From the offices of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, we learn that gun rights groups are working to block an egregious gun control bill in Washington State. The bill defines all semi-automatic rifles as ‘Assault Weapons,’ imposes a statewide tax and training requirement for owning one, makes possession of a handgun illegal for adults under 21, and gives the government open-door access to all data on gun purchases and transfers statewide with no parameters on how the information is used.

Here’s the full press release:

BELLEVUE, WA – State-level and national gun rights organizations confirmed today that they are unified in opposition to a sweeping Washington State gun control initiative that would strip young adults of their Second Amendment rights while creating a registry of gun owners, mandating a 10-day waiting period and signing away medical history privacy rights just to purchase a firearm.

The National Rifle Association, Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms and Washington Arms Collectors are united in their growing grassroots effort to defeat Initiative 1639, a 30-page maze of extremist gun control provisions.

NRA and the Second Amendment Foundation previously challenged the initiative’s validity in separate legal actions, winning initially in Thurston County Superior Court. That ruling was reversed by the state Supreme Court.

“We all recognize that I-1639 is a hodgepodge of gun control schemes, and we’re united in the effort to prevent it from passing and turning law-abiding citizens into criminals,” said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. “Gun prohibition lobbying groups based in New York and Seattle are using Washington State as a test tube for their insidious gun control crusade. We’re going to stop this nonsense before it spreads like a cancer to other states.”

“The six million members of the NRA enthusiastically welcome the Citizens Committee For The Right To Keep And Bear Arms and the Washington Arms Collectors to this fight,” said Chris W. Cox, executive director of NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action. “Washington gun owners deserve a coalition dedicated to defending their freedoms and the NRA is ready to lead the charge.”

“The Washington Arms Collectors joins the NRA, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, and many others who recognize that I-1639 has no public safety value,” said Bill Burris, WAC President. “We must all take a stand against this attack on our basic civil rights.”

Every penny contributed by Washington State gun owners to the campaign will be spent here, the groups assured. They note that the wealthy elitists backing I-1639 have already raised more than $4.3 million, most of it spent just to get the measure on the November ballot.

    • Actually, under this law you are mandated to invite the storm troopers into your home to inspect your gun storage in order to comply with the law and to own modern weapons.

As noted, no door-kicking at all.

        • I wonder what happens if you refuse the visit and/or if you insist on a search warrant. Does the door kicking begin?

Kinda interesting to issue an invite, then refuse the visit.

      • It’s not quite as bad as that. It is bad enough.

You aren’t mandated to let them in, but they are mandated to run yearly checks on everyone. If you haven’t re-upped your mandatory five-year training requirement, they could be knocking on your door…and what happens then is anybody’s guess.

  1. We shouldn’t need to defend a constitutional right at a ballot box. If the left decides to infringe on the other amendments will they be put up to a vote state by state?

    • Only in states where the direct initiative process is in place. In Washington, you can have any harebrained scheme you want, and if you hire enough signature collectors to get it on the ballet, it goes on the ballet. At one time this was probably a good idea, but with the preponderance of liberal billionaires residing in Puget Sound, it’s become a real hurdle.

The crap found in this initiative was defeated in the legislature last year, but any POTG who knew how the process worked was concerned that this exact scenario was likely to happen.

      • Yep. I could have told you (and probably did on TTAG) a year or two ago that we were going to see all that crap rolled up into an initiative, and here we are.

The initiative process in WA, unfortunately, seems tailor-made for special interests and moral panics to hijack the lawmaking process. Progressive groups bring crap like this to the legislature knowing there’s no way it’ll pass, priming the pump for a billionaire-funded direct-to-voters campaign later. This is exactly how they planned it.

    • Non-compliance if it does pass. Sanctuary counties? Come on Eastern WA, stand up and fight back against Seattle libs.

      • Yeah, we in the eastern part of the state ignore most of the west side approved laws. It doesn’t matter what we vote for, we don’t have the population the west side has. Whatever they want, gets voted in. So we ignore it, for the most part. Some things we can’t do anything about.

    • I had originally had the following for my retirement:

      • Colorado
      • Washington
      • Oregon

Needless to say, those didn’t work out 🙂

Ended up in rural northern AZ. Worked out well, but even AZ is now seeing the blue plague.

      • The blue plague is everywhere. Utah and Idaho seem to be least affected by it so far, but the locusts are swarming there too. Salt Lake City is awash in progtards.

      • May I suggest, to one and all, that if things become unbearable, the state of Indiana has plenty of room, and is friendly to POTG. As is Idaho. Kentucky. Alabama. Good luck to you and your family.

    • It’ll pass. What Puget Sound wants, Puget Sound gets. King County will probably vote 90%+ Yes on this, and that alone is most of the way to passage. The chances this doesn’t pass are essentially zero.

  2. It will almost certainly pass. And it will never be repealed. They’re working at the state level since federal was too big a hurdle. Checkmate.

  3. dhimmi-crats like this a lot. they indicated their willingness to submit to islam by requiring jizya/jizyah as a part of ebola-bama care, this is just another step for them.

  4. This law will make it illegal for 18-20 year olds to buy any semi-automatic firearm to include rifles and handguns. For example, 18-20 year olds will not be able to buy Marlin Model 60 semiautomatic 22LR with a tubular magazine. Yes, 18-22 year olds will be banned from purchasing even tubular magazine 22LR semiautomatics. The law is open ended allowing for increases in the cost of background check fees, home searches to check compliance and other infringements.

Under this law 18 year olds need to register for selective service where they could potentially be drafted into a Federal army, yet their RKBA will be restricted at the individual level so that they can not exercise their 2A right to own a modern firearm. There may be limitations in making this argument given State versus Federal law, but I would hope that this specific paradox would be argued in court and repealed in some way.

  5. I’m doing my part. I have a vote no I-1639 yard sign proudly hose clamped to my wire fence out by the street.
The second part I did…….OK, I did it just because, I just bought an AR Pistol in .300 Blackout last Sunday. I’m going to suppress that baby. The supporters of I-1639 can just blow me.

  6. This is what happens when you allow the LEFT to infiltrate and take over EVERY FACET OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT. They can pass whatever laws they want and turn cities into mini Socialist utopias.
