In America, they’re called “gun buybacks.” Technically, they’re not buybacks. The police, politicians, gun grabbers and corporate do-gooders perpetuating this brand of security theater – where Americans turn in broken-ass guns for cash, gift cards and/or kudos – never owned the guns in the first place. So it’s really a “buy-up.” Of course, “gun buy-up” doesn’t have the same PC ring to it. In fact, the term hints at the truth of the matter: the “no questions asked” buyback folks are creating a black market for stolen guns. Anyway . . .
The Brits aren’t buying “buy-ups” or “buy-backs.” For the Land of Hope and Glory it’s a “Gun Surrender.” “From Monday the force is holding a two-week amnesty for people to surrender unwanted items,” staffordshirenewsletter.co.uk reports. It comes after new legislation came into affect [sic] on July 14 increasing the maximum jail term for illegal gun possession . . .
from 10 years to life. This now includes anyone who is storing a weapon for someone else. It also includes antique firearms amid fears obsolete weapons can be made viable by criminals with ballistics know-how . . .
Police believe many firearms may be held in innocence and ignorance of their illegality or may be overlooked or forgotten in people’s homes. The campaign gives holders the chance to dispose of the firearm and ammunition safely by handing it in at a police station.
During the two week period, those surrendering firearms will not face prosecution for the illegal possession and, if they wish, can remain anonymous. However, the history of each live weapon will be checked for evidence of its use in crimes.
There are those who say that surrendering a “live weapon” = “the death of personal liberty.” As Annie Lenox sang, who am I to disagree?

If people don’t know they are in possession of illegal weapons, how are they supposed to know to turn them in? Is there an accompanying flier campaign where they paper the city with notices? Is a boy scout troop going around, knocking on doors and informing (on) people? Dammit, the more I think about it, the more I realize that the only good idea to come out of England in the last 25 years was a good recipe for fish n chips.
Stop being logical – this isn’t about logic, it’s all about appearance.
They do have damn fine fish and chips. And if there’s another place to get good mushy peas, I haven’t found it yet. Good curry too. Many reasons to visit the UK, but not a place to live at this point. Who knows, maybe they’ll turn it around eventually. There are some whispers of sanity on the British political scene these days. Just whispers, but we can hope.
In the mean time, I’ll hoist a pint of bitter in salute to what they once were and might be again if they come to their collective senses.
I don’t think they will get it turned around until the Islamic population erupts over there and then it’ll probably be too late.

Fortunately, it is really unlikely the US would ever get to this point. Just looking at the massive non-compliance with registration laws in CT and NY (though the Cuomo administration is doing its level best to cover it up by denying FOIA requests) should be a clue.

The best part, however, is that the cops do their investigation whether the gun was involved in any crime and then they give it back to you if you still want it. You can get it back either disabled or, if you are firearm license holder, you can get it back fully functional & legalized (which may require other approvals , but the possibility is there).
At least the Brits have the decency to call it what it really is.
