Because they decided they need them shoot, hunt, compete, protect themselves and deter tyranny. And because it’s their right to do so. Unfortunately, Joe Biden was unavailable to comment.
The NSSF’s Mark Oliva tells us that . . .
Over 1.3 million background checks were conducted for sale of firearm in February, holding steady with figure from one year ago. This is demonstrative of a steady appetite for Americans from all walks of life exercising their Second Amendment right to lawful firearm ownership. Certain politicians choose twisted narratives to demonize firearm ownership instead of confront the criminal elements in our communities. Figures likes these, month-after-month, show us that Americans reject that rhetoric and are choosing to protect themselves and participate in the rich heritage of the shooting sports.

The February 2023 NSSF-adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) figure of 1,343,593 is a decrease of 0.6 percent compared to the February 2022 NSSF-adjusted NICS figure of 1,352,105. For comparison, the unadjusted February 2023 FBI NICS figure 2,502,385 reflects a 0.5 percent decrease from the unadjusted FBI NICS figure of 2,514,818 in February 2022.
February 2023 is the 43rd consecutive month that has exceeded 1 million adjusted background checks in a single month.
Please note: Twenty-four states currently have at least one qualified alternative permit, which under the Brady Act allows the permit-holder, who has undergone a background check to obtain the permit, to purchase a firearm from a licensed dealer without a separate additional background check for that transfer. The number of NICS checks in these states does not include these legal transfers based on qualifying permits and NSSF does not adjust for these transfers.
The adjusted NICS data were derived by subtracting out NICS purpose code permit checks and permit rechecks used by states for CCW permit application checks as well as checks on active CCW permit databases. NSSF started subtracting permit rechecks in February 2016.
Though not a direct correlation to firearms sales, the NSSF-adjusted NICS data provide an additional picture of current market conditions. In addition to other purposes, NICS is used to check transactions for sales or transfers of new or used firearms.
It should be noted that these statistics represent the number of firearm background checks initiated through the NICS. They do not represent the number of firearms sold or sales dollars. Based on varying state laws, local market conditions and purchase scenarios, a one-to-one correlation cannot be made between a firearm background check and a firearm sale.
Don’t think I have bought any yet this year. I don’t remember when I got the 43X and 48, but I’m pretty sure it was last year. In fact I am probably going to sell 3 pistols this year. The only things I will be buying going forward are milsurps, which I collect, and maybe more G43X’s or G48’s. I am pretty well set for everything else. Now parts and ammo and accessories? Yeah I’ll be buying a lot of those.

These articles bug me no end, in the way they celebrate using a process we never should have in the first place, and to which the average American has become conditioned to accept. BGCs are the Government’s assumption of your guilt and the requirement to prove your innocence via a process of Government’s choosing before Government allows you to exercise a right the Government’s own foundational document mandates it must not hinder.
I mean with the right lawyers and enough money paired with grounds to bring suite.

I have the 1873 Winchester also…love it…EXCEPT, the 1873 action is very dependent on COAL. Most factory .38 Specials do not reliably feed (usually jam). It feeds and shoots .357 Magnum length cartridges perfectly. I have two loadings I use: one for “plinking” – essentially a .38 Spl in .357 case and a full power .357 with 158 gr RNFP’s from X-Treme Bullets. I’m not counting whatever factory .357 loads I may have sitting around.
Have a Marlin 1895 from the Remlin years but thus far feeds and extracts fine so probably fine. I just have an older more obsure press that does not have shell plates compatible with the 45-70 and it looks like longer term it would be cheaper to get a turret press than try to commission the oddball shell plates I will need going forward. Lever action 357 are fairly rare up my way at the moment (44 magnum as well) so revolver it would be.
Plan on buying one today or tomorrow. Giving my grandson my Super Single Six for his 21st birthday and replacing it with a 45 ACP 1911.
Nothing for me for the last couple of years, but I do have my eye on a pistol. Got to trade off two or three that I don’t use any longer and maybe a couple of bolt guns I don’t need or want. Just thinning the herd
I didn’t contribute to the numbers in February. Only bought ammo. I found twelve boxes of Winchester Supreme 168 gr Ballistic Silvertip in .308 on Optics Planet. I scooped all of that up. January I was gifted a rifle, so that didn’t count. However, yesterday I bought a new to me rifle and handgun. The rifle was a private sale. So it won’t count for March. The revolver was on the books so I guess it will. I’d rather the S&W didn’t count.

