“A Tennessee state lawmaker who was the lead sponsor of a law allowing handgun concealed carry permit holders to bring their guns into bars has been arrested on charges of drunken driving and possession of a gun while under the influence,” the AP reports. “Rep. Curry Todd, a Collierville Republican, was pulled over in Nashville late Tuesday, police say in court documents. He allegedly failed a roadside sobriety test and refused to take a Breathalyzer test. A loaded .38-caliber gun was found in a holster stuffed between the driver seat and the center console.” Stuffed? Maybe it was placed there carefully. But one thing gun rights advocates do know: this sucks. But hey, at least he didn’t shoot anyone.
I don’t think this is a larger indictment of gun rights. The TN legislature voted for the bill, he may have been the sponsor and incredibly stupid of him to do this, but it does not call into question a law that the other lawmakers voted for.In other news 68 million gun owners didn’t drive drunk with a loaded gun in their car and refuse to be tested when caught.
This just proves what I have said all along-politicians and government officials in general can not be trusted with firearms. Only private citizens should be allowed posses guns.
Recently an alcoholic cop in Dc shot a citizen off duty in a road rage incident. People are human.
I got into an interesting conversation with a friend about guns and alcohol, two things I am particularly fond of. Right now I rely on discipline and a series of locks between my rifle and drinking buddies to keep other drinkers from making poor life decisions.
Articles like this are just a little redundant in my eyes because they are isolated incidents that prove nothing. Let me change the context just a little with things I’ve seen.
Let’s say you see a guy walking around drunk with a baseball bat. Hasn’t hit anyone, is angry looking but goes home. Are you going to look for sanctions on sporting goods?
Or drunk drivers. That is a favorite as they will drive on sidewalks on offramps to go the opposing way down the highway but they don’t check to see if you’ve got a drinking history at a car dealership; they just sell you a car. They don’t put sanctions on your ownership after the fact, just your license. Which leaves drunk drivers to drive illegally with cars unseized by the government even if they caused bodily harm or death.
No, riding with a loaded gun while wasted is NOT a good idea. I would never condone such. Me drunk is the only time I’m unarmed. Only then around people I’ve taught to shoot that I trust.
My point is articles like these are used by those who desire gun control sanctions as ammunition to purport these instances as the rule not the exceptions to it. That is what’s crap.
“sanctions on sporting goods” doesn’t really follow. We don’t call for sanctions against guns. We want stronger controls on who can own guns and where they can carry them. That’s different.
You see, whenever you guys try to make comparisons, you fail.
All the spinning, like “he didn’t kill anyone” and all the downplaying of this incident, like it’s ONE incident, is bullshit. The irony of this particular guy getting busted breaking the law is priceless. Surely you can appreciate that. And far from being in isolated incident, this is illustrative of a widespread problem. Drinking and guns don’t mix. It’s worse than stupid. And the fact is not all gun owners are as scrupulous as many of you seem to be.
By the way, on my blog Jadegold and the others supplied all the possible pro-gun responses to this. It’s really pretty funny. They were much more imaginative than you guys.

Ted Kennedy’s driving killed one passenger and he went on to pursue a long career as a political thug depriving Americans of their liberty. This man’s actions, while absolutely wrong and should never be repeated, harmed no one.
