Last year’s virtual SHOT Show revealed the space age P50 from KelTec. If you’re not familiar with the P50, then you’re missing out. Well, you’re missing out if you like weird guns.
The P50 is this crazy, retro-futuristic 5.7x28mm pistol that uses P90 magazines. It’s a handgun, but a really, really big one.
Big handguns can be tough to wield. Short rifles are much easier. Thus, KelTec has released the P50 rifle conversion kit.
Make It Bigger
Now P50 users can convert their really big handgun into a rather small carbine. The drop-in stock and barrel allow you to better control the firearm and add a little range to the thing without much difficulty.
The barrel is 16 inches long, so there are no NFA worries. However, if you’re a stamp collector, it’s not exactly hard to SBR the gun either.
The wire-type stock of the P50 rifle conversion attaches to the pistol grip. It’s fairly simple and effective.
KelTec wisely made it a folding stock to help keep the size of your subgun down. The stock is essentially a metal pipe with some curves and a polymer butt plate. Nothing fancy, but it’s effective.
The barrel of the P50 rifle conversion is threaded and, well, it’s 16 inches. However, it still looks rather short. The P50 already has a 9.6-inch barrel. That big long barrel doesn’t look absurd like a lot of 16-inch barrel MP5s or similar firearms.
I asked the nice people at the KelTec booth about a brace, but that doesn’t seem to be on the menu. That being said, someone will surely come along soon and make one. KelTec firearms seem to be a favorite of the creative types.
Look for the rifle conversion kit later this year and plan to spend around $300 for it.

Any data on how much velocity is gained by the extra length?
Look at .22lr data for the answer.
But, being centerfire, could be better…
I thought .22mag would be a closer approximate.
Consider through the ruger 57 shoots about 2000 ft./s I’m sure this would add a little bit but not much.
Give me this action in P90 orientation (mag and barrel balanced over the grip, downward ejection through a chute behind the hand) and you have a deal!
That’s been done, it’s called a P90.
Thanks, but the P90 is 4.9″ longer, bulkier, about twice as heavy, twice as expensive, and unavailable as a pistol. IIRC, it’s also unavailable to civilians in factory SBR configuration.
I’m not disparaging it; it was incredibly innovative in 1990. 30 years later, however, Kel-Tec has managed to engineer a much lighter and more compact mechanism that safely handles the cartridge – but oriented it in a more awkward configuration.
I see nothing in the P50 action that would preclude re-designing it as I described, providing a better-balanced, easier to mount optics and reload, roughly 4lb non-NFA pistol with a folding or collapsing brace.
If the magazine is one the bottom, you can’t effectively bottom eject. If it’s on top, you can’t easily mount optics, because you have the magazine between the barrel and the optics.

If the magazine is on top, you can easily mount optics up front (with a rail rather than the P90’s proprietary optic). A full-length rail (and all the clutter that comes with it) is neither required nor desirable on a light, handy pistol.
I see a chassis in the future that makes the 16″ barreled version into a bull pup. Without the wire stock of course. Might be a fun, poor man’s P90 with better ballistics.
Who can afford 5.7 ammo? Price is right at a buck a round.

Kel-Tec is so innovative. I just don’t trust the manufacturing. In my perfect world they’d be the skunkworks for Ruger. Kel-Tec people would come up with the crazy designs, and then Ruger people would figure out how to build them.
