Smith & Wesson is adding to their line of excellent M&P 2.0 pistols with a new, slightly shorter version of their popular carry guns, the M&P 2.0 Compact (see our review of that one here). The latest version has the same features — including the vastly improved 2.0 trigger — and capacity of the original Compact, but with a slightly shorter barrel…3.6 inches in this case. SPRINGFIELD, Mass., (April 30, 2018) – Smith & Wesson Corp. today announced that it has added a short- barreled version of it’s popular M&P M2.0 Compact pistol series. The newest in a series of additions to the M2.0 platform, the M&P M2.0 Compact 3.6″ pistols feature a 3.6″ barrel, the enhanced M2.0 feature set, and the highly desired magazine capacities of the M&P M2.0 Compact 4″ pistols.
Jan Mladek, General Manager of Smith & Wesson and M&P brands, said, “When we launched the M&P M2.0 Compact pistol series with a 4″ barrel last September, we knew it was just the first step in expanding the popular Compact pistol size offering. During the development process, there was considerable interest in a shorter, 3.6″ barrel concept, and with this introduction, we’re now able to offer our consumers a lighter, shorter compact pistol for concealed carry. While the barrel length is shorter, the M&P M2.0 Compact 3.6″ pistol maintains the 15 round, 9mm magazine capacity of the Compact series– an important requirement for many of our customers.”
Available with or without an ambidextrous thumb safety, the M&P M2.0 Compact pistol series includes the advanced M2.0 feature set, delivering an aggressively-textured grip, four interchangeable palmswell grip inserts, and a light, crisp M2.0 trigger with a tactile and audible reset.  The M&P M2.0 Compact 3.6″ pistol comes standard with a white-dot front sight and a white two-dot rear sight, and either a 15 round 9mm or 13 round .40 S&W magazine, and an accessory rail.  The pistol ships with two magazines, including two magazine extender sleeves for use with full-size magazines, as well as a limited warranty and lifetime service policy.

Dang it. I’m being kind too. Just bought a “2.0 Compact.” But the 4 inch one. S#^%:t They do this to me almost every time I buy a gun. D#^$^m it.
Yup – same. Finally broke down and bought the original, and they came out with the 2.0 like 2 months later.
Yeah, I don’t much care, though the 3.6 barrel would have been a more likely choice to start with, since it is 1/2 inch longer than the Shield. When I want to carry a smaller gun the Shield is what I go with in any case.
Some people just like having a double stack over a single stack.
Still no 10rd version for those of us living behind enemy lines.
2 round magazine extensions for 10 +1 capacity, 10 round clipazines are still legal in CA.
Quick search and I found 3 choices, sure there are more.
Increasing any mag capacity I would want to consider a longer spring.
I hated the size of the original M&P compact. It was like S&W couldn’t decide if they wanted it to be the size of a Subcompact or a Compact. I love the M2.0 Compact it’s the gun S&W should have made years ago.

Oh that is not fair. I already got rid of my full size M2.0 when the Compact came out. This is even more enticing… sigh… alas, I don’t think I’ll be trading/selling my Compact M2.0 to get the 3.6in variant, it’s just not worth the loss of money or the hassle but if I had the choice I think I’d go with the 3.6in from the get-go.
Kills me how nice this is for carry. But my M&P 2.0 needed an application of high grit sand paper to stop scraping my skin IWB. The texture on full size guns I understand, but it seems rather aggressive for a carry gun.
I solved that problem. A little surgical tape on the upper left side of the grip and frame. Then a Pachmayr Tactical Grip Glove. Now I can carry it in any IWB holster.
The real cure was getting an FNS-9C last week. Shorter grip, a few less rounds.
Still more then any of my 1911s.
We all should have bought a PPQ-SC. But I wanted the larger capacity. The FN comes with a 17 rounder too.
Heh. Yeah, I felt the 2.0 so-called compact wasn’t really compact enough to be worthy of the moniker. Folks actually preferred the size of the first Compact M&P.
Sometimes the perfect gun for a person is something old rather than new.

Meh. I hate this persistence of the long grip/short slide lately. I’m with most people who actually carry, and would far prefer it the other way around. And I’m still waiting on them to make a 2.0 in a true G26 size category. The original Gen 1 compacts weren’t bad, but I’ve always considered the G26 to be the perfect combination of compact size and capacity. At least until the P365 came about, undoubtedly created through dark sorcery.
Same here I’m a huge M&P fan but I would get a G26 before I’d get that gun I used to have a 1.0 compact but I hated the sized and ultimately sold it. I love the M2.0 Compact.

I can understand the want for a short grip/long slide pistol for carry on paper but in actual application the 3.6 M&P is just as easy to conceal with a proper sized grip and the shorter bbl doesn’t dig into me when I bend or sit down like the 4′ model does. Also I really like to get a full grip rather than just getting two fingers on there or having to put pinky extensions on all my mags.
I suppose we are all built a little different so what works good for one body type won’t for another so it’s good to have so many choices.

The older 3.5″ is awesome with a Hyve + 3 and grip tape and an Apex trigger. Nicely balanced and handles well like 2.0 C, but is more concealable and yet 15 rounds also! All it needs is a set of night sights and it is more versatile. With Apex trigger it is awesome.
