Quote of the Day: One Toke Over the Line Edition

Michael Bloomberg courtesy gq.com

“To hear Mayor Bloomberg and NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly explain it, stop-and-frisk is a messy but invaluable tool used to keep weapons off the street. But an analysis of stops in 2012 confirms that the tactic is vastly more effective at generating marijuana arrests. The NYCLU [PDF] looked at last year’s 532,911 stops and found that while the NYPD recovered 729 guns, more than 5,000 people were arrested for marijuana possession. Indeed, marijuana was the top reason to be arrested during a stop in 2012, ahead of trespassing and criminal possession of a weapon.” – Christopher Robbins in Stop & Frisk Way Better at Finding Weed Than Guns [via gothamist.com]

  1. Even these pot arrests are rigged. The possession of small amounts of marijuana was decriminalized in New York in 1975, unless it is in “public view”. So the thuggish government employee tells the victim to empty his pockets. The victim exposes a small bag of marijuana and Presto Chango! It is in public view and the victim gets jacked up and kidnapped by the government employee.

All cops lie, all the time.

Disarm cops for a safer America.

    • And it’s “legal” for them to lie to trick people into getting arrested. The criminal “justice” system is inhabited by criminals.

    • This. And I was recently pulled over, without even committing a traffic infraction, by 3 unmarked vans, and 5 plain-clothes officers, removed from my car, and me and my car both searched without consent. It’s pretty bad here in the apple…

    • Demilitarize the cops generally. They shouldn’t be fighting wars on anything, they should be protecting and serving.

  2. bloomboy sure looks like a real party animal. How is stop & frisk even legal? Has this been through the courts? Randy

  3. Remember this next time you hear someone credit NY’s arcane and unfair gun control laws with it’s lowish crime rate. Ask them if they’re cool with the fact that statistically every black New Yorker “randomly” stopped and frisked more than once.

The price of safety is freedom and liberty, and those willing to pay it deserve neither.

  4. I like how the artist covered up the two phone books the little b!tch is sitting on

  5. I am slightly appalled that Dan was reading through Gothamist.

When I lived in Los Angeles I used to peruse the LAist to keep up on local events (parties, concerts, etc) but had to stop due to the overwhelming amount of collectivist garbage there. It IS impressive to see actual journalism on an “ist” site though, to be fair.

  6. Don’t kid yourselves this tactic is a moneymaker, likely right up there with the red light camera. As a bonus the Gestapo heads get to brag to the media about all the evil guns they steal from the little people. If all 729 guns taken from citizens were indeed bad guys I would say ny has a sheep problem! From what I hear only bad guys can have a gun in NYC.

  7. What the stop-and-frisk policy is really for is to instill a mindset into the public of “We control you.”

    • Mainly young black and hispanic men, but yes, it has had that effect. The cops as much as admitted it in the current legal case over stop and frisk.

  8. Stop and frisk is illegal. Taking guns from law abiding citizens is illegal. Do we see a pattern emerging under kapo bloomberg.

    • Definitely a pattern. What about his war on salt and the soda ban which the courts ruled against. Then there is also his demand to make all the cabs in NY hybrids. Courts ruled against him on that as well and what does this little tyrant do? He threatens their industry and vows to destroy them.

What’s this say about the people that continue to elect someone like this?

    • One study said that between 2002 and 2012 the NYPD made 440,000 arrests for simple possession. That used up close to one million man hours.

  9. Stop-and-frisk is a fascist policy. Plain and simple. It doesn’t matter if it “works”. Quartering soldiers in everyone’s homes to watch everything the do would “work” too.

  10. Mikey really is a little King George wannabe… Will enough of these people wake up to stop the slime they’ve elected? I hope so but I’m not holding my breath…

  11. It’s kind of stunning when you think about it, but our solution to armed gangs is to just sanction one heavily equipped gang to try to become king of the hill.

  12. Bloomberg is King Turd among so many others including the pretender to the throne in DC.

These old rich screwballs have nothing better to do so they make it their mission in life to screw with everyone else. No skin off this old windbags a$$ what anyone thinks of him.

  13. It’s scary how the violiation of individuals’ rights has been pushed to the limit if not over. Bloomberg and others like him are emboldened to enact laws and policies that are unconsitiutional. They are smug in their belief that they know what is good for others – meaning it doesn’t affect themelves in any way.

  14. Can we please end this BS “war on drugs” so that we can stop this incrementalism eating away at our rights? Nothing has done more to eat away at our freedoms than “the drug war” that will NEVER, EVER end. If someone can take $5 of coca leaves in Columbia, and then sell its refined product for $5000- there is NOTHING you can do to stop the flow. Legalize, tax, and regulate it, and leave my damned rights alone!!!
