SIG SAUER Announces the New M400 Tread Predator Hunting Rifle

1. 16″ barrel for a dedicated predator gun? Swing and a miss there.

   • most guys arent going to use .223 or 5.56 beyond 3-400 yards anyway
     theyll use .223 valk or .220 swift or 22-250 or 204 or something like that
     the navy only used an 18 inch barrel in the mk 12 spr to shoot at people beyond 700 yards
     so 16.5 inches is going to be plenty enough barrel for most folks most of the time especially in a 5.56

2. 5.56 for what kind of predators? Wolves and coyotes, OK. Mountain lion, maybe. Bear, I don’t think so.

   • Most lions around here are shot from trees at distances which are adequate for rimfire or pistols. 223 Rem would be more than enough for that job.

3. The extra little boost in velocity isn’t worth the bulk of a longer barrel, seems like a good call to me. I also like the fixed stock and simple thread protector so it’s even easier to put what you want on.

   • If the goal is to kill predators at long distance, and extra 4″ on a gun that is focused on shooting from a still position is worth every bit of it. You’re not giving up anything and you’re gaining about 100 yards where the bullet will reliably expand.
     The 223 is a small diameter, lightweight bullet. Speed is what kills, and by leaving the barrel at 16 in, your neutering it, at least if the goal is to actually kill things far away.

       • First and most importantly, because they didn’t care about bullet expansion. Second, because you’re about 100-200 yards too far for what the DMR was designed for. Have you ever attended the squad designer marksman course? I have. Third, I see your SPR and raise you every Marine Corps M16A4 with its 20″ barrel.

   • Dude the .223’s claim to fame is velocity. Take that away and you’ve got a .22WinMag.

       • I don’t know where you’re getting this stuff, but you are way off. The M4 was not designed to shoot people at 500 yards. That is the maximum effective range. If it were designed to shoot people at 500 yards, the optic wouldn’t be a 1X red dot. Most engagements are under 300 yards. In fact most engagements in Iraq were under 100, hence the development of and use of the M4. But in Afghanistan, my team’s average initial engagement was at 400 meters. The M4 really sucked for Afghanistan, and we were all jealous of the Marines M16A4.
         The Army also did not care at all about bullet expansion, and most hunters do.
         Also, we had to carry our rifles up and down mountains in incredible heat for 10 to 15 km a day. That’s not what this Sig rifle is for.
         Arguing that an extra hundred feet per second on a small caliber lightweight bullet isn’t important doesn’t make any sense.

     • Sounds a lot like JWTAYLOR likes to apply his use to your use and explain how you’re doing it all wrong.

       I doubt the coyotes will notice the loss of around150 fps, less with heavy ammo, and I know my my hold overs so why do I need a Kentucky rifle again? I get that you wanted one in “the Stan” but I don’t think it’s for me personally.

       • Craig Boddington did an article quite a few years back, shooting a bunch of stuff in Australia I think it was, might have been Africa. Anyways, Craig was a big 06 fan but he said he could see an appreciable difference in the .300 WinMag and how much more quickly the animal was brought down.
         My experience with a .22LR Marlin bolt action. I thought I’d make they ultimate squirrel hunting rifle by cutting the barrel back to 16 inches from the 22 inches it had. , ,,, well I’ll be, the long barrel smacked them harder. We playing with SKS vs AK, yup the SKS will shoot further and hit harder.
         The short barrel craze helps the gunm manufacturers save money.
