There’d probably be a lot less crime if store owners could rely on thieves to shoot each other during a robbery. That’s what happened at D&S Liquors in Colorado Springs Thursday. The proprietor noticed a yoot trying to lift a bottle of hooch and locked the front door so the little scumbag couldn’t get away. That’s when the gunfire broke out…

Another person waiting in the parking lot for the teen fired one shot in the front glass door of the store in an attempt to let the suspect out, according to the Colorado Springs police blotter.

But the bullet hit the theft suspect in the foot, police said. The suspect, who was not identified, was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Kudos to the accomplice for thwarting his buddy’s escape. And thanks, too, for being the beta demonstrator for a whole new paradigm in crime fighting – thief self-apprehension. There’s one thing I don’t understand, tough, about what the accomplice in the hoody was trying to do. Notice the bars on the door of D&S in the pic above? Maybe he was aiming for the lock.

And that brings up the only downside to this otherwise-promising model crime-stopping. Your typical felon displays worse marksmanship that your typical cop. There’s just too much opportunity for innocent bystanders to get shot for the law enforcement community to really rely on hoods plugging each other on a go-forward basis. Oh well. Back to the drawing board.

  1. Can’t imagine anyone displaying worse markmanship than a typical cop. Have you seen this story: http://blog.sfgate.com/crime/2011/09/17/bystanders-wounded-sf-police-shooting/?tsp=1&plckItemsPerPage=10&plckSort=ThumbsDescending&plckFindCommentKey=CommentKey:72653e30-239b-4e6f-ad2f-f16f6da2f37c

And that’s not counting how many shots get fired and innocent people get killed in NYC in order to put two non-lethal wounds into a suspect. The EPA should sue Bloomberg for lead pollution.

  2. “The proprietor noticed a yoot”

Next time I’m in Colorado, got to keep an eye out.

Can’t say I ever saw a “yoot” before.
