find one sticking up out of the mud , pour some water on it , work it lose , load and shoot . It should function as well as the day it left the factory and shoot just as straight also , the problem is with the shooting straight part . I have reservations about the accuracy of the old AK , out to 100 yards it’s ok but past that and the bullets fly everywhere . This may work in many situations but I prefer a shooter that can reach out farther . I would actually prefer to be armed with an M2 . I like the select fire option .
I’d go with the M2 as well. Put it on a tripod with a good T&E and rule the valley. Oh, THAT M2, never mind.
You must have some very bad AK experience. I’ve seen even WASRs put in groups under and inch at 100 yards.
AK accuracy is actually better than most people believe. It’s perfectly adequate to engage human-sized targets at 300 yards (it was its design goal, after all). According to the official military manual for AKM, accuracy is deemed to be within acceptable limits if a 4-shot group size at 100 meters fits within a 15 cm circle. This is basically 5 MOA, which translates to about 15 inches at 300 yards – well within the width of a human torso. And note that this is the upper bound; your average service AK would be better than that.
The real problem with accuracy that you see is not so much with the design as it is with the fact that the AKs you see around are either builds based on really old milsurp parts (WASR, Yugo etc); or else new parts manufactured with shitty QC. Same thing with SKS. Basically, if you can find a pristine AK, or a new one manufactured by a reputable company (i.e. not Century or IO, for starters), you might be quite surprised by how accurate it is.
I have shot thousands of rounds of 7.62 NATO through three different AKs over the coarse of about 17 years , two were definitely rebuilds , one definitely not , and I have never had a satisfactory experience with distance shots over 100 yards . I have not seen anyone get the kind of accuracy you report either ( personally ) . I have heard of others reporting your results of coarse but never personally witnessed it . I am a fairly efficient marksman , not 5* by any means , but I was just reporting my personal experiences with the firearms I have handled . I prefer a more accurate rifle . I will give it an A+1 for durability however , just because of what I have heard other people report . Thanks for the input .
US soldiers in Vietnam did use the AK47 type rifle. Special Forces found that it was more covert than using the also very distinctive sounding M16.

Wrong… FNH has the contract for the M249 & the M4. & they’re still a Belgian company. They have a Manufacturing plant in the US where they make that stuff — Just like Beretta.

Back is the Day we got rid of our main battle rifle in favor of the M-16A1, on my tours in the South East Asia War Games this piece of Junk was left behind and an AK Variety was chosen instead along with a 12 Gauge shotgun. who cared about accuracy from 20 feet! M16A1’s jammed with more frequency than the AK! touchy about cleaning

It’s a patriot designed in America thing, no other reason. If a person can erase this for a moment one has to accept the AK design was and still is good. If they were not they would not be the most pervasive firearm in the world. I own an old MAK90, I trust it to always work, and it will.
I still remember during SERE training at the Air Force Academy my 3rd Degree summer, a lesson on small arms. The cadre at the front of the classroom (some senior noncoms) were going over basics of operation of common weapons we might experience. When discussing the Kalashnikov, he extolled its many virtues: simplicity, ease of manufacture, durability, reliability, ubiquity, etc. Some less-than-brilliant dink in the back raised his hand and asked “If the AK is so amazing, why don’t WE use it?”. The sgt shot him a stink-eye glare for a few seconds, and finally answered: “Well we’d really look like a big bag of ass if we used a weapon designed by god hating communists, now wouldn’t we?”
Still makes me smile to think of that.

I don’t know which is more painful, reading that site or reading the misinformation and far-right nuttiness here. The US – in many industries, not just the military – suffers badly from cases of Not Invented Here Syndrome. While AK’s aren’t common in the military except for training purposes the folks that need them (SEALS and Green Berets for example) have plenty of them in storage.