Haven’t bought anything this year except one gasoline powered generator and am building a solar powered standby system to keep necessary items powered up long term.
Ed, don’t know where you live, but generators are a way of life around here. My son is an electrician. His specialty is installing and maintaining Generac generators. I like the idea of solar, but two things have always worried me. First, there’s always a lot of sunshine after a hurricane, but what did hours of 150 mph winds do to the panels? Second, in the good times your local power company has to buy all those electrons you’re feeding into the grid while your meter runs backwards. They don’t like that. They’re in the business of selling power. Not buying it.
My nephew-in-law (?) works for an outfit that designs and installs solar systems in Ohio. Gotta support the boy, since I don’t want to see my niece go homeless, but I’m no fan of solar. Your son has a better gig–maybe I’ll drop a hint at an opportune moment…
As for me, I just completed a propane hookup and panel conversion for a dual fuel generator, so I’m all set.
I just purchased another component to expand my own electric backup system. Dual-fuel gennie plus solar panels provide options for around the clock. And mine’s a stand-alone system. No way do I want to be tied to SoCalEdison’s grid.
BTW, California has announced a major change to the incentives to even get a grid-tied solar system (hmm…that sounds astronomical). From what I was told recently, the credits you currently earn for electricity generated on your roof and sent back into the grid will be reduced by a whopping 75%, effectively removing any financial incentive.
To me, my basic system is primarily about the ability to provide juice in an emergency, such as after a major earthquake (been in one, no fun whatsoever) or a grid failure lasting for days (been in several here).
John says propane is the way to go. If you have natural gas, he said generators drink it like water. I have lived a week or two without any electricity except what an gasoline generater could do. More than once. it ain’t fun. Advice, turn your generator off at night. If it’s mobile. Lock it away. The noise attracts looters. They want the generator. And the gas. And anything else they can kill you for. Ask me how I know.

A place down the road from mine has a flat roof with solar panels held up with angled brackets.
On a day with a strong wind all the panels toppled like dominoes. I was 100m up the road and saw it all happen.
MADD, I get you. The last one I had was Michael. It was a Cat 5. 150+ at the coast a little west of me. 125-130 and gusting at my house. Almost 100 miles away. That’s what concerns me. What would those winds done to a solar panel? They look a lot like a sail. Maybe it’s just me.
I have a solar hot water heater that has been in place for over 20 years, Charley came up I-4 and put me on the dirty side of a Cat 3 and that panel is still there, had to put on a new roof but the panel held.. I run one gas generator uses 12 galons in 24 hours I keep two 50 gal drums, 6 5gal cans and the 28 gal tank on my Navigator full all summer with a couple bottles of stabil… use it up in the fall, winter in the wifes car, refill in June, keeps two big 120v window AC units, fridge, lights, pump for the hot water and tvs going… Cook on the grill, microwave and big toaster oven… Use the 5 gals first and refill as needed, always gas somewhere.. In Virginia I have solar, wind and propane backup but that is a much less demanding system and less prone to high winds and other catastrophic weather events…
Most of my recent ones have been home builds, but there’s a couple others I’ve been thinking about. Mostly, I’ve been taking advantage of deals on ammo and mags, that I see now and then, to supplement the pile.

It’s my lucky day… a gun that I reported stolen over six years ago has been “recovered” and will be returned to me within ten days….and only after a 4473 gets filled out to transfer a pistol that I already own back to myself ! It’ll be interesting to find out where it was recovered from since mysteriously vanishing from the local “Task Force” evidence locker after I refused to fill out the PD Chief’s request for written incident details shortly before it grew legs.

As for the discussion on the solar panels, my set up is a bit overbuilt because of hurricanes. Been through a couple direct hits with Ivan and Sally with no damages. Wind generators come down if we have a storm coming in. And yes I have back up generators. Both a smaller Propane unit that runs the house and a larger diesel unit to power the 220 equipment in the shop as well as cover household needs.
As far as the BGC issue, as my FFL mentioned, it just keeps the honest folks honest. BGC’s do nothing to stop those who have been prohibited from getting whatever arms they want, nor stop DV perps from finding weapons.
As always unless the violent criminals are removed from society no law written will stop someone with criminal intent from finding weapons or committing their intended crimes.
