A loaded gun was found in North Carolina U.S. Rep. Madison Cawthorn’s carry-on bag at an airport security checkpoint Tuesday — the second time he has been stopped with a gun at an airport in the past 14 months, officials said.

When Cawthorn went through checkpoint D at Charlotte Douglas International Airport with the gun, a 9 mm Staccato C2, around 9 a.m., Transportation Security Administration officers notified Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers on standby in the area, TSA spokesperson R. Carter Langston said.

Responding officers identified the 26-year-old Republican as the owner of the bag where the gun was found, police said in a statement. Cawthorn acknowledged that the gun was his and cooperated with officers, authorities said. He was issued a citation for possession of a dangerous weapon on city property, a misdemeanor. Cawthorn was released but police held on to the firearm, as is routine.

The infraction is punishable by civil penalties, including a fine of up to $13,900 depending on certain factors, such as whether a firearm is loaded and multiple offenses, Langston said. In this case the firearm was loaded.

Langston said this was the second time in recent history that a gun was found in Cawthorn’s carry-on bag. The first was at an Asheville Regional Airport checkpoint in February 2021.

TSA officers have intercepted more than 1,800 firearms at checkpoints so far this year, Langston said.

A spokesperson for Cawthorn’s office and his campaign didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

    • even dirt bags retain the right to arms. The fact that we are denied that right aboard aircraft, and thus on the approaches to and pathways from commercial aircraft is immaterial.

IOf I cannot be trusted WITH a loaded gun aboard an airliner, why am I trusted aboard at all without a quailfied custodian??

Just think.. if passengers were “allowed” to carry their own perosnal firerams aboard commercial aircraft, the wlevelth September attacks would not have occurred. SOMEONE aboard each of those planes would have been able to intercept/interrupt the dirtbags trying to turn airliners into guided missiels. But then, that was part of the plot, right?

      • What a load of self justifying ballsocks. Nobody but an authorised Marshal should ever be allowed on any passenger carrying aircraft EVER. Apart from any other consideration Marshals carry modified weaponry with LOW VELOCITY ammunition designed NOT to penetrate the fuselage which could cause explosive de-compression especiallyn if they happened to hit a window. As for the 9/11 incidents. The ELEPHANT in room there is that AIRCREW were under specdific instruction not to allow anybody execpt rotated crew into the cockpit under any circumstance and to keep the doors locked at all times. If those doors had remained closed and locked then the ‘perps would NOT have been able to take over the controls.
IF as you say Passengers had had fireearms the very, very real possibility is the the airliners would have de-compressed anyway I am aware that it is not a very nice choice to have to moe or less abandon passengers and crew to their fate but that’s the choice the Captain has to make and that’s what he or she is bloody well paid for. Command has it’s responsibilities. You comment is typical of those who opeen their bloody gobs without giving due thoiught to potential consequences.
There are NO EASY ANSWERS TO COMPLEX QUESTIONS-EVER. Now of course those cabin doors WOULD remain closed and locked.
This guy is a complete and utter idiot of the first order and in most of the world would be serving, potentially a considerable prison sentence and rightly so!

        • 1. Marshals do not carry special ammo. Aircraft skin is thin out of necessity to keep the weight down. Anything low-velocity enough to avoid penetrating it would be of little concern to anyone shot by it.

          2. Aircraft can withstand a few bullet-sized air leaks without much trouble.

        • There was a episode of Mythbusters about aviation explosive decompression and firearms. When fired at a window all it caused was a slow leak.

A bomb on the other hand ripped open the fuselage.

Note the airframe was on the ground but pressurized to match the typical at altitude pressure differential.

        • You Sir, are either an idiot or an out and out despicable liar. And quite probably both.

        • Seems to me a lot of statements in this comment need to be fact checked. Here’s a couple “examples” I noticed off the bat.

          1. Site a source concerning bullet depressurization outside of Hollywood.

          2. Reinforced, Locked cockpit doors are a POST 9/11 security measure. In my opinion it was one of the better security decisions made post 9/11.

