The founding father’s founded this nation with the intention of the people having power – not the government. The Bill of rights were rights guaranteed to the people that the government could not infringe upon. Nothing outweighs those rights. Countless people have fought and died for them (in more than just this country – and not succeeded). Here we already have them and we want to throw them away?? A rash of violence has nothing to do with the second amendment. The solution is addressing violence not the second amendment. Taking the guns away is not going to take the violence away.
From the 1798 Sedition Act to the War on Drugs to the Patriot Act, you’d think some generation or other would finally learn to turn a jaundiced eye on any claim that the abrogation of our rights is justified by this or that sensational event out of the news headlines.
There have always been sensational happenings and there always will be, because it’s part of our psychological makeup. If Sandy Hook massacres happened every day we wouldn’t consider them justification for anything. If murders virtually never happened, the killing of one gang-banger by another would make national news. Unless all events somehow had exactly the same emotional impact, some of them will stand out in our primitive brains and capture our imagination. We must consider our rights as withstanding the existence of such events or else they aren’t rights at all.
Yes, bad people use violence against others, so we should make it harder for good people to defend themselves. That makes perfect sense.

I have a friend who is a chemistry professor. This sounds like something he would say. On facebook, he responded to the fact that certain schools are getting bullet resistant white boards by saying, “It is better than turning our schools into armed camps.” I came within an inch of saying, “How is having a shield to hide behind while you wait for your turn to be blown to pieces better than being able to fight back?” Unfortunately, there is no arguing with idiots.

I agree entirely. The only effective defense against a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.
I would recommend two or three good guys (or more). That way they can provide cover, set up a crossfire, etc. to improve their chances of successfully neutralizing the bad guy, without suffering any casualties among the good guys or innocents.

That’s absolutely true – I didn’t think about that. After the gunman has murdered all the students and teachers he can take down a whiteboard and position them in critical areas where he can shoot at incoming security guards or police before killing hiimself.
The bulletproof whiteboards themselves aren’t a bad thing, but those *instead of* having an armed presence at the schools makes no sense. Those *in addition to* an armed presence at the schools would be great. They could potentially give a teacher additional time to draw their firearm.
FYI, if anyone is interested, a company that makes those is actually in Maryland, of all places. The demo on YouTube shows one of their clipboards stopping not only high-powered handgun rounds but also a 12-gauge slug from a shotgun.

There are some other local voices speaking up to challenge the silliness of mayors like the one in Fort Lee, such as the Golani Rifle & Pistol Club, quoted toward the end of the article:
Josh Levy, a member of the Golani Rifle and Pistol Club in Teaneck, said towns and cities were urging the adoption of bills without studying them or knowing what they’re about. Local officials also didn’t do enough to solicit citizen input before passing the resolutions, Levy said.
“What they’re doing is not only contrary to our right of self-defense and to the Constitution, but also to the spirit of self-government in which measures are proposed with time for debate and open discussion,” he said.
If a politician already knows what’s best for his constituents, and knows it’s a ‘common sense’ solution, why would he ask them for their input?
