Departed in 1967, never looking back.