I read up on this congressman, he seems like an attention hungry rich kid, who has a hard time speaking truthfully. I’m sure he will have a long and successful career in Washington….

        • “…modified weaponry with LOW VELOCITY ammunition…”

Maybe in Euroweenie land, but not here. US Federal Air Marshals are in the process of switching from a mix of Sig P229s and P239s in .357 Sig, to Glock 19s with Sig ammo. Maybe across the pond they carry Bobcats with .22 shotshells, but not here. You, sir, watch too many movies.

        • Albert Hall you’re full of it. Fed Air Marshall’s carry Sig P226 in 357 Sig with conventional JHPs…a shooting buddy of mine is a FAM instructor.

        • I carry a P229 in .357 sig when I fly and the ammo I use is the Hornady LE load. Most pilots carry an HK in 40S&W loaded with the old school Federal Hi-Shock hp load.

        • Pathetic subject says what???

Piss off, subject, we stopped caring about your opinions back in 1776. Go tell your Queen she loves you, and ask her what your opinion should be.

      • They used box cutters. No one needed a gun to stop them. And that will never happen again.

I have been saying since 9/11/01 that it was a one shot event. Prior to that no one had hijacked a plane to fly it into a target. Hijackers always wanted transportation and/or hostages. We were told, constantly, to cooperate with hijackers until they surrendered, they got what they wanted and we were released, or we were all killed by hostage rescue teams, or we arrived in Iran and were turned over to the Iranian government, or whatever. So everyone cooperated, every time. On 9/11/01 everyone cooperated because of the decades of that training of the general populace. On 9/11/01 everyone got retrained that gun or no gun on either side, you damn well better do something other than put your head between your legs and hope for the best. No one will ever be able to successfully hijack a plane without resistance again.

Of course anyone and everyone should be able to carry on a plane and everywhere else. But it has nothing at all to do with 9/11 or terrorism.

        • “Prior to that [9/11/2001] no one had hijacked a plane to fly it into a target. Hijackers always wanted transportation and/or hostages.”
Did you forget about Air Franxe 8969?

Air France Flight 8969 was hijacked on 24 December 1994 by the Armed Islamic Group of Algeria (GIA) at Houari Boumediene Airport, Algiers. The terrorists murdered three passengers and their intention was either to blow up the plane over the Eiffel Tower in Paris or crash the plane into it. When the aircraft reached Marseille, the National Gendarmerie Intervention Group (GIGN), a counter-terror unit of the French National Gendarmerie, stormed the plane and killed all four hijackers.

  1. Daggum millennial/gen-z-cusp zoomer-boomer RINOS and their impotent yet tricked out 1911s. Bet he’s barely put a mag through it without first putting a bottle of maker’s through himself. Snot-nosed little brat.

  2. Article I, Section 6:

“They shall in all Cases, except Treason, Felony and Breach of the Peace, be privileged from Arrest during their Attendance at the Session of their respective Houses, and in going to and returning from the same; and for any Speech or Debate in either House, they shall not be questioned in any other Place.”

The Congressman can carry his gun if he is traveling to/from the US Capitol.

    • I wondered about this also. The charge is reported to be a misdemeanor, not a felony. Any attorney comments? From a legal perspective, should the charges go away?

      • Good question. I don’t know the answer, but I remember that Willie Brown used the California version of this provision to avoid speeding tickets he would regularly get while driving between San Francisco and Sacramento.

    • US congressmen cannot carry on an aircraft without special licence/ authorisation -you are misinformed. If they did receive licence they would be covered by the same regulations applicable to Air Marshals a regards both weaponry, ammunition and by the way TRAINING.

      • Albert the Subject,

Your ignorance, on virtually ALL issues, is quite stunning. It cannot be sheer coincidence and buffoonery . . . someone would actually have to try to be as complete a jackass as are you. Please follow the sage advice of one of MY countrymen, the late, great Samuel Langhorne Clemens: “Keep your mouth shut and let people think you a fool. Don’t open it and remove all doubt.” Sod off, swampy.

