If you read the Vox article in full, this dose of “truth” comes packaged in all of the usual misdirects, exaggerations, inaccuracies, and lies. It’s an argument for a national licensing scheme along the lines of: “we’re gonna need a bigger infringement.” The article also claims (based on survey data of incredibly dubious quality) that a national licensing scheme is supported by an overwhelming majority of the public. I wouldn’t get too excited about anything Vox vomits out into the public sphere. It has about as much real value as actual vomit.

The left needs to be more specific: how can we prove which guns are violent and which are not? I suggest we set up a big table and put on it a sampling of every gun sold in in this country. Then, we set up cameras and lock the room; no one allowed in. We will then be able to observe and record which of those guns become violent. We can, then, provide that information to the manufacturers so they can cure those weapons of their innate violent nature. Simple, right? No new laws needed. Plain and simple science
I already have done that… a quick check of the gun safes has never found any guns that escaped and went on a spree without me (not even the “ghosts”, unless they’re firing undetectable ghost rounds). I have noticed that they are becoming anxious to get out for more regular exercise though.

California has had universal background check for all hand gun sales since 2000. It hasn’t affected the crime rate, as the VOX article admits. Many of the second hand sales to which you refer are illegal sales that would not be swept up with a universal background check law. Do you really think that a gun trafficker is going to start doing background checks on the guns he/she sells to gang bangers? Or have any effect on the sale of stolen firearms? Your own argument reflects that there are people who are evading background checks because they will not pass, and they still will not pass even with a universal background check law. Straw sales will continue. Black market sales will continue to occur, just as they have been occurring for many decades. Crime, and especially violent crime, will continue, just as it has for millennia.
