The Trace’s “about” page describes the website as an “independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit journalism startup dedicated to shining a light on America’s gun violence crisis . . .We rely on generous readers to ensure we have the resources required to fulfill our mission.” It’s a bald-faced lie . . .

The Trace is owned, operated and financed by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg; a billionaire who’s spent tens of millions of dollars supporting pro-gun control political candidates. The Trace is entirely dependent on Mr. Bloomberg’s money for its existence, and it’s completely partisan, doing everything it can to promote its owner’s civilian disarmament dreams.

Old news in these parts, where we spend a good part of our editorial effort fisking their lies and obvious misdirections. But it’s worth highlighting again today — if only because The Trace is so sneaky about hiding its agenda. Here’s part of their post Quiz: How Much Do You Know About Gun Violence in America?

The Trace’s “died by firearms” stat includes suicides. In fact, more than half of all firearms-related fatalities in the U.S. are suicides.

When someone kills themself with a gun, they die by their own hand, not “by firearms.” Unless you want to paint it that way. Which is why the question itself covers up the suicide component, clearly implying that all 35k were “shot” by someone else.

Once again, The Trace conflates children shot and children who shoot themselves. If we follow the link in their answer, we learn that “gun homicides among children 17 or under have declined 36 percent since 2007, but gun suicides have increased 60 percent.”

So how many Americans aged 17 or under are shot and how many shoot themselves? Another question: how many of those “children” who “are shot” are involved in gang-related criminal activity?

You see how this works? The Trace is an anti-gun rights propaganda machine masquerading a legitimate news source.

They have one mission: to generate support for civilian disarmament. Even if it means distracting Americans from real solutions to real problems, such as tackling adolescent suicide from a mental health perspective. In other words, even if people die as a result.

  1. Didn’t Shannon watts on live TV proclaim 2 million people are killed each DAY by gun violence? At least I think it was her. About a year ago I remember some anti gun air head made a comment like that.

    • Speaking of which, why do these sorts of reports NEVER include the gross number of people who are shot, other than suicides, but who do not die from their wound(s).

This is almost as egregious an obfuscation as never reporting those criminals who were NOT shot because they were at least bright enough to run away at the sight of an armed victim.

  2. From an earlier article on TTAG, the children statistics includes “children” from 19 to 24 years old. The greater portion of the total numbers being over the age of 18.

  3. When you cut down the “gun death” figure and eliminate suicide and gang violence you end up with about 2,000 homicides. That means as an average citizen there is a 0.00006% chance of being impacted by “gun violence”.

They also like to state if you own a gun you are X number of times more likely to be killed by it than use it for self defense by using a simple average to state a suburban mom has an equal risk as a gang member. In reality gang members are 19 times more likely to be killed by someone using a gun and drug dealers are 6 times more likely. Average that with the near-zero value for an average citizen and you get their stat.

They also dismiss self-defense by only citing justified homicides and not even considering a situation with no deaths or injuries, which are the majority of self-defense cases. There’s also a Harvard “study” that counters Kleck’s 1997 work by simply extrapolating the other way and interviewing a handful of inmates at one prison and extrapolating from that to hundreds of millions of people.

With their methods you can’t even call it science. It would be a stretch to call it an opinion.

I write on Quora and it’s astonishing what people will believe. It only takes a few Google searches to know better, but they keep quoting the Trace and other clearly anti-gun and obviously wrong sources.

  4. You can expect nothing but lies and deceit from the political party of rapists, robbers, narcotics dealers, and murderers…

  5. Whaaaa…… Gun Control Supporters are using lies to promote their agenda?

I am shocked—shocked—to find that lies are going on in here! Next you’ll be telling me there is gambling going on at Rick’s Cafe.

  6. “Figures often beguile me, particularly when I have the arranging of them myself; in which case the remark attributed to Disraeli would often apply with justice and force: “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.”

    Mark Twain…

    • There seems to be some (Internet) controversy over whether it was Disraeli or Twain who coined this phrase. The men were contemporaries and Twain traveled extensively during the period giving humorous talks all around the world to English speaking crowds.

My money is on Twain who was more often known to make intelligent and humorous remarks then Disraeli, who may have repeated it but most likely did not coin it.

Remember, A lie can travel around the world before the truth can get its boots on. (Mark Twain, maybe)

  7. Don’t forget, in those “children” shot are 17 yr old drug dealers and gang members killing each other over turf wars, etc.