        • Lamp that went out in his head. Every time you bad mouth Albert about being a subject educated people are laughing at you. You are the actual subject and since you flunked history classes you only continue to make a fool of yourself.

Our American Revolutions denied us a Democratic government by the people, it denied us a parliamentary government which would have given us true democracy with multiple political parties. What we got was a corrupt Oligarchy that at first even denied the working man the right to vote. And when we got the right to vote it was given to us with the disingenuous left hand and and taken away immediately with the criminal right hand through gerrymandering and later the corrupt electoral college.

        • Every time you type your ahistorical nonsense, dacian the EXTREMELY stupid, all I get is that sound that Charlie Brown’s teacher makes in the Charlie Brown cartoons. You are too stupid to insult, dacian the clown.

Albert IS a subject; you are an ignorant, uneducated, pathetic, Leftist/fascist clown. You two deserve each other.

    • Friend of mine recently bought a Staccato. Nice weapon. Not sure it’s worth the $$$$, but it’s a nice weapon. Although I believe anyone who legally possesses a firearm should be allowed to carry it anywhere, that isn’t the law. Cawthorn knew that. Cawthorn was an idiot. Declare the gun, put it (UNLOADED) in checked luggage, and you’re all good. If I can’t carry on a flight, no reason for “politician privilege”. He does seem to give off the “spoiled rich kid” vibe.

  3. Up until the late 1960s, baggage at airports was not subject to inspection. Because of incidents of terrorism by communists and low-life scumbags, a Federal law was passed to subject passengers to warrantless searches of their persons and bags. The Supreme Court upheld the law. So began the long slide in government chipping away at our liberties.

The transportation environment would look very different had our rights been upheld.

      • 100% Those willing to sacrifice liberty for safety deserve neither. I would be happier of everyone on the plane was armed….

    • Since at least 1934, that chip…chip…has been a growing staccato…..article gun pun intended…..into a Jack Boot beat. Demoturds implementing 2A infringing gun control initially for blacks since Civil War. We have trained the Demoturd freedom infringers that it’s OK to infringe. Go ahead, we might grouse, tap keyboards vigorously, huff and puff, but really nothing else. You are safe and unaccountable for your infringements. Have fun. Maybe time for round 2 to free all……blacks again, whites for once and all. The Tree of Liberty thirsts…..

Ole Forrest Gump’s meme had it all pegged, “In 1776, the British demanded we surrender our arms. We shot them.” Patriots today aren’t even as smart or patriotic as a movie simpleton. And, that Boys and Girls, is the WHY ATF infringements march on.

    • Yup I remember flying back then. Walk up to the ticket counter, tell them where you want to go, they quote a price for the ticket, you whip out a small pile of bills, tell them off the pile, they give you a ticket and change, tell you what gate to head off to, and you’re done. Friends and pet dogs can come along wiht you right up to the ramp. No one looked at anything. The guy who sold yu the ticket had no idea weven your first name. Did not patter. Sorta like buying a hamburger today. Except the twennydollah you dropped for the ticket is a far better value then the Jackson yu have to drop for a lousey burger today.

and guess what? Airplanes got wheree they were scheduled to go pretty much on time and life went on. NO ONE was trying to ssteal them. And if anyoe HD tried to do that, the passengers aboard would have dealt with it. Prolly a few of them did carry handguns along wiht, as they did everywhere else , even in California.

Now gummit have taken total control, its all bizarre and horrible. And then along come de covidiocy, which made it so bad I have not flown since before that madness overranus all (because we let it).

      • Actually, there were a few years in there where hijacking for ransom was “a thing.” We eliminated the hijackers that seized planes, and that seems to have discouraged any others (mostly). Also, in my opinion a gun fight at 35,000 feet with a plane full of passengers is a recipe for disaster.

