State Senator Danny Burgess, chairman of the Senate’s Judiciary Committee, introduced SB 1006, a crucial bill that would name strawberry shortcake as the official state dessert of Florida. Never mind that literally no one associates Florida with strawberry shortcake. But since Plant City (an area of the state apparently grows strawberries) is in of Sen. Burgess’s district, the bill became a priority.

All the while, a constitutional carry bill has yet to even receive a hearing in the committee it’s assigned to in the House and not a single Senator has bothered to introduce a version of the bill on that side of the legislature.

Back on February 3, Florida gun owners went to the capitol to make their voices heard. We presented signed petitions to Sen. Burgess’ office, asking that he introduce a constitutional carry bill mirroring HB 103.

So far our pleas have been ignored.

A recent tweet from Rep. Elizabeth Fetterhoff is a good indication of how important many in the GOP supermajority consider permitless carry in the Sunshine State.

Republican lawmakers constantly claim that they’re pro-gun…especially when they’re campaigning. They tell voters who ask about constitutional carry that “they tried, but the timing isn’t right yet.” As Master Yoda once said a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, “Do or do not. There is no try.”

It’s time for Florida to pass a constitutional carry bill.

  5. Florida is the largest supplier of winter strawberries in the United States and the second largest overall after California. The farm-gate value of Florida strawberries is approximately US$400 million and the total economic contribution of the industry is estimated at about US$1 billion.

    Now you know why strawberry shortcake is now the Florida state desert and constitutional carry languishes. The one with the money gets the most attention first, politics 101.

    • Plus, there’s no immediate downside to voting for strawberry shortcake. If you vote for constitutional carry, certain people are going to be very angry. They might remember it and stir up opposition because of it. Nobody really gets angry about a delicious dessert. They probably won’t remember that you voted for it, either. But if they do, it’s in the context of shortcake, strawberries, and whipped cream. Yum! So delicious…and what were we talking about before? I can’t remember.

    Your post jogged my memory on a bill that was introduced a few years ago to build a shooting range in a Park so that people would quit shooting just anywhere and endangering bird watchers and hikers besides shooting up glass bottles etc. It would also have had a safety range officer hired as well.

    To make a long story short the Democrats voted to pass the bill while the Republicans voted it down because they admitted they were to cheap and stingy to fund the project. Just another example when the Republicans screwed gun owners and of course its always totally ignored by the Far Right. The result was as expected the Republicans found it cheaper to shut down shooting in the park altogether.

      The local ranchers’ own Representative Kirk Chaffee (R-29/Whitewood) got up and said God, Guns, Country, and economic boosterism be darned, this shooting range plan was not ready for prime time. Likening the shooting range to a landfill, Rep. Chaffee said this additional government acquisition of land would burden Meade County with more trash, traffic, and law enforcement and disrupt the rural neighborhood.“

      If the Conservatives were willing to do the actual research required, they would see that the Republicans don’t give a shit about their Second Amendment rights and are just paying lip service in order to raise campaign contributions.
