Mossberg 940 Pro Turkey shotgun

I never thought I needed a turkey gun. I’ve hunted turkey, but I just used a standard shotgun and it seemed to work fine. However, I will say I am damn sure attracted to the Mossberg 940 Pro Turkey.

The Mossberg 940 improved upon Mossy’s 930 and it premiered just a few years ago in a 3-Gun style configuration. Since then the 940 has grown into its own line of firearms.

Gobble Gobble With the Pro Turkey

The 940 Pro Turkey is the latest and greatest in the 940 line, and SHOT Show 2022 gave us plenty of hands-on time with the gun. I didn’t know what to expect with the Mossberg Pro Turkey, but I figured it’d be worth checking out.

Boy, was I impressed. I can’t speak to its potential as a turkey gun, but I can say it appears to be one dang fine shotgun.

The spacers allow you to adjust the LOP easily enough. (Travis Pike for TTAG)

Let’s start from the back and work forward. First, the standard stock allows us to adjust the length of pull from 13 to 14.25 inches. That will accomodate just about any adult. The system uses spacers and is a very wise choice.

As we move forward on the gun, we find an optics cut in the receiver. This accommodates the Shield RMSc footprint, meaning you can toss a Holosun 507K on the 940, which is a perfect shotgun optic.

The optic sits low and works naturally with a good cheek weld on the gun. It sits so low that it co-witnesses with the fiber optic front sight that’s standard on the 940 Pro Turkey. The Pro Turkey comes with either an 18.5 or 24-inch barrel. Capacity is capped at 4 + 1 rounds, but you can easily expand the magazine tube.

Mossberg equips the Pro Turkey with an oversized charging handle and oversized bolt release for enhanced ergonomics, particularly when wearing gloves. The 940 Pro Turkey has a three-inch chamber as well as an enlarged loading port to avoid that old 930 finger pinch.

Why Not a Tactical Model?

A little birdie at the Mossberg booth told me to expect a tactical model of the 940 soon with an extended magazine tube and most of the features of the 940 Pro Turkey. This includes oversized everything, the optics cut, and most of the Pro Turkey’s features except for the vent rib, the fiber optic sight, and the camo finish. It’ll be aimed a little more at the home defense market than the turkey hunters.

That being said…I might just want an 18.5-inch 940 Pro Turkey with its sweet camo finish, vent rib, and fiber optic front sight for home defense. Put a mag extension on it, and it’s golden.

  1. An article like this really needs to include something that provides a definition of some kind as to just what a turkey shotgun is vs. a tactical gun.

    • turkey shotgun – designed for turkey hunting and has a specialized choke, either integral or interchangeable

tactical shotgun – has a pistol grip and accessory rails, essentially

  2. Thats a nice shotgunm . $1,000
My Social Security(its not meant to be a life style) cost of living raise just isn’t quite enough.
One thing they we’re right about though, the cost of living certainly has risen.

  3. My experience with wild turkey has been limited to the 101 proof variety, but I’m told turkeys are some of the wiliest game out there. Especially Osceolas.

    • Rookie, where I live we officially hunt Easterns, but they’re mostly hybrid Eastern/Osceola. (I think the line between the two splits the peninsula at Ocala, but the turkeys don’t know that.) Anyway, they’ll all make a fool of you. People say turkeys are stupid. Maybe they are. If so, they are damned lucky.

      • wild turkeys are wily (they’re filthy with them in the galena valley).
mom says domesticated turkeys drown in the rain.

    • Geoff, I had an old SWAT guy at the academy tell me years ago, “Paint it black, call it tactical and they’ll buy it.”

        A-yup.

But, hey, it was a fun escapism movie…

  5. A Pro Turkey shotgun? I have never shot a pro turkey. I’ve taken a few jakes and longbeards, but they were all amateurs.

  6. My Stevens 94b took a lot of turkey and turkey and cost me $30 used from my Uncle. Wish I still had it. Passed it to a niece years ago.

  7. Article mentions “you can easily expand the magazine tube” …. anyone know what exact item would fit? I contacted Mossberg, they referred me to 3rd party vendors, none of which had anything. The hyperlink in the article sends you to gunmagwarehouse, but no specific item.
