Philippine “President Apparent” Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III: Just Say Maybe to Gun Ban

“President apparent” is an odd moniker. But that’s how the press refers to Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, the son of former President Corazon Aquino. The Philippine presidential candidate, the nation’s proverbial “man of the people, has spoken out against the Philippine National Police’s looming decision to “extend” the country’s current gun ban past June 9. Speaking to philstar.com, Aquino “pointed out that the country only has 250,000 security forces to protect some 100 million Filipinos, noting that the population doubled from 50 million in 1986. Given this situation, Aquino said the response time – now covering bigger area and larger population – would be much slower. He also said he was not inclined to support total gun ban because the records showed that crimes related to licensed firearms comprised only one percent.” Not inclined?

Philippine Gun Ban is Go

As TTAG predicted, the Philippine government is moving to extend its temporary, election-related gun ban to infinity—and beyond! The state-dominated media is, surprise, lining up behind the idea. “We believe that the enforcement of the proposed gun ban would help correct the culture of violence and lawlessness and pave the way to peace and law and order in our country,” the inquirer.net‘s editorialist opines with Pollyanna purposefulness. And for those who consider a gun ban a method for an oppressive regime to limit opposition at the expense of political freedom and personal safety, the national paper offers some not-entirely-reassuring words. “Actually, what is being proposed is not a total gun ban but gun control, as explained by PNP [Philippine National Police] Director-General Jesus Verzosa and Pacheco himself. Verzosa said some persons will still be allowed to carry guns but under strict controls and conditions.” And now, death by stats . . .