        • Is a gunfight at 30K ft better than flying into a building at 400Knots? Most likely yes. Those folks that tried to take back the airliner that ended up flying into the ground and killing them all, considered the possible loss of their lives a better sacrifice than going like sheep to the slaughter.

  4. If you are going to fly commercial you have to play by the rules of others. Insane rules that place you in a tube with no way out and leave your life in the hands of those piloting the plane which could be to anywhere. I have no problem with the congressman carrying but being asked once not to do that should have been enough. I know nothing about him, some make him look like a mini mitt romney and if that is so he needs to go.

    • I cut young Cawthorn a bit of slack being in a wheelchair. A bit. He’s not a RINO. He’s a dumbazz…

      • Slap head!!! My bad…..thought he was in wheelchair because he lost his wheels, not his brain. Slap his ass hard. Slap “80% reporter” hard. Slap “DC 30 round mag reporter” hard. Slap “4473 liar Hunter Biden” REALLY HARD…bet he likes pain. While slapping Bidens, slap Sniffy-Silly Biden hard….see if he wakes up. Slap ’em hard like We The Little Peeps would experience. If Cawthorn experiences enough legal/financial pain, maybe he will at last start a political “insurrection” against the tyranny in government.

    • Let the enemy write the rules.
      Play by the enemy rules,
      Lose by the enemy rules….
      That is all.
      Class dismissed……

  5. Its not well known but when the 1968 Gun Control Act was passed Howard Metzenbaum exempted all the Congressmen from it. They could even buy machine guns without going through the NFA check or paying for the tax stamp.

When a security weapons checkpoint was established last year or so at the Capitol Republican Congressmen simply refused to go through it and walked around it. An ordinary citizen would have been arrested on the spot and probably executed on the spot with a shot to the head as well but not Congressmen as they can get away with just about anything.

Remember the Congressmen do not obey any laws they create them or make them up as they go along for everyone but themselves. They obey no gun laws, pay no taxes, break speed limits, often get away with sexual harassment or even sex with underage teenagers, often get sweet heart deals in the stock market and often get advanced inside information before a stock market down turn or crash and they get away with all of it and lobbyists give them millions in bribes to protect the upper 1% (the Capitalvanians) so they can bankrupt the proletariat who have no protections.

The U.S. government was from its inception designed from day one to run on corruption.

    • Summary field execution? That’s called murder. Being a fascist I would expect that to be you answer.

And all that corruption you say and you still want to give them the power to disarm us. You truly are mentally ill.

    • In the Marxist utopia you so lovingly pine for this is exactly what would be normal. The elites will have privileges while the rest toil.

    • Howard Metzenbaum, eh, dacian the stupid????

      “METZENBAUM, HOWARD MORTON (4 June 1917 – 12 March 2008), a staunchly liberal U.S. Senator . . . ” One of yours, dacian the stupid, another Leftist/fascist, authoritarian @$$hole. Just like you.

  6. Young man, you oughta be more careful, or get a cheaper gun. Safety and legal aspects aside, that there is not a disposable firearm.

      • Unfortunately, much like Cawthorn, dacian is too stupid to be “troubled” by his own idiocy. He THINKS he’s smart (his mommy obviously told him he was ‘special’, and he thought it was a compliment). Dacian is a moron, studying to be an idiot . . . and failing.

  7. Hit him the maximum penalties. I wouldn’t have got a walk off the first time.

  8. Not impressed with this guy…surly the people of his district can find someone who isn’t an id10t to represent them. Sure we need more real 2A Republicans and yeah we need rid of the RINOs, everyone on this site can name at least one. Flying with firearms can be a pain, but it isn’t rocket science and there are plenty of how to videos that even this goof could have used.

    • Looks like Word Press has dialed up their wokeometer to 11. No doubt because of Musk. The left really loves to use moderation to limit speech they don’t like.

      • Their ultimate goal is to cancel heretical thoughts by canceling the heretics. So only the true thought remains.
