Despite what some TTAG staff and members of my own family may have thought, I was not in Afghanistan and I haven’t been there in a decade. I wasn’t part of the Pineapple Express, and to be honest I’m not completely sure what that is. I am not special forces and definitely not one of the cool kids.

I was teaching emergency rescue techniques in South Africa to the local tribal anti-poaching units and when I came out of the bush late last week I found out about all that was happening in Afghanistan. I was in pure disbelief.

I was so sure that what I was hearing was internet make-believe that I called people who happened to be there on the ground in Afghanistan to confirm. They confirmed it was not as bad as I was hearing. It was far worse.

Since then, I’ve been assisting with the extraction of American citizens and their families. That assistance has included providing information directly to, and getting briefings directly from, the Americans and their families who are on the ground in Afghanistan.

Based on what I heard on the radio on my way into town this morning, there is a good deal of misinformation on the regular news channels. I say misinformation because it is contrary to easily verifiable information from sources on the ground throughout the country of Afghanistan.

I can verify a few things.

There are still American families trapped in Afghanistan. I know this because I spoke with them myself this morning. Some of these people passed up earlier opportunities for escape through civilian operated means. They did this at the express instructions of the US government, which told them that Special Operations Forces were on the way to take them to the Kabul airport.

Instead of taking the much longer and more dangerous routes provided by incredibly brave American civilians, they chose to believe their government would provide them a safer, shorter path. The US government did not pick them up, and stopped communicating with them, in effect abandoning them. I have directly verified this information.

There are still thousands of Afghans who worked for the US government and US military who are trapped in Afghanistan. I can’t verify all of them, but I can verify some through direct communication.

They simply had no way to safely get to the Kabul airport and get out. This is especially true for unaccompanied women and their children whose husbands have already been killed while they were in hiding. These surviving families are being targeted and hunted. I have directly verified this information by talking to them, one as late as last night.

The path out of the country for these people has become much more difficult and dangerous over the last 12 hours and it is about to get worse. Internal division among the Taliban is currently limiting their ability to effectively cordon and search major population centers.

Taliban command and control has rapidly improved over the last day. Some Taliban checkpoints that were simply taking payments to allow people through only a day ago are now searching vehicles, checking phone numbers, and executing those with American contacts in their mobile phones. I have verified this information through multiple direct witnesses on the ground, including survivors of these checkpoints.

The Afghanistan withdrawal is one of the biggest debacles in modern American military history. The withdrawal has exposed failures throughout the command structure the likes of which I never thought that I would see, and certainly never want to see again.

If you want to know what can be done about it, demand transparency and accountability from your government. That’s the very least Americans should expect.

  1. This current situation has caused me to have what I believe are flashbacks. Disbelief is a mild word. It brings back raw and painful memories.

      • We were not defeated. Politicians failed the troops and the US, as well as the people of Afghanistan. People praising Biden to “have the balls to withdrawal” just did the exact opposite of what they preached for an entire year in 2020, they killed people. We did our jobs there. We did all we could do. Sad truth is, the afghan people never had it in them to keep their country anyways, but every nation involved since almost 100 years ago is the cause of all this too. US just had the most involvement, and the politicians currently waving the white flag are to blame.

        • Yeah, pretty much like South Vietnam. People keep saying it’s not, but there are too many details that are similar or identical, and contribute to the same result. The fall of South Vietnam could be a playbook for how to betray an ally that depends on the US for it’s survival.
          The biggest difference is that Afghanistan is completely surrounded by nations that are unfriendly to the US and will be hostile to Americans or Afghans who helped the US. South Vietnamese could escape by the ocean although that took about forty percent of them.

    1) this does not mean the end of anything. It’s a transition for sure but if you think it’s over…it’s not.

    2) was it a war? Was it a conflict? Was it an occupation? As ‘war’ was never officially declared then what was it?

    I’ve been telling you guys that we ARE at war. Is it so absolutely necessary that an official declaration be had? Perhaps we’ve been at war so long that we forgot. Maybe war is so distasteful that no one wanted to acknowledge it.

    But what was it that actually happened that brought all this about so quickly? 20 years there and 2-3 weeks to leave? Why not make the troops the last to leave? Why not ACTUALLY USE all that hardware to protect civilians and non-coms as they exited? Biden says it’s Trumps agreement but Trump is NOT in charge. Biden can make any changes he wants (as we so obviously saw).

    I do not place any blame with the boots on the ground at all. But there is a chain of command that obviously capitulated. If this is the new armed forces of cowardly leadership then what is there to compel anyone to join?

Chris Donahue, the last man scampering up the ramp of a C-17 in a night vision shot, likely staged, I am reminded of Gen Douglas MacArthur walking down the ramp of a landing craft onto the beach at Leyte, also almost certainly staged. Boy things have changed for us mightily. The iconic photo for the era becomes one of evacuation as was Saigon’s money shot of the CIA helo on the rooftop at 18 Gia Longstreet. To be sure MacArthur had his own evacuation shot on a PT boat from Corregidor two and a half years before but the salient thing is what is remembered as iconic is his wading ashore on Leyte island.

    The Kabul fiasco is such a colossal dereliction of duty for the President and the flag rank yes men he that he surrounded himself with I am almost sure that they will all be decorated in an effort to whitewash the sad affair. This will be the ultimate degrading fig leaf they will employ to divert the investigations and attention this affair truly warrants.

    • I don’t think that level of incompetence is really possible, but that would mean it was intentional. On the other hand, the administration seemed to treat this as a low priority. Their main priorities since they came in was opening the borders, growing the government, and setting the stage for a ludicrous level of spending. It’s almost like this was an afterthought.

      • I have trouble seeing it as anything besides an extension of the Osama/Bidden administration, which for the last 6 years of which I discovered that I could predict the response to any situation by imagining what I would do if I were actively and deliberately trying to destroy our nation, and that admin (as now with Biden’s) would do exactly that every time. It is simply not possible to be that stupid, that incompetent. It is deliberate, and I believe the goal is to prepare us for a communist insurrection similar to China or Russia.

He announced they would stay beyond the May deadline. This gave the Taliban extra time to march their way into more control of the country. It’s Joe’s deal now. “But Trump!” isn’t a valid excuse.

The Biden administration did not allow these families to immigrate, it was not safe for them to leave the country, and they waited on his promise to get them out. They had ways to get out but the administration specifically told them to wait and to count on a US government rescue. And then he abandoned them.

And using the term “transferring weapons” is exactly what happened. Most Americans don’t understand the gravity of the situation in Afghanistan and the future implications for the United States and international relations.
